I was so sad to hear this. Some of my friends on Facebook were discussing this and how another part of their youth was gone. They were referring, of course, to Starship. It made me think of the teacher we had for 7th grade health. The first day, when he was doing attendance, he stopped after reading out my classmate Russ Kanter's name and said, "Oh...Kanter. Like Paul Kanter." Everyone just looked at him. Then he said, "From Jefferson Airplane." Still nothing but that was when I realized that I was a little different from the rest of them because I knew.

A fairly personal loss for me, being from the greater Bay Area as I am. Airplane/Starship were homegrown heroes. For a time Paul and Grace were the monarchs of local Hippiedom. Apart from the mark he left as a cultural icon, the music was often great. All of it supremely relevant in its time. Another page has turned.

I'm just knowing the sad news. Paul Kantner was a key member of Jefferson Airplane, one of my very favorite bands.

Some songs he wrote:

"Martha" (1967)
! No longer available

"Crown Of Creation" (1968)
! No longer available

"We Can Be Together" (1969)
! No longer available

Now it comes out that early Airplane singer Signe Anderson passed on the same day as Paul. Dang.

Some will come and some will go,
We shall surely pass.
When the wind that left us here,
Returns for us at last.
We are but a moment's sunlight,
Fading on the grass.

It's really been difficult seeing so many leave us recently. I admired Signe not only for her fantastic voice but also as a person. She based her decision to leave Jefferson Airplane on what was best for her newborn child and fought through a lot of health problems in her 74 years. I hope the news of her passing leads people to discover that first Airplane album the way I did when I first joined the forum. She deserves recognition.

RIP, Signe.

That's a lovely picture of Signe and her daughters. Thanks for finding it Barry.
