I never knew the Cat in the Hat was a member of the Hollies. You learn something new every day!

Yeah, I like them too. Singer Allan Clarke quit only a couple of years ago because his voice gave up more or less. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Tony Hicks is still around with the Hollies and so is the drummer (sorry, forgot his name).

So glad there's a Hollies thread, thanks pc31!

I'm obsessing over them the last week or so. Got their greatest hits. Trying to sing all the parts (in the car, to avoid "disturbing the peace" charges  :)), Graham Nash sings SOOOO high! I think in general they sing a fourth or a fifth above the Beatles. I think in terms of harmonies, they are equal to, or even .... nah, can't bring myself to say it, but they are GOOD!

"Hey Carrie Anne ..."  :)

Still they made good songs in the 70s

The Baby features Swedish Vocalist Mikael Rickfors. This song was their only real commercial success while Allan Clarke had left to persue a solo career.

I liked 'The Baby', but it was so un-Hollies like. Wasn't it the only thing he recorded with them?

I'm a little confused about that high harmony...

In the 1964 show by pc31 (where they did "Rocking Robin" and "Just One Look"), Graham Nash didn't seem to be on stage.

Yet that high harmony sounded just about the same as on my Greatest Hits CD.

Did he come on board later, for their monster hits (Carry Anne, Bus Stop, Carousel, Look Through Any Window)? Or are some of those hits recorded with his predecessor singing, not Graham Nash?

And, OT a bit, it seems like there must have been a queue of excellent VERY high harmony singers around ... I always thought Paul was pretty high, but those guys make him seem like a baritone in comparison ... no falsetto ... incredible!

Alexis,

Wasn't that Graham Nash on the far right playing electric guitar?  I know he was one of the original members and left the group in 1968.

Here's a photo of the Hollies with Graham Nash 2nd on the left:

Hi, Hello Goodbye ...

I'll look again, and compare with the pics you posted, thanks! I was basing my (?) on that I didn't see the name "Graham Nash" subtitled like the other names, I may have just missed it.

I'd guess by the interest you have in posting here, maybe you are a Holliephilomaniac as well?

Doctor, I need a cure!
Title: Re: the hollies
Post by: Hello Goodbye on March 05, 2009, 06:51:19 PM
I'm afraid there's no cure, Alexis.   :)

Yes, I've enjoyed The Hollies since the "British Invasion."  During the late 60s, we saw Stephen Stills and Neil Young from Bufallo Springfield, David Crosby from The Byrds and Graham Nash form CSN&Y.

What a great time that was!

Here's a screen capture from The Hollies' NME 1964 appearance.  Just one look and you'll see a very young Graham Nash.

Yes, Alexis, his high harmony is quite recognizable.

A pair of 45's really opened my eyes

With just one look and I was a big mess
Cuz that long cool woman had it all.

You know, to this moment I never knew what the words were, it was like he was drunk or something when he was singing them. Anyone else have trouble understanding them when they first heard them?

And, BTW, I don't see any "45s" in that pic...

Title: Re: the hollies
Post by: Hello Goodbye on March 10, 2009, 02:19:15 AM
Well, she's not facing us directly, Alexis.   ;)

I've always felt that "a pair of .45s" was a double entendre referring to both her endowment and to the dangerous atmosphere and prevalence of hand guns in that "bootleggin' boozer."

Here are the lyrics in full:

Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
Whiskey bottles piling high

Bootleggin' boozer on the west side
Full of people who were doing wrong
Just about to call up the D.A. man
When I heard this woman singing a song.

A pair of .45's really opened my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a five-nine, beautiful, tall.
With just one look I was a bad mess
Cuz that long cool woman had it all.

I saw her head up to the table
With a tall-walkin' big black cat
Charlie said "I hope that you're able, boy,
'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at."

Well suddenly we heard the sirens
And everybody started to run
Jumpin' out of doors and tables
When I heard somebody shootin' the gun

Well the D.A. was pumpin' my left hand
And she was holding my right
I told her "Don't get scared,
Cuz you're gonna be spared,"
I gotta be forgiving if I wanna spend my livin'
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a five-nine, beautiful, tall.
With just one look I was a bad mess
Cuz that long cool woman had it all.
Had it all.....had it all!  (fades out)

Cool opening riff!
Cool lyrics!
Cool song!

Cool lyrics!
Cool song!

Thanks for those lyrics, Hello Goodbye - I finally know what they're singing, woo hoo! Yeah, that riff is very cool, another great 60s (70s) guitar riff song, in the tradition of Day Tripper.

Double entendre ... maybe like in "...our favorite American group - Sophie Tucker*"!

just joined this forum....

I am a Lifelong Beatles fan...AND Hollies fan ! - plus Shadows, Ventures, Stones, Who, Kinks, Moody Blues, Beach Boys, Four Seasons, Chicago, BS & T, CSN (Y) pink Floyd, Cream, Hendrix, Creedence.....and MANY more !

The Hollies are one of the most underrated & "unknown" bands to have had 32 UK hits....some 315 Worldwide Chart placings, 62 worldwide Album chart placings....and even MORE UK "Official" singles chart hits than The Beatles (discounting Re-issues)....

Obviously The Beatles are THE BIGGEST band ever....and comparing ANYONE to them is unfair and pointless....yet when taking The Fab Four as the "Benchmark" & comparing all other bands careers to The Beatles....the Hollies, worldwide, do in fact stand up VERY STRONGLY....

up to 1970, when The Beatles disbanded They had 22 UK chart hits....as ALSO did The Hollies & The Dave Clark Five....while The Rolling Stones in fact had around 15 hits....The Kinks 20 hits...& The Who 12 hits !

...While The Shadows had 23 UK chart hits....up to 1967 (More later after 1973 too) ....plus LOADS more Backing Cliff Richard up to 1966... !

ANY questions you may have re The Hollies just ask & I will try to answer if I can...

This is another song that I love. I think what is so appealing about The Hollies, The Moody Blues and of course The Beatles is their longevity. It's like we got a couple of different bands in one with each of them. Oh and The Stones and The Who too of course.

'Look Through Any Window' was one of the very first songs I learned to play on the drums. Still love it to this day.

Another one of my favorites.

The Hollies - Elevated Observations

I'm glad you've posted some of the later material. For some reason they have never come up when I've searched for the Hollies on YouTube. They help me understand how Graham Nash made the move from the Hollies to CS&N.

Yeah, they seem to be associated more with the earlier stuff, but I like all of their stuff. Glad you dig them too Kelley.

I can lay clain to actually getting to know one of the Hollies, original bass player Eric Haydock opened a guitar shop in the town where I lived in the UK, I was working as a local guitar teacher and had an add in his shop and bought my supplies (strings etc) there..

I was in there one afternoon and he asked me if I wanted a coffee, we sat in his back room chatting about people like John Lennon and ray davies, both of whom he knew from the 60's, I realized this was the closest I would ever get to The Beatles.

Even so that's a very neat thing that you got to know him. I didn't realize there was another bass player before Bernie Calvert until I posted that "Look Through Any Window" video.

Visiting The Hollies was my first concert, that I saw.

It was in 1969 in Duisburg, Germany.
I remember all of them were dressed in white, and Terry Sylvester has just replaced Graham Nash.

It was a fantastic adventure, I was eleven years old.

It must be Hollies season, Barry! The other night I was on YouTube and came across the video you posted here of the Carousel sessions. Of course that led to listening on Amazon and the next thing I knew, it was late...again! I was following along with the lyrics for Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress and laughed at the error they contained:

A pair of moneybags made me open my eyes.  ha2ha

A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just-a 5' 9" beautiful, tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all

ha2ha Yeah, that’s cute and I think they always did that sort of thing in the Carrie Ann videos I’ve seen. It beats playing awkwardly and ignoring the obvious!

Oh cool; now there’s a bonus, two from ‘63 with Don Rathbone. Bravo, Professor!

I agree, Stevie. The Air That I Breathe was a hit during the summer I turned 11 so I was a bit too young to grasp the whole meaning. That was also the summer that I first saw American Graffiti, a movie that introduced me to music I’d never heard before but fell in love with instantly. I saw it with my three cousins and why the two older ones agreed to take their little sister, who was almost 11, and me I’ll never know. I’m so glad they did though, because not only did I see my first PG (parental guidance suggested) movie, I have the memory of the four of us riding home and belting out the chorus of The Air That I Breathe when it came on the radio. That was the best night of that summer and, quite possibly, of my whole childhood.

I was a similar age when  The Air That I  Breathe was a hit. Great song that is really evocative of the time. Great melody and harmonies. Hollies carried it off perfectly.

It’s funny (in a sort of way) that the guy who wrote it said the girl he wrote it for wasn’t that good looking. A bit ugly really. But very nice person inside.  ??? Odd thing to recall and say out loud about a song but he seemed to assume that everyone thought such a song was written for some spectacular beauty.
