2nd one is the Spanish one JL bought at Fenix Hotel in Madrid on 1965 July the 2nd. The photo was taken at Avenida Palace Hotel in Barcelona on next day

3rd one correponds to the Russian guitars offered to them by the Russian factory which made them. It's at 1965 Autumn

4th one is RS playing GH Ramirez, probably in March 1965

Does anybody know more pics??

Thank you in advance!! ;)

Thank you very much!! ;)

yes. This one was taken in Almeria in SEP-NOV 1966, when JL was there for 6 weeks during the filming of How I won the war.

It was there where he composed 'Strawberry Fields Forever' (=even it seems that there is a home demo recorded there with the Spanish guitar, although I haven't found it yet), so it's possible that he could be playing that song on the photo...

Best!! ;)

This is one of the segments that John reportedly recorded in Spain. There's several other pieces, but this one is the longest.

The development of Strawberry Fields Forever is widely available on bootlegs. I am currently sending you the first stages of the song that John recorded in Spain. The bootlegalbum Strawberry Lane gives an idea of the further development of the song.

I remember to see somewhere other photo from the same day, showing John and this guitar as well, but I can't remember where. Could anybody help me??

BTW: I will upload here ALL the photos I have got so far showing any of The Beatles with Spanish guitars. I will also provide my chronological interpretation of those photos. Meanwhile, I can say that, as far as I can conclude by now, Spanish guitars were used by George Harrison from 1963, July the 30th, until 1965, February the 18th, while John Lennon is seen and/or heard with his from 1965, July the 2nd, until 1967, September the 25th.

Anyway, there are still several 'holes' in my research concerning this topic. Maybe with a little help of my friends (=all of you) I can some day fill those holes... ;)

Thank you in advance and best wishes!! ;)

Thanks -once more- for your kind help Bobber!! ;)

Yes: I got those pics from the Anthology book. The ones in p. 125 are dated 27 February 1964, during 'And I Love Her' rehearsals. The one on p. 137 is dated later in 1964, when John -together with Cynthia, George and Pattie- went on holidays to Tahiti, although the guitar John is playing is not a Spanish one but, in my opinnion, a Hawaiian one. The one in p. 185 is dated Autumn 1965, when they received each a Russian factory guitar. The one on p. 195 is -probably- during 'I'm Looking Trough You' rehearsals, for Rubber Soul in 1965, and John is playing his guitar adquired in Madrid on 2nd. July 1965. The one in p. 194 is not a Spanish guitar but an acoustic one...

Let's wait to see if more photos with Spanish guitars do appear. I think so!! :)

Best!! ;)

Hi Bobber!! ;)

Thank you very much!! ;)

Except one, I didn't know the other photos.

It's clear that GH's ones are from the same session, and the same happens with JL's ones. It's also clear that they wer taken by Astrid during her stay in England in... March 1964?? It's clear as well that JL's are taken at his home and GH's at his (=the flat he shared with RS in London. It's VERY clear that GH is playing his Ramirez. But waht is unclear for me is the guitar JL is playing, as it's not a Spanish guitar and it's no seen in his (=or the others) hands after that session...

Anyway, it's a very good help..

Thank you SO much!! ;)

Yes. The 1st one is dated 26 or 27 February 1964. George is with his Ramirez, probably purchased end of July 1963 at Ivor Mairants music shop in London.

The 2nd ones are from the 'The Fool On THe Hill' rehearsals, and John is with his Spanish guitar purchased in Madrid 2 July 1965...

Thanks for the 'Yes It Is' early takes. The nylon stringed guitar heard there has to be John's one, i.e., the one purchased in Madrid 2 July 1965...

Yes, you are right. That Spanish guitar has to be George's Ramirez then...

It's interesting to see that George used his Ramirez in February-March 1964, for AHDN sessiosn, and again in February-June 1965, for Help-Yes It Is sessions. But it seems he didn't use it for Beatles For Sale sessions at the end of 1964...

There are more pictures taken at this session, but they don't show the Spanish guitar.

I am currently uploading Yes It Is (take 9) and the unexpected That Means A Lot (take 1) in which I think you can hear a Spanish guitar being used. You already have You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (take 1) with the false start. See the link in my signature to download those two songs.

Very good!! Thank you!! ;)

'That Means A Lot' is from the same sessions as YGTHYLA..., isn't it??

You can hear it on take 1, which is on Anthology if I'm correct.

Yes it is. And I read somewhere (=Andy Babiuk?? ) that there are photos from those Rubber Sould sessions -probably 'Michelle' rehearsals- where a capo on John's Spanish guitar is seen. Any hints??

Best!! ;)

Altough I knew the site already..., thank you very much Bobber!! ;)

BTW:

Ricky 360-12 Fire-glo was given to GH in February 1964. He used it mostly in most AHDN numbers and on tour, but NOT after that..., correct??

Gretsch 6119 Tennessean was purchased by GH in late 1964 (=at that site is stated that it was used for the recording of 'Things We Said Today' in 2 June 1964, but it's probably a mistake), used mostly on BFS and Help recordings, and on tour but NOT after that..., correct??

Meanwhile GH says in -at least- fur interviews from 1964 (=February, June, November and again in November) that he admires Segovia's playing very much, that is learning his playing from recordings and is seen and heard in -at least- 11 photos, one video and ca. 6 recordings and/or rehearsals, dated from end of July 1963 to February 1965, playing his Ramirez...

What does rthis mean?? (=if anything)

Best!! ;-)

This pic still puzzles me. Ringo is playing George's Ramirez but..., when and where??

He is he sitting on a drums stool..., isn't he??

Paul is at the back with his Epiphone Casino, which he purchased in December 1964..., didn't he??

George's haircut seems to be like the one at BFS cover..., doesn't it??

The man on the left seems to be John..., doesn't he??

On the flor seems to be some cables, like the ones used at recording (=or TV) studios...

Is the venue Abbey Road Studios?? Any chamber room at any theatre??

Has anybody any thoughts about when and where the pic was taken??

Best!! ;)

From the book 'The Fab Four Faq'

..."In late 1965 Paul purchased an Epiphone Casino...and both John, and George, impressed with the guitar's sound, bought one in early 1966...."

Here is a link from a site called "The Canteen" by John Crowley. Some of you might already know about it. For all I know he might be a poster on here... but anyway,

http://www.thecanteen.com/lennon5.html

He mentions Yes It Is and also Anytime At All which I found interesting and sent him an email about where he found that info....

Just an FYI...

I have to admit , in the beginning I thought the whole nylon string pursuit was a little nutty but now Im totally engrossed in it!

Nevertheless it seems that that info is not correct as most Beatle scholars (=Everett, Babiuk, Lewisohn, etc.) place the purchasing date of Paul's Casin on Decemebr 1964. In fact, his Casino is heard at some Help numbers..., isn't it??

It is tuned to B. I used it on a recording once and slackened the B off. I accidentally hit it in the recording a few times and it gave a very nice double bass slack tone which I left in the take. I did have a few goes at playing bass runs with the B into certain chords and could see the benefits but did not keep it up.

Heres the link to recording of the guitar. http://www.myspace.com/wwwhelpasacouk
Track is called Hope & play that I wrote for a friend who was ill and sadly since passed away.

A one take wonder on all the tracks and bear in mind I'm a singer/bass player first! heheheh. I think the lead guitar over it was either a Takemine G series or my Ovation Custom balladeer....I cannay remember.
I'll find out from Ken about the wood he used. I know he likes exotic and rare timbers.

Hi Bobber,

Thank you VERY much!! Excellent photos...

They are in Sta. Isabel house (=Almeria) when he composed STF...

BTW: at my conference at Ramirez shop in Madrid last May the 9th., I gave the new that George's Ramirez Spanish guitar was bought by Klaus Voormann in May 1963, on his return back to Germany from Tenerife (=you already know: PM, GH, RS and Astrid Kirchherr spent 10 days at Voormann familiy house in Tenerife from April the 28th. to May the 10th that year. There are photos from those days which you probably know...) What I didn't know that very day (=i.e.: last May the 9th.) was George's Ramirez guitar whereabouts. I finally have found it: it's in Friar's Park. I'm trying to get a photo of it, although it's VERY difficult, because George's family is VERY private...

Best!! ;)

Nice picture, Xose. It's pretty hard to tell what guitar that is. Could well be one of the Russian ones.

There's a date underneath the picture. Could that be right?

I don't think so, as there is no signs of fret markers..

...There's a date underneath the picture. Could that be right?

That date looks like JAN 77 which, IMHO, do not correspond to the photo date...

Thanks!! ;)

On 30 SEP 1964 they had returned back from a tour in the USA. On 30 SEP 1964 they spent the whole day recording songs for the Beatles for sale álbum, one of the songs being 'No Reply'. If you take a close listening to this song (=mainly early outakes) you will hear a nylon guitar...

You're welcome, Xosé.  I downloaded the original picture you posted a few days ago and blew that one up.

Now I also have a nice view of George's 1963 Gretsch Country Gentleman and its case which are just like mine (also a 1963)!  I can see how he set his tone and pickup switches too.

Yes, let's keep researching.

Colo guitar... Congrats!! ;)

a) Amalia Ramírez believes that is a gigbag for a Soanish guitar from that era

b) On 30 SEP 1964 -when that photo was taken- The Beatles recorded 'No Reply', which includes a nylon guitar

a + b = ?? ;D

Again -as in TTWY- a change of "mood", from the electric one on Take 1, to the "acoustic" (=including Ringo "Latín" feel) on Take 2...

VERY interesting...

Oh, since you know guitars, Xosé, that's a Gibson Gibson Tune-O-Matic bridge on my Country Gent replacing the original bar bridge which resides in the case.

Yes.  The Tune-O-Matic has an ebony foot to match the fretboard.

Gretsch should have set up the Country Gentleman with an adjustable bridge.

What about TTWY Spanish guitar??

Well. There is no photographic evidence so far, and according to Voormann own words:

«In the later part of 1963, Klaus traveled to London and visited his friends, The Beatles. It was during this time that he gave George the Ramírez Classical. Voormann remembers, "When I came back to London, George saw me play the guitar and I played him some classical pieces and he was knocked out the way I was playing the guitar. Then he was using it a lot in the studio for A Hard Day's Night and in the filming he was using it as well"»

But we have this quote from Ivor Mairants, My Fifty Fretting Years, Newcastle, Ashley Mark, 1980, pp. 102-103:

«It [Ivor Mairants Music Centre, at the Oxford Street end of Rathbone Place, London] opened on 1 September 1962... The Beatles and The Shadows were then very strong and both Paul McCartney and Hank Marvin bought Ramírez flamenco guitars quite independently of one another to add an additional effect to their groups»

Opinions welcome...

Best!! ;)

How strong or well-known were The Beatles precisely on September 1st 1962? Moreover, if Paul did purchase a Ramirez on that day, it certainly wasn't used for a long time. That is, not on Beatles recordings.

Maybe it was purchased just before 30 July 1963 by EMI?? Or rented/borrowed by EMI for that session??
