Hello Goodbye

Thanks for that explanation, zipp.  Do you have any idea what "Not arf" means?

Here in the US we had, and still have, Cousin Brucie with all of his catch phrases.  Still remembered is Murry The K with all of his during The Beatles' first US tour in 1964.

Yes, "Not arf" is heard during the Decca Audition...

We all know what happened on that fateful day, 1 January 1962...

Here's a radio programme about him. It has contributions from Paul McCartney and Jimmy Page who have nothing but praise for him.

Interesting! I've bookmarked that to listen to when I have time to pay the proper attention.

I'm going to take a guess at this myself: a British- (cockney-) accented version of "Not half"?? That's how Yorkshire veterinarian author James Herriot wrote his dialogue.

Yes that's it, but I'm not entirely sure it's specifically London cockney (though cockneys certainly like using it).

It does indeed mean "Not half".

So if someone asks you if you like the Stones and you say "Not 'arf", it means you absolutely love the Stones.

Where I come from you could say, for example, "He isn't 'arf daft", meaning he's completely stupid.

It cropped up in a BBC comedy series from a few years ago called "It ain't half hot mum." meaning it's very hot indeed (the show took place in India).

It's worth watching for the different accents on display - scottish, cockney, urbane middle-class, upper-class etc.

The sergeant major is excellent.

I can think of one particular person who used to be in my life that example would apply to.  ha2ha

Great! I will definitely be watching that soon, when I have time to appreciate it and not just skim through.

So rare to see a Beatle in any kind of sporting pursuit.

Thanks for posting that; I knew I'd seen that set before but was drawing a complete blank on the song.

The action on Paul's bass looks really high.

I agree, Kev.  Zoom in on the heel of the neck.  You can see that it has partially pulled out of the mortise.  His Hofner needed a neck reset.  But Paul was a real trooper at that concert.  He continued playing despite the high action.

Paul had a 1961 Hofner 500/1 which served as a backup.  I wonder if he took it on that tour...

Wow that does look high. Playing up the neck would be a bit of a challenge.
