John vs. Paul
« on: December 27, 2004, 02:55:51 AM »

I'm sure this has probably been done before...

I'm trying to find all of their solo songs that have references to one another, negative or positive... I want to see if we can make a complete list of them... it might be hard...

Here are only a few I can think of:

How Do You Sleep (John, Imagine 1971) - Negative towards Paul
Here Today (Paul, Tug of War 1982) - Positive towards John

Do you get what I mean? It could be anything... Also, if it's only certain lyrics of a song, post the lyrics in italics (like this:)

How Do You Sleep (John, Imagine 1971) - Negative towards Paul
- "Those freaks were right when they said you were dead"

Get it?

Let's see how many we can come up with!

I read somewhere that Let Me Roll It and Dear Friend were something to do with John and of course Too Many People. Which was negative!

lyrics:

Too many people going underground,
Too many reaching for a piece of cake.
Too many people pulled and pushed around,
Too many waiting for that lucky break.

That was your first mistake,
You took your lucky break and broke it in two.
Now what can be done for you?
You broke it in two.

Too many people sharing party lines,
Too many people ever sleeping late.
Too many people paying parking fines,
Too many hundred people losing weight.

That was your first mistake,
You took your lucky break and broke it in two.
Now what can be done for you?
You broke it in two.

Mm-mm-uh-uh.

Uh!

Too many people preaching practices,
Don't let 'em tell you what you wanna be.
Too many people holding back,
This is crazy, and baby, it's not like me.

That was your last mistake,
I find my love awake and waiting to be.
Now what can be done for you?
She's waiting for me

I think the whole song of How Do You Sleep was to Paul, not just a lyric.  My favorite (though I love Paul the best) is "The only thing you've done was Yesterday."

Its said that '3 Legs' from RAM was a cap towards John.

Well when I walk, when I walk
On my horse upon the hill (when I walk the horse upon a hill)
Well when I walk, walk walk walk
On my horse upon the hill (when I walk the horse upon a hill)
And I lay me down
Will my lover love me still
A dog is here, (a dog is here), a dog is there (a dog is there)
My dog he got three leg
But he can

"Here Today" was dedicated to John.

And If I Say I Really Knew You Well
What Would Your Answer Be.
If You Were Here Today.

Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- Here To - Day.

Well Knowing You,
You'd Probably Laugh And Say That We Were Worlds Apart.
If You Were Here Today.
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- Here To - Day.

But As For Me,
I Still Remember How It Was Before.
And I Am Holding Back The Tears No More.
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- I Love You, Ooh-

What About The Time We Met,
Well I Suppose That You Could Say That We Were Playing Hard To Get.
Didn't Understand A Thing.
But We Could Always Sing.

What About The Night We Cried,
Because There Wasn't Any Reason Left To Keep It All Inside.
Never Understood A Word.
But You Were Always There With A Smile.

And If I Say I Really Loved You
And Was Glad You Came Along.

If You Were Here Today.
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- For You Were In My Song.
Ooh- Ooh- Ooh- Here To - Day

"Let Me Roll It" was a subtle message to Lennon. By that time the two almost became bitter enemies. It's so bizarre to hear now. "How Do You Sleep" was a complete McCartney bash... Paul even talked about it in an interveiw at the time... he responded to Lennon's line "The only thing you done was yesterday" He said "I know that's not true, and John knows that's not true".  "Let Me Roll It" was supposed to be a peace offering, but Lennon apparently completely ignored it. Nasty stuff. Sounds a little juvenille now. But "Let Me Roll It" is a great Paul song.

No - DEAR BOY is adressing Linda's first husband ... "I guess you never knew how much you missed!" Bit of a nasty kind of song, if you ask me.

I DON'T WANNA FACE IT never struck me as having anything to do with Paul McCartney.
