Contemporary Rock Bands
« on: April 21, 2016, 03:13:21 AM »

Moogmodule suggested that I start a thread on current bands so here goes.

Here is a band that tkitna introduced me to on his Christmas Exchange CD-The Grip Weeds.

Rose Windows, who sadly broke up after 2 albums.  Atmospheric and a bit psychedelic.

Great idea! I know that there's good music being made today; I've just been lazy about trying to find it. I respect your opinion George and I'm glad you're doing this.

I dig the Rose Windows.  I need to grab those 2 records at some point.  I haven't really been searching or buying anything at the moment though.

Here's a few I like that came out last year.  People that received Secret Santa CD's from me already have these I believe.  ha2ha

First one is from Jimmy Haber.  Song called - We Should Start A Revolution.  Youtube doesn't have a video of it, but here's a site you can listen to it along with some other songs of his.

George mentioned the Grip Weeds.  Summer Of A 1000 Years, The Sound Is In You, Giant On The Beach, and How I Won The War are all excellent records.  The others are great too, but those listed are 5 star affairs.  My favorite song is 'Heaven and Earth' off of their latest (HIWTW), but no video for that either.  Here's 'Rainbow Quartz' though.  Great band.

Lastly we have a band called Zombies Of The Stratosphere.  They had an album last year that was really good called In Technicolor.  Its all good, but Mr. Fairfax was the standout to me.  Of course theres no youtube video, but here's a snippet of it.

Todd, their 2 non-album singles are available as downloads on Sub Pop's Website.  Maybe iTunes, not sure.

I took some time to listen to all the songs posted so far and I have to say that I like most of them, quite a lot! The Grip Weeds were my favorites but I like The Sugar Stems and Zombies of the Stratosphere songs too. The only one I didn't care for was the one by Rose Windows. It made me feel kind of nervous by the end. But of course I wouldn't expect a song with the word shroud in the title to make me want to get up and dance. LOL Not surprisingly the ones I like best sound like they bore influences of what I typically listen to. It's not hard to tell who The Grip Weeds like. The only one that didn't have an older type vibe was the one by Every Avenue but I liked it anyway. The video helped. So now I will now longer say that I hate today's music, just the crap that the stations around here play.  ;D

For those with SiriusXM, a good way to listen to some contemporary stuff mixed with great classic music is to listen to Little Steven's Underground Garage, channel 21.  You might hear  everything from The Grip Weeds to The Beatles and Howlin' Wolf there!  Also check out The Spectrum, channel 28.

If you have Spotify, check out The Sounds of Alternative Pop Rock and The Pulse of Candy Pop playlists, among others.

I like this one a lot.

Forgot about Uncle Groovy.  They released a 2013 record with Suzie Chunk called "One Vowel Away From The Truth" that I liked a bunch.

Oh, you're welcome Todd. It's funny how that works; sometimes things turn up for one person but not another. The Web is weird.  :)
