Pulled from the hat

Me - Klang
Bobber - Joost
Ibanez_ax - Hello Goodbye

Those are the matchups of who will exchange CD's, but as usual, I offer to send one to whoever wants one and i'll gladly accept any CD's from any of you as I'm a music whore and love new things.

Anyways, please PM me your addresses and i'll make sure it happens.  If your not comfortable with that, you can contact the person you were chosen with.

Thanks guys.

Ah! Een Nederlands onderonsje!

Todd, I would like to send a cd to all participants. I'll send my address by PM.

Here's an idea... Only six people are participating. Todd and Cor are willing to send CDs to everyone, and so am I. If the other three feel the same way, we can all just send a CD to everyone. So you send five and receive five.

I know that sending five CDs over the world isn't cheap, so I really don't want to pressure anyone into doing this. But if everyone would just happen to feel the same way...

I'm up for sending a CD to everyone.  I don't mind shipping outside the U.S.

Yeah, i'll send a CD to everybody too.  Its totally up to the participant though as we all know.

I'm waiting for a few more CD's to arrive in the mail, before I can burn mine, but they should be here any day now.

Neo-pagan expressionist dadaism.

But of course, that could change in a heartbeat.

I have a couple finished.  Burned some extra copies and tested one in the truck tonight.  Besides the track listing being backwards, everything worked fine.   ha2ha  If my truck plays them, they should play anywhere.  Sorry if any of the songs are repeats from previous CD's some of you might have gotten, but I cant remember.

Since Klang is new to this, I will be sending him a couple CD's of my favorites.  Everybody else should already have those from the last time.

I got George's CD today too.

Here's my dilemma, like I stated before, I played my first CD that I burnt in my truck.  It played, but the track order was all over the place.  Ok, my truck is particular with some CD's sometimes, so I decided to try another one out in a different player.  Wouldn't read it.  Its an old player downstairs that I hardly ever listen to.  Ok, try another one.  Wont read it.  Now i'm really confused.  Grab my daughters labtop.  Played it fine.

I figured out that the CD's are being burnt in MP3 fashion (tons of room left on the CD) and the players I tried them out on are to old to pick them up that way.  My truck is brand new so it makes sense.  I don't know how to fix this yet, but if I cant, my suggestion would be to play them on a computer first and then either reburn them or do what ever you feel needs done.

I don't think there is a "fix".  MP3 CDs simply won't play on older players.  My car won't play them but like you said I can rip them to my computer and then burn the tracks as a regular audio CD.

Todd, did you create an MP3 CD because there is more than 80 minutes of music?
Title: Re: SIGN UPS FOR SECRET SANTA CD"S HERE

Here's the story.  I bought a cheap HP laptop for my music and to watch Netflix on.  First thing I did was import all my CD music to iTunes because my wife bought my an ipod a few years ago that will hold tons of music and I haven't done anything with it yet.  So I imported all that music.  I opened Windows Media Player and the music I imported on iTunes was there already.  Not sure how that happened, but it automatically came over to Media Player.  I thought sweet and started to make playlists.  Well, the Windows Media music must be in MP3 format as I said the CD's have tons of room on them and they wont play on my older CD players.  I don't know how or if I can make just a normal audio CD from the music that's already on there.

Post by: Bobber on December 18, 2014, 08:05:40 AM
Todd, I don't know what software you use to burn a cd. Make sure you use the option (or something similar to) 'Burn a AUDIO cd'. That will probably do the trick.

The player in my car can play MP3-cd's as well, which is neat because I can make cd's with 200 or more songs on it.

That option or box never appeared anywhere.  I just drug the songs over and right above the track list is the option to burn the CD.  I'll mess with it some more this weekend.

Todd, if you use Windows Media Player, this video should help you choose which type of CD to burn.   Personally, I would use iTunes.

Listened to the first half of George's cd in the car this morning. Nice and refreshing. Lots of new names to me. A touch of 60's-90's revival and country here and there. At least, that's what I hear! Thanks a lot George!

I started out with Klang's CD's last night.  First off, loved the Christmas Card.  Sure, I have no idea what it says on the front ( ha2ha), but its cool and my wife and kids loved it too.

Music wise, I thought it was awesome how a lot of the songs stay in the Christmas theme.  I dig the fast paced surfer type music of the Boardwalkers, Neptunas, and even the Los Straitjackets.  Love that kind of stuff.  I only browsed through the collection one time so far, but have to comment on the song from Salt.  Love it.  Reminded me of a Mamas and Papas kind of thing with the female voices. I was also surprised at how much I liked the song from Anoushka Shankar as i'm not usually one for the indian music.

All in all, an outstanding effort.  Cant wait to listen to it some more and become more familiar with the songs.

I love these CD swaps and i'm going to try to hit up another one tonight.

All in all, an outstanding effort.  Cant wait to listen to it some more and become more familiar with the songs.

I'm glad you enjoyed some of that. I admit it's an eclectic mix. That kind of diversity appeases the various personalities trapped inside my fevered brain-case. I'd like to think there's a little something there for everyone.

I still haven't gotten yours yet. I hope the almighty Bundespost hasn't dropped the ball on this. Phalanges crossed.

I finally got a good listen in with the others. Very nice. I can honestly say that every tracked was enjoyable and I got exposed to some exciting new stuff.

George: Lots of new stuff for me. I was not acquainted with Temples, Fleet Foxes, and Tame Impala. Always enjoy Roseanne Cash. Some highlights - Rose Tattoo, Sun Structures, and Battery Kinzie. Good stuff. The whole thing is a fun listen. I'd kind of forgotten how good Dropkick Murphys can be. I'll have to add more of that to my collection.

Cor: Very mellow (mostly) and sophisticated (always) mix. Let's face it, successfully putting Debussy and Sparks together on one CD calls for a bow. Sparks is a family favorite here at The Old Melody Ranch. I have to admit, I'd never given a good listen to Royals before now. I like it. Still Loving After You was a nice new one for me.

Joost: Some great old faves. Also some nice new discoveries. Especially the Netherlands selections. Especially enjoyed Russian Spy And I, Temporarily Expendable, and I Apologise (Dear Simon). Very nice Beach Boys selections. The Stranglers selection (Golden Brown) was new to me. I'll have to bone up on them.

I see that everyone opted for the higher quality AIFF format. I went with MP3s to get more tracks in. I hope the fidelity didn't suffer too much. If I do this again I'll go the other way. Maybe do a double CD like Joost did if I feel the need.

Thanks to everyone who shared.

Again, if anyone would like to download my set then hit me up.

Kaili.

I'm glad you like it, Jim.

Dropkick Murphys can still rock out some hard punk stuff, so I wanted to include a couple of their more melodic tunes.  The same goes for Flogging Molly.

As far as formats go, it really depends on the mastering.  A well mastered recording will sound fine as an MP3 file.  A badly mastered recording will sound bad in any format, including lossless.

Todd, I listened to all of your first disc and most of your second.  Great sixties vibe as usual.  There is no such thing as too many Buckinghams songs.

I got that CD two weeks ago. I love it! It has a very authentic 1967 sound, but with all the benefits of modern recording studios, plus these guys really know how to write a good song.

I'm listening to "A Klangy Kristmas" right now and it is a fun romp to be sure.  Great job Jim!

Absolutely. The Common Linnets was the Dutch contender on the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 and consisted mainly of Ilse DeLange and Waylon, both great singers in their own respect. They ended up runner up in the contest, but pretty soon their co-operation proved to be pretty, erm, complex. Still, an album was recorded and I think it's pretty good actually.

This is Still Loving After You. Not the song from the ESC, which was Calm After The Storm.

I ripped and burned a copy of Georges CD and went to burn Cor's only to have Windows media shutdown everytime.  I found that I had the Rip on automatic and that seemed to be causing it.  Now it wont play Cor's or Zoosts CD's for some reason.  I get errors when I try to play them.  I have t be the worlds dumbest person.  The adventure continues.

Was listening to Cors CD tonight on the way to work and I love it.  A batch of different styles for sure.  I didn't have the track list with me, but I really liked the 10 minute classical song.  Gorgeous.  I liked the Royals song a lot too.  Of course the Babys are a favorite of mine (still think there version of 'Money' is the best).  Great stuff.  Will listen to this one often.

Joost, thanks for the Christmas card.  Really dug it.

The classical piece is from Debussy. My late grandfather had an album with this piece on it and it came to me after he died. I managed to find a download with Debussy's complete works and this is one piece that has of course a special meaning to me.

I had to drive to Amsterdam to and fro yesterday. It gave me the chance to listen to Todd's cd's. Very sixties sound overall! Great tunes. Nice to find Jellyfish between them. I always get back to That Is Why as well.

Listened to George's CD on the way to work tonight.  Love it.  There's a couple of songs on the CD that are just plain badass and will quickly become favorites of mine.  Of course I didn't have the tracklist, but I believe it was song 7 and 11.  Song 7 reminds me of a Pretty Things song with the distorted guitar playing behind the singing.  Singer has a great voice too.  Very McCartney like.  I absolutely, absolutely love that song.  Number 11 has some cool drums that remind me of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' without the toms.  Great guitar also.  'Rose Tattoo' (I think) sounds like a blast of a song when your p*ss drunk.  I dig it.  The first tune is awesome also.  'Mesmorize' I believe?  Anyways, the CD in whole would be categorized as a roadtrip collection to me.  Very pleasing while taking a trip.  I'll use it as such on my motorcycle for sure this summer.  Great stuff.  Thanks George.

Joosts CD will be getting the next run through.

Was listening to Joosts CD on the way in tonight.  I need to look up the name to a couple of songs when I get home since I don't have the track list with me, but they are simply fantastic.  I had to repeat them once.  Another very diverse, refreshing CD.  I usually put away all the secret santa cd's and kind of forget about them, but this time, they went to iTunes so they will be getting repeated listens to the songs I really like.  Thanks Joost.

Now to just get Klangs his CD's.  I hate when something like this is created and the postal service screws it up.  It wont be tolerated.  We will try until it gets done.   ha2ha

I'm glad you like it Todd.  Track 7 is Desire Be Desire Go by Tame Impala.  You might want to check out both their albums as they have a nice pysch vibe.  Tracks 1 and 11 are from Temples great debut album Sun Structures.

Yes, I was surprised when I looked at the track listing.  I've listened to some Tama Impala sparsely and liked what I heard, but I surely didn't remember that one.  Thanks again George.

Jims cd is full of surprises. Since Thomas Dolby sang I Scare Myself I absolutely love the song, but Dan Hicks' version is spot on. And to my own surprise I liked the song by Sean Lennon, although his voice is something thin and sharp. I don't know if I could handle a complete album of Sean.

Thanks for the kind words about the CD.

I suppose you know that Dan wrote 'I Scare Myself' and that is the original version. Interesting note, the violinist on there is pre-It's A Beautiful Day David LaFlamme.

I like Sean's latest LP ('Midnight Sun') very much. Each and every track. It's of a certain style, so you'd have to be in the mood for it. But if you're in that mood it certainly hits the spot.

Anyway, busy tonight, but I'll get to listening tomorrow.

Finally eked out the time for some quality listening and...wow! What a great bunch of tunes. 4 CDs worth.

Honestly, every single track enjoyable - many are current faves now.

Some standouts for me...

Disk 1: 'Cowboys & Indians' 'Mongrel Heart' 'I Know Where the Sunshines'

Disk 2: 'The King Is Half Undressed' 'Bootleg Flyer' 'Strange Walking Man'

Fav 1: 'Fly At Night' 'Frozen Love' 'Diamonds In The Dark'

Fav 2: 'Cruel Girl' 'Last Cloud Home' 'Walking Through My Dreams'

But really, they're all great tracks.

Nice to see The B-52s represented. They're a particular fave of mine. Had the good fortune of seeing them live in their early heyday (opening for Talking Heads, no less).

Thanks for including all the disks. I'll be enjoying them for a long time.
