This Boy - Stereo Mix
« on: February 11, 2012, 04:33:46 PM »

Do you know what I think? I think the stereo mix of This Boy was made on November 10, 1966 in the United Kingdom. But it wasn't released there until the Past Master CD came out in 1988. But for some reason, when the stereo mix was released for the first time, the vocals are in the right channel instead of the center channel.

the vocals are in the right channel instead of the center channel.

Well, you can hear the same in a lot of other Beatles (and other 1960's artists) songs. For example, "We Can Work It Out" and "Day Tripper".

It seems that the stereo version of "This Boy" was made for the 1966 compilation A Collection Of Beatles Oldies, as a mistake instead of "Bad Boy", which was the song that finally was included in the album.

Negative. Capitol Record <crappy> released a two-album "The Beatles Story", sort of a phono-documentary of the band. There was a tiny snippet of "This Boy" in stereo on this release, in 1964. Now for the big mystery: Why was it obviously mixed in stereo in 1964, but not available as a complete song on vinyl until later? There is also part of the "Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl" mixed in.

Btw, I believe that this album is the only one Capital Records still releases in vinyl, at least this was true as recently as 2011. Although Capitol has re-released some of the Beatles U.S. albums on CD (mono and stereo), I do not know if they have plans to release "The Beatles Story" on CD.
