Title: All Those Years Ago lyrics and video
Post by: Normandie on June 21, 2021, 06:43:52 PM

While poking around online this morning while I was supposed to be working, I noticed that George's estate added the "All Those Years Ago" to his official YouTube channel on June 1 of this year to commemmorate the May 1981 release of Somewhere in England.

I see from my online explorations that there is a good bit of hate toward this song, and—not being a musician—I don't really grasp why. I find both the lyrics and the video very poignant. It makes me choke up a bit.

Here's a link if anyone wants to access it quickly to rewatch. Grab your tissues.  ;)

I remember when I first heard All Those Years Ago on the radio in May 1981.  I was driving to Mount Sinai Medical Center where I was doing my residency.  It was just five months after John was taken from us.  When I pulled into the parking lot, I sat in my car for a few minutes reflecting on what I had just heard.  I felt then, as I feel today, that George had paid tribute to John in a most respectful way.

I think it's slightly bland musically, but it has a good feeling.

I only noticed today that Lennon sings "You must have learned something in ALL THOSE YEARS" in How Do You Sleep?

George played on that song too!

It’s never been my favourite George song but it does invoke an unusual feeling when I hear the intro. At the time they made a lot out of Paul, with  Linda and Dennie being on it (in addition to Ringo drumming) making it the first time these three ex Beatles had played on a record since the break up. But their presence is pretty light touch and doesn’t seem to add much.

I’m not sure why people would hate it. It’s a pretty inoffensive tune. And credit to George for doing an upbeat tribute rather than something maudlin.

One thing that’s never surfaced is the original lyrics. The song was originally given to Ringo but he knocked it back. The lyrics were reworked after John’s death.

Like Elton John's "Empty Garden." So dreary, in my opinion. But then, I've never been a fan of any of his songs.

And the Magical Mystery Tour ended on the final few notes of the song.
