Thanks for posting those, BF.
I remember hearing the Pips' version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine in 1967 but I didn't think too much of it. 1968 was a tumultuous year with the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy, the ensuing race riots and the escalation of the war in Viet Nam. Those opening bars of Marvin Gaye's version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine just sounded so pounding and sinister when I first heard it. It still gives me chills when I hear it today.

I think Danny Thomas, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Andy Griffith were asking themselves the same question. ha2ha

No soul there, I'm afaraid. ;D
No, there wasn't! However, PHIL COLLINS wanted to turn a Soul song into a Progressive Rock song, it looks like he succeeded. ROD STEWART tried the same thing with "All Right Now."

I prefer the original version over this one, hands down. The Beach Boys just weren't soulful enough to pull this off. Could've been interesting if they would have let Dennis sing this one, though.

I prefer the original over THE BEACH BOYS' version hands down. However, THE BEACH BOYS dared to try! It must have been confusing for THE BEACH BOYS fans, seeing that the band was known for their Surf Rock music, now trying to record a Soul song. That was a big risk seeing that SMiLE was shelved only to be replaced with SMILEY SMiLE. THE BEACH BOYS' music version of "I Was Made To Love Her" was not soulful like the original, but I do believe that Denny would have done a better job singing the song. Denny's voice does have some soul, he proved it in the song "Slip On Through."

Motown is the greatest, the toppermost of the '60s, up on the tip of the tower with the Beach Boys and the Beatles. I adore Motown records. Life itself is less colorful, more bloody and hard without a Miracles or Temptations or Marvin & Tammi record to see you through.
In my opinion, this is the greatest of all Motown singles, and that's saying quite a bit. It's quintessential:

Tammi Terrell. I wish I had the words to say how much I adore her. That voice...she has got to be my favorite Motown female singer. Diana Ross? HAH!
She is mainly known, of course, as the (greatest) duet partner of Marvin Gaye. They recorded many classics, but I think this is their pinnacle -
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g0aWP-uRbAo (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g0aWP-uRbAo)
...but she recorded some underrated solo tunes, unfortunately forgotten by many.
Check this one out. It's my favorite of her solo singles. Written by Stevie Wonder and would eventually appear on his Hotter Than July album (vastly inferior version IMO), 'All I Do Is Think About You' is sublime, sweet and perfect. The way she sings "if you should discov-uh this dream is for two" leaves me weak in the knees -

Tammi Terrell. I wish I had the words to say how much I adore her. That voice...she has got to be my favorite Motown female singer. Diana Ross? HAH!
She is mainly known, of course, as the (greatest) duet partner of Marvin Gaye. They recorded many classics, but I think this is their pinnacle -
Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - You're All I Need To Get By (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZNbfKibFLE#)
...but she recorded some underrated solo tunes, unfortunately forgotten by many.

Hi Strawberry Field! How are you? TAMMI TERRELL was blessed and gifted with a God-given talent, it is so sad that her life was cut short. The late great MARVIN GAYE never recovered from her death, it broke his heart BAD!

1929: Born on this day, Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, former boxer, composer. He wrote and co-wrote many songs, including "Lonely Teardrops" for Jackie Wilson. The success of this and other early songs helped him get into the recording business. I've seen Wilson refered to as a Motown artist but from what I've read he really wasn't. But since he helped get the ball rolling financially and was extremely cool I'm taking the liberty of posting "Lonely Teardrops" here. ;D

1986: 29 years after its first appearance in the Top Ten, and three years after his untimely death, Jackie Wilson's "Reet Petite" climbs all the way to #1 in the UK.
"Written by Berry Gordy and Tyran Carlo, a pseudonym of Jackie's cousin Billy Davis,[1] and produced by Dick Jacobs, the song is one of the classics of rock and roll music. Taking the title from the Louis Jordan song "Reet, Petite and Gone", this was Jackie Wilson's first recording as a solo artist. The song peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1957 and reached #6 on the UK singles chart. With the success of the song, Gordy was able to fund the launch of Motown Records.
The song was reissued in 1986 following the showing of a clay animation video on the BBC Two documentary series Arena. The reissued version proved so popular that in December 1986, almost three years after Wilson's death, the song became a #1 in the UK for four weeks. This held the record for the longest time between a song's debut on the chart and it finally reaching number one (29 years, 1 month, 11 days) until it was overtaken by Tony Christie's "(Is This the Way to) Amarillo" in 2005."

LMFAO is #1 on Billboard this week with "Sexy and I Know It". Normally that wouldn't even get through my radar but I learned on New Year's Eve that these guys are Berry Gordy's son and grandson. Happy Birthday Barrett Strong! February 5, 1941
He was the man whose “money” helped build Motown: Founding Father Barrett Strong.
Born in Mississippi in 1941, Barrett Strong moved to Detroit in his twenties and did some work with the Atlantic and Tollie imprints before connecting with Berry Gordy. The Motown label didn’t even exist at the time Strong released the Gordy/Janie Bradford hit, “Money” on sister Gwen Gordy’s Anna label. It was the song’s 21-week run and Number 2 showing on the R&B chart that capitalized Gordy’s launch of Motown. To the masses, “Money,” which was also recorded by the Beatles, is Strong’s crowning achievement. But to soul fans, it’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “War” and “Smiling Faces Sometimes,” all songs that Strong wrote with Norman Whitfield as part of the Motown “corporation.”When Motown moved to LA in the ’70s, Strong returned to recording for himself, spinning sides for Epic and Capitol (though with little success). Since then, he’s released a number of indie albums, including a re-release of his Stronghold II in 2008.
