Bob Marley
« on: March 09, 2005, 05:33:01 AM »

Just wondering what eveyone thinks of him. I love him. He was so freaking talented. His lyrics are amazing. It's sad that he died so young though. I've been singing Redemtion song all day. That and Cry Baby Cry. I've been alternating from Bob to the Beatles!

I'm not into that raggae stuff. It all sounds the same to me. My friend just recently burnt just about all the Bob Marley that ever existed and I had to ask him why. He didnt know because he doesnt listen to him either, but he said it just seemed like the right thing to do. Whatever!

Q magazine called him " a kind of black John Lennon" which sums him up quiet nicely.
It's the only reggae I can listen to.

Bob Marley overrated?  What kind of crazy talk is that?  Listen to "Exodus"--or even the early stuff.  He was no black John Lennon, he was black Bob Marley (actually mixed race with an irish father).  I'd say that "No Woman No Cry" is a better song on the same subject as "In My Life" (which won some kind of stupid poll of best song of all time).

"My feet is my only carriage . . ."

Bob had trenchtown street cred that puts JL's middle-class teddy-boy Menlove Ave. background to shame.

i dont care about his street cred.  i just find that hes kind of overrated as a sort of representative of stoner music, when i find some* of his music rather bland.  he does have many great songs tho.

Maybe. You can't get into No Woman No Cry or Get Up Stand Up, Stir it Up, or Redemption Song? How 'bout the original I Shot the Sheriff??? Oh well, we all have different tastes.

No i like all those songs.  Its just Marley seems to be on a pedestal with an image, and i dont think his music backs that image up

Well, it's sort of like Lennon and his pedestal. When you die young, that tends to happen. But Marley wrote some great songs and created some great music. So I think it's okay to put him up there. He's a one of a kind thing.

Man, just because the ganja is part of the Rasta culture, doesn't make it stoner music. It was music made by poor black people that got gobbled up by white kids to get baked to. It was very political, very much about oppression, because down in Jamaica you have the 'Really haves' and the 'Really have nots'. Trenchtown is a very violent part of Kingston and Kingston ain't friendly at all.  Bob Marley's music might be tired to some people now because everyone has the 'Legend' CD and has heard it ad nauseum, but do some digging--Kaya, Natty Dread, and Exodus are excellent and are worth a listen. If you don't like Reggae music, then never mind this post. We all have our different tastes, but he was very important.
