Title: THE BEATLES 1982 MFSL VINYL/LP COLLECTION
Post by: BeatlesForever on October 23, 2011, 08:02:36 PM
How's it going BEATLES fanatics? I hope that the weekend is going well with everyone. Since I've been a member here on the forum, I have read many threads and posts about THE BEATLES Vinyl/LP releases, the 1987 CD releases as well as the 2009 REMASTERS. However, I have never read anything here about the 1982 MFSL (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab) Vinyl/LP relases. Is anyone familiar with THE BEATLES 1982 MFSL releases? I own two complete BEATLES MFSL collections that are both numbered and considered valuable collector's items. THE BEATLES MFSL collection sounds more crisp with no distortion and bass that will make any stereo system sound great. In my opinion, THE BEATLES MFSL collection sounds far more superior than the 2009 Remasters or any other BEATLES release in the past. You have to hear THE BEATLES MFSL collection to believe it. THE BEATLES MFSL Vinyl/LP collection has been selling on eBay for years and are very expensive. Each Beatles MFSL album sells for as much as $500.00 while the whole BEATLES MFSL collection sells for as much as $5000.00.

It is a shame that Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) has never released THE BEATLES catalog on CD. In my opinion, despite the Vinyl/LP's sounding outstanding, if MFSL would release THE BEATLES catalog on CD, you would hear THE BEATLES the way they were truly intended to be heard. It would be the ultimate sound.

There are numerous BEATLES bootleg MFSL collections on CD, they sound incredible!

Has anyone else ever heard THE BEATLES MFSL releases? I would love to converse with anyone about it. Take care.

Hi BeatlesForever.
I don't actually own any of the MFSL albums and I don't know much about them.
I have just looked them up on Wikipedia ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Fidelity_Sound_Lab (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Fidelity_Sound_Lab)
... and it seems like they were given permission by EMI/Apple to use the original Beatles master tapes to produce their own vinyl copies. I never knew that - I always assumed they were some sort of "bootleg" label.

I have the box set. Unfortunately, I do not own a turntable at the moment. It has been awhile since I have listened to them. I think the 2009 remasters do sound very good. I think they did a nice job. My only complaint, is I think they are a touch too loud. I wish they would release them as Paul McCartney is releasing his back catalog, with both limited and unlimited hi-res versions.

Back to the MFSLs, I think I can safely predict we will never see them again. The closest you can get to them are the Dr. Ebbetts versions. I have those as well. I play the remasters over the Dr Ebbetts, as I am fond of the remasters. Dr. Ebbetts himself commented that he thinks the remasters sound very good as well, and helped him to make the decision not to continue with his needle-drops.

Had we seen Steve Hoffman do the remasters I think they would have sounded better. Steve Hoffman is a remaster engineer of the highest caliber. He is a Beatles fan as well. If you get a chance listen to anything he has done and you will be impressed.

Hi peterbell1! How are you? Thank you for your comment. Yes, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab was given permission and Capitol Records gave MFSL the original master tapes in order for MFSL to make new master tapes using the MFSL process.

In the 2000's, numerous bootleg CD's of THE BEATLES MFSL Vinyl/LP collection have surfaced and are EXCELLENT in sound quality! Here's something that I found on one of the many BEATLES MFSL bootleg CD collections that I own, this collection sounds far better in overall sound quality than THE REMASTERS ever did! Take care.

Hi Gary910! How are you? It feels great conversing with someone that owns the complete MFSL collection like I do. You are right Gary910, MFSL does not have any plans in releasing THE BEATLES catalog in the 24 KT. Gold CD series in the near future. How sad.

I am a HUGE Dr. Ebbetts fan! I own just about everything that DR. Ebbetts ever put out on THE BEATLES. I take it that you own THE BEATLES Dr. Ebbetts/MFSL CD collection that was put out in 2007 or 2008? That collection sounds fantastic! The one that I own was manufactured on genuine original CD's and not CD-R's, is yours also genuine original CD's? THE BEATLES Dr. Ebbetts Blue Box Remasters (UK Stereo) CD collection also sounds great.

Gary910, you need to purchase a turntable and hear THE BEATLES MFSL Vinyl/LP collection again. Its hard to believe that THE BEATLES MFSL collection was released in 1982, the overall sound quality is still considered superior as well as the ultimate sound to this very day. No wonder it's a valuable collector's item.

I love and own THE BEATLES REMASTERS despite what the music critics and/or the fans have said about it on eBay or Amazon. THE REMASTERS has received many negative reviews but there are positive ones too. Take care Gary910.

There's a MFSL box set for sale on eBay in the UK for £650. And there's another for more than £2000!!!
I suppose these sorts of items come up for sale so rarely that it is difficult for collectors to put a price on them.
How much were the sets when they were first released? I presume they were fairly expensive even in 1982.

Do you know if the Purple Chick Deluxe sets which came out for each Beatles album use Dr Ebbets MFSL needledrops or is it the Ebbets versions of the conventional UK albums?

I hadn't heard of the Millennium Remasters collection. I have just had a quick look on the internet and found that there is a UK set and a Japanese red set. Is there any major difference between the two? (I have found a download link for the Japanese red set and wondered if it is worth downloading).

Hi Peterbell1! That really tells me something when THE BEATLES MFSL Vinyl/LP collections are very expensive on eBay! I don't remember how much I paid for both of mine in 1982, I think it was somewhere around $500.00 each.

The last I heard, Purple Chick used just the straight MFSL needledrops and not the Dr. Ebbetts versions.

I would definitely download the Millennium Remasters collection in the Japanese Red set if you can find it.

Here's one link that I found, let me know what you think of it. Take care.

How's it going Hello Goodbye? I hope all is well with you. I must confess, seeing that I own the original BEATLES MFSL/Dr. Ebbetts 2008 mix as well as all of the other MFSL bootlegs on CD, I have never had to download any MFSL collections on my computer. However, I referred these websites, that I posted on this thread, to two friends of mine that live in California. They both told me that the downloads were successful with excellent sound quality. I have always heard good things about the Avaxsearch website. Let me find out more information from both of my friends in California and I'll post the information here on this thread hopefully by tomorrow afternoon. Take care.

In my opinion Dr Ebbetts sound the best. Better than the Purple Chick or the Millennium Remasters.

Hi Hello Goodbye! How are you? I hope all is well with you. I apologize for taking so long to respond. I did find out some information about the Avaxhome/Avaxsearch website. I found out that this website is safe but there is a payload (Costs to download these albums). My friends don't remember how much they paid to download these albums and I'm having a hard time trying to find out the costs. But I'm not giving up, when I find the prices, I will post them on this thread. Take care.

Hi gary910! How are you doing? I agree with you, THE  BEATLES Dr. Ebbetts/MFSL CD collection (2008) is the best overall sound quality EVER! In my opinion, this collection sounds better than THE REMASTERS.

There are so many different versions of the Millennium Remasters, there are some that sound better than others while there are some that sound exactly the same. Do you have THE BEATLES Millennium Remasters (Red Label in front of album) that is the Audiophile Archival Recordings using the 24-Bit Mastering process? This collection was manufactured on genuine original CD's (Not CD-R's) in Russia in 2004 by RMG. In my opinion, this collection sounds fantastic!

I own the Purple Chick collection version but it does not come close to any of the Dr. Ebbetts or Millennium Remasters versions. In my opinion, I wish that Dr. Ebbetts would meet with George Martin, Geoff Emerick, Steve Hoffman and Alan Parsons, than all five of them can meet with Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) and set out to make new master tapes on the complete BEATLES catalog. Doing this, we will hear THE BEATLES the way they were truly intended to be heard. Imagine what THE BEATLES would sound like if this happened. Then again, its only wishful thinking. Take care.

Hi all.
I downloaded a torrent of an MFSL album (PPM) and, to be honest, my old ears couldn't tell much difference from the remasters, but having played in loud guitar bands for years I don't think my hearing is what it used to be!!  ;D

So, I think I'll stick with my Purple Chick Deluxe collections because they give me what I'm after - an insight into the whole process of creating a Beatles album. I'm certainly no audiophile, so I will leave the the MFSLs and Ebbets to those of you that have the ears to truly appreciate them  ;D

It's all very fascinating though, and it's great that we as Beatles fans have the opportunity to listen to our favourite band in all these different guises (even if some of them are not quite as legal as the others!!)

Hi peterbell1! How are you? Thats okay peterbell1, I hear a loud whistling tone in my ears all the time. The way you can tell the difference between The Remasters and the MFSL collections is by raising the volume to higher decibals (dB) without adjusing the bass or treble level buttons. When you raise the volume level to higher decibals, while listening to The Remasters, you have to adjust the bass level as a result of the distortion coming through the speakers. When you listen to an MFSL album, you can raise the volume level to higher decibals without any distortion at all. The bass will also sound perfect! With an MFSL album, the higher the volume, the better it sounds on any stereo. I admit, I do have a discriminating ear but I love to hear the ultimate sound. Take care.

Hi Beatles fanatics! I hope that everyone's weekend went well. There was another BEATLES Bootleg MFSL CD collection that came out from Italy in 1990. This collection is the ONLY collection to date that came out in the 24 KT. Gold series. This complete collection sold for as much as $25,000.00. There has also been fake collections that were sold as actual 24 KT. Gold CD's like the original set through the years but the fake ones are really 24 KT. Gold CD-R's. I own the original set which is considered a valuable collector's item if you can find it. All of the matrix ID numbers are as follows:

Please Please Me - MFSL - 1053
With The Beatles - MFSL - 1052
A Hard Day's Night - MFSL - 1054
Beatles For Sale - MFSL - 1043
Help - MFSL - 1045
Rubber Soul - MFSL - 1044
Revolver - MFSL - 1046
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - MFSL - 1051
Magical Mystery Tour - MFSL - 1049
Yellow Submarine - MFSL - 1050
The White Album - MFSL - 1055/1056
Abbey Road - MFSL - 1048
Let It Be - MFSL - 1047

In reality, despite this complete CD collection being sold in the 24 KT. Gold series, the overall sound quality did not exceed my expectations. The sound quality is not bad, its just that there is a little distortion in the sound quality in this particular MFSL collection that should have been eliminated for the 24 KT. Gold series. The original BEATLES 1982 MFSL Vinyl/LP official releases did not contain any distortion whatsoever. There are at least three (3) BEATLES Bootleg MFSL CD collections that sound far more superior then this 24 KT. Gold CD collection. Take care.

Sorry for the late reply... plan is to send them out on a quality cdr via post office this cost very little.,.. and I hope you would give them an honest review,, I would like for the reviewer (there can be more than one) to pick the 3 albums and also cherry pick 10 or so songs ... I will send them out for the reviewer to report back here....My name is Douglas Carneau phone is 5037506749...this is the real deal as I think these are special.... I have all the 09 remasters as well as the usb apple thing.. I have all the millinium remasters from the needle drops...overall the 09 remasters are better than those needle drops...anyway I would like to share what I have as I am not licenced to sell these for profit....we will see what you think...the 09 are close very close in some cases but they used too much dulling in cases and reverb in other cases,,, I believe these overall are the best I have heard...period..

here is my email.... remember I am doing this for your review..also there are a few songs from the 09 remasters that are real good if they had not used equalization or compression or used reverb in some cases they would have been much better... I believe mine are as good as it gets with none of those things mentioned that they did to the 09...mine have stronger bass in many of the songs like baby it's you and anna...they are clean and kick ass... in a few cases like roll over betoven you can hear that they used eq. to gain mid bass and also dull it for i guess smoother effect........email .................    douglesc1@msn.com             lets do it.... the review...

well so far I have little response and no address to send copies to.... that is too bad as what I have is a MFSL digital copy that is better than any out there ,, I know,,, it tells me what they did to the 09 remasters also there are a few cuts that are better than the 09 and the MFSL copies period...most on the past masters and then sgt pepper is not as good as I would have liked but way better than the 09 or the MFSL , songs like Lucy in the sky and a little help, when I'm 64 IMO is better...baby you're a rich man is way better and so is all you need is love,, day tripper is noticeably better ,,,,,, if you own the vinyl copy,,, my digital copy is the best one could get from those and way better than the Millenium remasters ,, I know I own a set,,,just listened in the car,,,outstanding....I am not a nut job and I am on facebook.....I have even thought of contacting EMI as I would much rather own what I have than their junk in comparison,,,yes you can tell they came from the same source in most cases...there is no digital copy better than what I am talking about..

I bet they were great in their time (1982), but even DR. Ebbetts admitted that he couldn't do better than the 2009 CDs and stop producing his. Not sure how a MFSL CD release could be any better either.

I personally even doubt the MFSL LPs could sound as good as the 2014 mono LPs.  Maybe they are better than 2012 digital release LPs, but as soon as we see AAA stereo releases from Apple, I'm sure nothing will touch those either.

I even doubt the MFSL's sound better than my original UK records, but that could be a possibility, depending on how much remastering they did with the original tapes.
