Title: Gimme Some Truth boxset - did they cut the right songs?
Post by: Barry on August 14, 2011, 03:18:25 PM
Hi Beatles fans.

I've steered clear of buying John Lennon's solo work on the basis of why would you want to listen to music your dad listens to?

But, knowing that this can sometimes be a mistake (as I have found in a few other cases), I recently bought the Gimme Some Truth boxset. If you're not familiar with it, it compiles most of John's solo work. It misses out most of the live recordings, demos and late 60s experimental recordings, as well as anything written solely by Yoko.

Apart from that, the following songs are not included:

It's So Hard
Do the Oz
Attica State
The Luck of the Irish
John Sinclair
Angela
Aisumasen (I'm Sorry)
One Day (At a Time)
Bring on the Lucie (Freda Peeple)
Nutopian International Anthem
I Know I Know
Going Down on Love
Help Me to Help Myself
(Forgive Me) My Little Flower Princess

Possibly there might be other obscure recordings not included - that's just based on a skim through Wikipedia.

So, my question is: do you think I am missing much if I don't buy any further Lennon CDs?

Cheers,
Barry.

Hi Barry, welcome aboard.

My opinion: no, you're not missing anything relevant.

I fully agree; it very much depends of what kind of fan you are. If you are a real fan of John's music then normally you want to have the complete collection of CD's at least.

I'm also a "visuel-audio-video"-fan, so I collect all DVD's, CD's, books and magazines  :D

The Signature Box is all you really need. You don't really need this.

Thanks for your responses.

I should probably clarify, though, that I'm not really looking for advice about whether to buy Gimme Some Truth. I've already bought it, so its too late for that.

I'm not really bothered about the fact that there are some Lennon songs that I'm missing, unless they are particularly good songs.

Question is, how highly do you rate the songs I listed in the OP? Or, would you argue that I'm missing something if I listen to tracks from Double Fantasy without the Yoko songs? Or maybe you're of the view that I should think about getting one of the live albums?

I hope you're not hurt by this, but you're missing a lot of great songs in that list. (Forgive Me) My Little Flower Princess is a great song. So is Do The Oz, and a number of others.

John Sinclair is a track that's essential to me, I'm shocked they didn't include it.

In my opinion, "Bring on the Lucie" is one of Lennon's best songs, and I am surprised that it has been consistently passed over on his compilation albums, especially the lengthy box sets.
