I can take or leave this one. I tend to favor the early Beatles songs, and I do adore the harmonies, but, like Snoopy66, the myriad "Yeah"s gets a little annoying to me.

A great rocker. I didn't hear this til my teens as for some reason With the Beatles was the only LP my older brothers didnt have. I recall thinking at first it was written a bit to a formula. It seemed that the "yeah yeahs" were a bit of a signature they had to have at that stage. But as usual they throw so much good stuff in that it turns it into a great tune.

Well, that sums it up, really.  One had to be around at the time to fully realize just how ubiquitous the "yeah, yeah, yeahs" really were.  I agree with you, Moog, that they were a bit of a signature for the group as were the "ooohs" and shaking of their hair.  It certainly got them noticed and no doubt was carefully planned.  And was certainly more benign than a toilet seat hung around the neck.

In 1964 we had Yeah Yeah Candy...

The Beatles even influenced comic books in 1964...

The yeah, yeah, yeahs had an interesting effect on girls in 1964...

It was a wonder to behold!

And Twist And Shout.  Those were the songs I liked when I first heard The Beatles in 1964.

I actually liked The Animals more in 1964 and 1965.  I liked the raw stuff Eric Burdon sang.

I can tell you that even now, at my age, that hair shaking makes me feel like screaming. I keep it down to just a big smile so I don't alarm anyone but inside I'm screaming!

That's one awesome superman edition. Where did you find that??

It's funny to think back how much popular culture was influenced. I recall as a kid a Gilligan's Island episode where the island was visited by a mop topped besuited pop band. (How did they take so long to get off an island everyone seemed to be able to get to??)

I even recall a rather cringeworthy F Troop episode where the good looking love interest of the dopey officer did a folk rock version of Lemon Tree in front of a rock band. Odd for a show set in the 19 the century.

Yep. He had such a great voice for those type of tunes.

And not just rockers. He gave ballads such a great dimension.

One of the main things I took from the first BBC recordings was confirmation what a great pop/rock singer he was.

One of the things that first hooked me onto John as a singer was on Please Please Me (the song) when he says 'Come'on' 3 times and the others repeat it, the way John sings 'Come'on' is just awesome, I always really dug it, so goddam cool, so Rock & Roll, I still feel the same whenever I hear that.....

I feel the exact same. That's one of my favorite parts of a favorite song. The "Come on" part is just so....awesome.

It's a great example. I think pretty much the entirety of the Please Please Me LP is a great testament to Johns singing. From Ask Me Why's croony style to the Twist and Shout throat shreading. That apparently even impressed the white coated engineers.
