Title: Poll: Which Is Your Favorite Version Of Crying, Waiting, Hoping?
Post by: Hello Goodbye on November 15, 2014, 11:24:20 PM
We're fortunate to have Buddy Holly's apartment tapes so we can hear how he envisioned Crying, Waiting, Hoping...

After his death several versions were produced.  I think this one is the closest to how Buddy Holly would have liked it to sound...

Which is your favorite Beatles version of Crying, Waiting, Hoping?

The Decca Audition version...

I think overall I prefer the BBC version. It's more laid back. The drumming is more subtle and less obtrusive. In the Decca audition it feels like the drumming is trying to force the pace too much.

They're nice versions. George actually did a good buddy holly. It's interesting how his voice on both these sounds more confident and less forced than say on please please me.

Not only did George do a good Buddy Holly but he also nailed studio guitarist Donald Arnone's instrumental bridge note for note!

In the Decca Audition version I think Pete Best was trying hard to replicate Jerry Allison's drumming style...

It's a close call for me, I really like both versions of a charming little song.

The BBC one is more relaxed, polished and self assured.

But I have to admit the Decca Audition just edges it for me: I love the echo, the immediate, nervous energy, the more ear-catching (for me) guitar solo. Dare I say it, Pete's drumming has a shuffling urgency which helps fuel the momentum whereas Ringo sounds much more subdued and pedestrian to me, plodding and almost timid.

I'm no musician so I'll be interested to learn which version is technically better, but the Decca version is just that bit meatier I think.

I, too, voted for the Decca version primarily because of Pete Best's drumming.  He might not have been as accomplished as Jerry Allison but he certainly added a Crickets feel to the song on 1 January 1962.

Record producer Jack Hansen hired studio musicians and The Ray Charles Singers to augment Buddy Holly's vocal and guitar on his 14 December 1958 apartment recording of Crying, Waiting, Hoping.  The idea was to give the song a Buddy Holly and The Crickets sound.  Released on 20 July 1959, it sounded like this...

That's what The Beatles heard when they decided to add the song to their repertoire.  Pete Best did his part to bring the song even closer to The Crickets' sound.

I like Marshall Crenshaw's version for the movie La Bamba a lot too...

Some full-blown Jerry Allison style drumming there...paradiddles and all!!

I like them all but I prefer the BBC version.
