'White Album' In Contention
« on: May 17, 2008, 03:47:07 AM »

Best of '68? Well...normally I'd say these random polls don't mean very much in the greater scheme of things, but there is something worth getting involved in it this time, imo. Check it...

http://jp.dk/kultur/article1322334.ece

I visit a number of Kinks forums where word has gotten out about this and those forumites are definitely tilting the scale towards 'The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society', which is a great album indeed, but I believe that TWA is far superior. Perhaps some of you would agree and like to participate in this poll. There are other great candidates listed, too, and as much as I appreciate 'VGPS' I just don't see it stacking up with certain others.

Just saying.

Done!  :)

I love polls. One night I was called by a polling company wanting to know what I thought of phone surveys generally and had I ever lied on one. Of course I lied again and told them I was usually honest.  ;D

Current standings...

The Beatles - The Beatles: 27%
The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet: 7%
Bookends - Simon & Garfunkel: 0%
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland: 10%
The Kinks - The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society: 32%
The Band - Music From Big Pink: 3%
Pink Floyd - A Saucerful Of Secrets: 5%
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison: 6%
The Doors - Waiting For The Sun: 10%
Mothers Of Invention - We're Only In It For The Money: 0%

Some interesting figures there, and, come to think of it, interesting choice of nominees. Where are...

Cream- 'Wheels Of Fire'
Big Brother and the Holding Company - 'Cheap Thrills'
Creedence Clearwater Revival - 'Creedence Clearwater Revival'
Iron Butterfly - 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"
Quicksilver Messenger Service - 'Quicksilver Messenger Service'
Steppenwolf  - 'Steppenwolf'
Traffic - 'Traffic'
Jeff Beck - 'Truth'
The Velvet Underground - 'White Light/White Heat'
The Byrds - 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo'
The Zombies - 'Odyssey And Oracle'
Fleetwood Mac - 'Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac'
Deep Purple - 'Book Of Talysien'

...and dozens more?

And...I'm a big Zappa fan but I don't even remotely understand 'WOIIFTM' being on there. Oh well.

 ;)

The Kinks Kontingent is really after this. Again, I truly appreciate the quality of 'VGPS' but I do not see it as the best of '68. It is just one little poll, so maybe we should just Let It Be. Still...

Village Green Preservation Society, along with Face To Face and Something Else, is a great album that's hardly known over here. Too bad, really.

Love The Kinks....that's like the only album listed in this thread that I haven't head for some reason. Probably one of like 5 of those albums that perennially end up on Best Of lists, etc...so strange that I still haven't gotten around to hearing it.

Hmmm. Wonder if this qualifies, it'd probably be the best of '68, no question.

Cohen is awesome and is in need of more attention by the general public, as are The Kinks. By all means, seek out 'VGPS', too, and enjoy. Many feel that it is their finest work. I am partial to 'Muswell Hillbillies' myself, with 'VGPS' running a close second. This was such a brilliant and creative period for popular music, eh?

My favorite Cohen is I'm Your Man from 1988. "Everybody Knows" and "Tower Of Song," especially.  :)

Done. The White Album is my favorite Beatles album anyways!  And nothing against the Kinks but....seriously...I'd have even chosen Simon and Garfunkel or The Stones over them.  Then again, I wasn't even around in 68 so what the hell do I know?

Klang, I like your list of omissions from this list. Lots of super contenders this year.

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
9%

The Kinks - The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society
42%

The Band - Music From Big Pink
3%

Pink Floyd - A Saucerful Of Secrets
4%

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
5%

The Doors - Waiting For The Sun
8%

Mothers Of Invention - We're Only In It For The Money

Another omission is :

Tyrannosaurus Rex - My People Were Fair  And Had Sky In Their Hair ...But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their  Brows .

This 1968 debut album from a twenty year old Marc Bolan reached # 15 on the UK album chart and went to # 1 on it's reissue in 1972 when T.rex and Bolan hit the big time.
Tyrannosaurus Rex were one of the best underground acts on the London scene  , their four albums and singles are amongst  the most interesting of the late 60's .

No kidding. Bolan et al were awesome. A crazy omission indeed. Well, we need to recognize that this is a relatively small and isolated poll that clearly wasn't thought out very well, as is often the case with these things. Hardcore Kinks fans are networking and pushing hard to cinch this, so it hardly counts as any sort of real indication of popular tastes. If such a hollow victory is so important for them then all we can do is smile and move on. It is funny as Hell.

I'm all for them winning; the Kinks deserve more recognition, not that a victory here will get them very much. But if a member of your local Kinks Kontingent gets a little too noisy and obnoxious while doing his victory dance, just throw a copy of this at him:
