Be sure to take a look at what he has in advance..............and then get him one of the DVDs he doesn't have like Yellow Submarine or A Hard Day's Night..........if you're willing to go really pricey, get him The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 if he doesn't have it, which sells for about sixty bucks......

Well, old LPs are really good. I always liked those framed  fake gold record thingies.

check his album collection and make sure he has all of them here: http://www.fan-sites.org/the-beatles/index2.php?x=music/discography.php

If he does try his movie collection. And if all else fails there is a LOT of merchandise, books, t-shirts, posters, ect.

Good luck and happy birthday to him!!!

Like previous posters have already said, check his LP and DVD collections and get him what he doesn't have.

You said you didn't want to go cheap, so if money is no object:

tickets to an upcoming McCartney concert

a trip to Liverpool and London on the Beatles pilgrimage  http://www.beatletour.com/index2.html

One of the collector publications from Genesis
http://www.genesis-publications.com/books/index.html

If he likes books about the Beatles:
Tony Bramwell's new book, Magical Mystery Tours
Alan Clayson's 4-title series, each one devoted to a Fab
Mark Lewisohn's books
All available on amazon.com
