What Do These Words Mean?
« on: May 16, 2011, 12:52:31 AM »

Since the books and websites say something about the USA promo copies of Penny Lane contain an extra trumpet solo at the end, I have a list of words.

Promo
Promotional
Demo
Promote

Can anybody tell me what these words mean? And one more thing, what does a demo record look like?

Promo or promotional record is a copy of a record sent to radio or reviewers before it is released to the public. They sometimes feature a different mix of the song, sometimes not.

A demo is a take of song before it is recorded properly in a studio (such as John's acoustic versions of Strawberry Fields on Anthology 2 and numerous bootlegs). Some beatle demos were pressed on to heavy records called acetates that wear out fairly quickly for publishing purposes or to give to other artists who planned on covering the song.

Hope this helps.

And what about a demo record?

Well, as the Doc said: it's just a recording of a song before it's been done "properly" in the studio.

But just to expand on that, there's two main uses for them. Firstly, a demo is a sort of rough draft or early sketch, but in audio/musical format. It's meant to be a basic outline of how a songwriter "sees" a particular song, and it's presented to himself and other people for further creative input. Secondly, musicians often use demos to present themselves to professional studios/producers, to give those people an idea of what it is they'd be working with. In this sense, it's kind of like an audition or a screen test.
