The winner is Melanie Coe, who went on to be Paul's inspiration for "She's Leaving Home". Kind of a strange coincidence, not to mention a stange video. ;)

Aww, I remember Jason. He was quite talented but I think he just got overwhelmed with the amount of work involved. How was this season? I don't have cable anymore and Idol is one of the few shows that I used to watch but can't find online. I remember that one season during Beatles week there was this one little girl who did not know who The Beatles were! I guess it made it pretty hard to pick a song!

Right on Hello Goodbye! I LOVE SPEEDING! I LOVE TO DRIVE FAST! I just purchased a RARE 2012 Chrysler 300S with a high performance 6.0 Motor. Believe me when I tell you that this car haul's a*s! The fastest I have ever driven a car is near 200 M.P.H. How fast were you driving?

I noticed the shadow of the camera, its really amazing how far audio and video technology has come!

You have to keep the windows open on the circuit. I had a windscreen on the camera but it still picked up a lot of wind noise.

I was jealous when you drove at the Pocono Speedway and I'm jealous again. I want to go fast!
Actually, it's the road course section of the circuit that is the most fun. It takes time to master that.
Going fast? The NASCAR drivers go more than 200 MPH on that track while bump drafting. There's an old saying at Daytona: "Whatever goes down must come up"
2011 Daytona 500 The Big One Crash Nascar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-Oq2PL_IUk#)

I'm not sure I could be the one driving but I'd gladly sit in the passenger seat with someone who could. I guess i know how fast I'm capable of going around here but it cost too much so I won't be doing that again!
-
But the three-day event I was at was just a driving event. No racing. I got 450 more miles of SAFE experience on that track over that weekend.

That's kind of how it was teaching my youngest to drive. Only much slower. Much, much slower! ;)

But I admire the instructors at these events. At Daytona they were seasoned Rolex series drivers. They knew how to be passengers as well as they could race cars.

I should watch not only Chaplin and "Metroplis". There are a lot of great actors and actresses and movies from the Gorlden Era of Hollywood and also of the silent movies Era. My wife and me, we watch from time to time 30s-40s movies, which are much better then modern Hollywood.

I DO remember that show, now that you mention it. I hadn't thought about it for years. I also remember babysitting for paltry sums a few years before you did. I usually got .75/hour and the family next door only gave me .50! I didn't know that was bad until I started sitting for other families. I made up for it in volume though. :)

That's what the narrator said, Kathy. Inflammable means flammable or combustible. It also means easily excited. It's one of those crazy English words which can be misinterpreted, here as an antonym of flammable, and should be retired from use.
Did you want to change your screen name to Lafayette? ;D
-
I think it must have been common in years past to use "inflammable" instead of "flammable". I just came across that in something I was reading in my genealogy research. I can't remember the context but it must have been from the the 1850's to 1900. That's where I've been lately. Another thing they used to do was write to-day. And they put periods at the end of everything they wrote, even names. My grandma used to do that.
-
Thanks, Kelley and Barry; I was not aware of that. Interesting!

We have some Red Foxes in our back fields and have seen them doing this several times over the years! It's pretty funny to watch.
It's also amazing to know how many Voles are running around under the snow. I run my snow blower in a big circle around a tray feeder so the ground feeding birds can get some seed and have seen lots of critters running for their lives as the blower rocks their world. It's a busy place under the snow!

I don't know if anyone else likes listening to this sort of thing but I love hearing '60's AM radio broadcasts. This is from WKBW radio in Buffalo, NY. DJ Joey Reynolds claimed to hate The Beatles although he wrote an instrumental called, oddly enough, "The Beatle" This was recorded by a locally successful band, "The Buddies". He also claimed that Brian Epstein was trying to force him to change the name of the song but I can't find any evidence of that. I suspect it was all just a running publicity thing. DJ Danny Neaverth, who is totally nuts, is also on here. Buffalo was actually the first choice over Washington, DC for The Beatles' February 10th, 1964 concert but these two guys turned down the opportunity to bring them here. Oops.

There's a lot of poetry in the novel which I'm sure lost a bit in the translation to English:
Winter's Night
Blizzards were blowing everywhere
Throughout the land.
A candle burned upon the table,
A candle burned.
As midgets in the summer fly
Towards a flame,
The snowflakes from the yard swarmed to
The window pane.
And, on the glass, bright snowy rings
And arrows formed.
A candle burned upon the table,
A candle burned.
And on the white illumined ceiling
Shadows were cast,
As arms and legs and destinies
Fatefully crossed.
Two slippers fell on to the floor
With a light sound,
And waxen tears dripped from the candle
On to a gown.
No object in the misty whiteness
Could be discerned.
A candle burned upon the table,
A candle burned.
A mild draught coming from the corner
Blew on the candle,
Seduction's heat raised two wings crosswise
As might an angel.
It snowed and snowed that February
All through the land.
A candle burned upon the table,
A candle burned.

There'll be no one in the house
Save for twilight. All alone,
Winter's day seen in the space that's
Made by curtains left undrawn.
Only flash-past of the wet white
Snowflake clusters, glimpsed and gone.
Only roofs and snows, and save for
Roofs and snow - no one at home.
Once more, frost will trace its patterns,
I'll be haunted once again
By my last-year's melancholy,
By that other wintertime.
Once more I'll be troubled by an
Old, un-expiated shame,
And the icy firewood famine
Will press on the window-pane.
But the quiver of intrusion
Through those curtain folds will run
Measuring silence with your footsteps,
Like the future, in you'll come.
You'll appear there in the doorway
Wearing something white and plain,
Something in the very stuff from
Which the snowflakes too are sewn.
***

February. Get ink, shed tears.
Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,
While torrential slush that roars
Burns in the blackness of the spring.
Go hire a buggy. For six grivnas,
Race through the noise of bells and wheels
To where the ink and all you grieving
Are muffled when the rain shower falls.
To where, like pears burnt black as charcoal,
A myriad rooks, plucked from the trees,
Fall down into the puddles, hurl
Dry sadness deep into the eyes.
Below, the wet black earth shows through,
With sudden cries the wind is pitted,
The more haphazard, the more true
The poetry that sobs its heart out.
***

This surprises me, Kathleen. The Forum Bookworm has not read Doctor Zhivago?!
I think you'll like the novel and the poetry. There's an interesting story behind it. The novel was refused publication in the USSR because it dwelled on the personal life which socialist doctrine rejected. The manuscript was smuggled to Italy where it was first published. In the USSR, manuscripts were typed and copied (samizdat) and circulated from reader to reader. There were harsh penalties for copying or being in possession of censored material. Boris Pasternak's life was made very difficult as a result and he was threatened with arrest and deportation as an enemy of the state. He won the 1958 Nobel Prize for Literature which he had to decline. He was told that if he traveled to Stockholm to accept the award, he would be refused re-entry to the Soviet Union. He wrote this to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev: "Leaving the motherland will equal death for me. I am tied to Russia by birth, by life and work."
The motion picture is loosely based on the novel but is epic in proportions and was a treat to see in the movie theater. It remains the highest grossing film of all time. I think you'll enjoy the film for its various character studies shown against the tumultuous backdrop of World War I and The Russian Revolution.
This particular scene exemplifies the experience shared by both the novel's protagonist and the author...

Thanks so much for the background information, Barry; that is really interesting. Now I will definitely have to get a copy.
I was teased for years in high school, and even college, about my love of reading, and so I self-consciously gave it up for a few years. In grad school I tried to make up for lost time. I remember the first book I picked up was Pearl Buck's The Good Earth; it's still a top favorite of mine.
I also need to know details such as this for my work. I was reprimanded last year for not catching a misspelling of Anne Sexton's name....and I see I erroneously abbreviated the "Doctor" in Doctor Zhivago.
The thought of typing up copies of that book -- it's quite lengthy, is it not? -- is really daunting.

I'm glad they cut that scene; it smacks of an ill-advised attempt to get a laugh.

It's neat to hear what US radio was like at the time.
For historical presentation only, this was recorded off a radio station broadcast in late february 1963 on a Fisher console reel to reel recorder. This is the first known Beatle record ever broadcasted in America ( play it here 5:56 ) .... long before they became famous about a year later. Source "The Dick Biondi Show, WLS in Chicago. Recorded on a home recorder directly off a live radio broadcast approximately 750 miles from the broadcast station in the state of Delaware in late February 1963. At 5:56 on the video is Dick Biondi's introduction of the Beatles' song "Please Please Me." Dick Biondi's induction into the "Radio Broadcast Hall of Fame " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYOYWW... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYOYWW...) I wish at the time I just kept the recorder going but I was trying to conserve recording tape so I did real time editing by stopping the recorder after the song and quickly starting the recorder when Mr. Biondi was starting to introduce the next song. The exact recording time and date would have been identified by a continuous recording of the programs. As of now I know it was done in a 3 week window from mid February 1963 to early March. I had just turned 14 at that time. Wow what memories these tapes bring back to me. Terrestrial Radio unfortunately will never be this exciting for current popular music again............ Mitch Godwin

I'm very skeptical of this as he names the band and song title very quickly without any description. Otherwise I'd assume he would have taken the time to mention that this is an unheard band from the UK. Nothing, noda! ??? The Beatles were just barely starting to get big in the EU at this point.
Now saying that, the UK single was released earlier, January 11 1963, while the actual LP came out March 22 1963, so it is possible the DJ got the 45 from the UK.
That's my 2 cents, I've been wrong before! :-X

Vee Jay released Please Please Me in the United States on 7 February 1963...
-
Well, buckle my shoes, I stand corrected! ;D
I actually forgot about the Vee-Jay releases and all the court orders from Capitol records to stop Vee Jay from re-releasing this and a few other songs by the Beatles in 63-64.
Now I am less skeptical..... ;yes Still funny, how the DJ put no effort mentioning anything about the Beatles.
-
I actually forgot about the Vee-Jay releases and all the court orders from Capitol records to stop Vee Jay from re-releasing this and a few other songs by the Beatles in 63-64.
"The second US release of the song came on January 3rd, 1964, when the single was re-released by Vee Jay records as a Beatlemania hit. Instead of having “Ask Me Why” as its’ B-side (as it was back in February 1963), they paired it with their second failed US single “From Me To You.” It made a huge impact on the Billboard charts this time around, peaking at number three, not being able to pass “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” in the top two positions. And Vee Jay actually spelled the Beatles name correctly this time."
Beatles Books (http://www.beatlesebooks.com/please-please-me)
Now I am less skeptical..... ;yes
"Although WLS in Chicago did give the song airplay (February 8th being the date of the first time The Beatles were heard on American radio), as well as placing for a couple weeks in their local charts, the single failed to take hold nationally. The song did not make any dent on the Billboard charts. This was just as well, since the artist listed on the label, as well as on promotional ads, was misspelled as “The Beattles.” The lucky 7,310 people who have obtained a copy through the years now have a highly prized collectors’ item."Beatles Books (http://www.beatlesebooks.com/please-please-me)
Still funny, how the DJ put no effort mentioning anything about the Beatles.
"The record was not adequately promoted and despite the tremendous success of its U.K. counterpart, where it topped the singles charts compiled by New Musical Express and Melody Maker, as well as reaching number two on the Record Retailer chart (now called the U.K. Singles Chart and most widely quoted today), it did not chart at all in America. It was the first record in America bearing The Beatles name, and it was a flop."The Beatles Rarity (http://www.thebeatlesrarity.com/2011/06/12/the-first-u-s-single-to-bear-the-beatles-name%E2%80%A6and-the-name-wasnt-even-spelled-correctly/comment-page-1/)
It seems that Mr.Biondi would have needed a crystal ball to realize that the band whose record he was about to play deserved any fanfare. Or a really good source in the UK. Indeed, given the poor promotion attached to this release it's really a miracle he played it at all. And this was the day after its release. I think he did quite well.

When I was listening to that saxophone solo I kept thinking that it sounded familiar. I was trying to remember what other song I’d heard with a sketchy sax solo in it. Then I came across this interview with Jim Freeman from the Five Satins. I found out that even he agrees with our assessment and what the other song was.

I just had to vent in a neutral spot. Well, sort of a neutral spot.

And it was interesting comparing the saxophone styles of Stan Getz and Ruud Brink.
The Girl From Ipanema was a big hit in 1964. The original recording two years earlier sounded like this...

Interesting that Stevie Wonder plays it in the key of f but if he's in South America he plays it in d-flat which is the original key and I guess he does it how to respect for its South American roots.

The first 49 seconds of this clip depict almost exactly how my mornings would go with my own kids. And yes, I have sprayed them with water. Never tipped anyone out of bed, though, but I did get an air horn, which I had to use only once. After that, the threat was enough. ha2ha

From Wikipedia:
Together, Astaire and Powell danced to Porter's "Begin the Beguine", which is considered by many to be one of the greatest tap sequences in film history. According to accounts of the making of this film, including a documentary included on the DVD release, Astaire was somewhat intimidated by Powell, who was considered the only female dancer ever capable of out-dancing Astaire. In his autobiography Steps in Time, Astaire remarked, "She 'put 'em down like a man', no ricky-ticky-sissy stuff with Ellie. She really knocked out a tap dance in a class by herself." In his introduction to the clip, featured in That's Entertainment, Frank Sinatra said, "You know, you can wait around and hope, but I tell ya, you'll never see the likes of this again."

I have a question about the Titanic. Is it true that a fire started in one of her coal bunkers prior to her departure and continued to burn for several days into her maiden voyage?
Yes. Some scholars, noted ocean linter historian Senan Molony among them, believe that weakened her hull and contributed to the sinking, although not everyone agrees with that theory.

Thank-you for confirming that, Kathy. That's even more reason, other than the insufficient number of lifeboats aboard, why the Titanic should not have sailed on April 10th. I'm sure Captain Smith knew about the fire. He should have considered his ship not seaworthy. The captain of a ship is ultimately responsible for the safety of all souls aboard his vessel. The same rule applies to the pilot of an aircraft. The Pilot-in-Command determines if his aircraft is airworthy during during the pre-flight inspection and run-up prior to takeoff. I remember once cancelling my planned flight when the engine of my aircraft did not pass the magneto check during run-up. My passenger was disappointed but understood and accepted my decision when I explained the situation to her.

Well . . . I'm not sure he knew about it. And as coal fires were common on board ships of that era, I don't think it would have made the vessel not seaworthy. And the decision on lifeboats wasn't his to make; that was the Board of Trade's decision. Alexander Carlisle pleaded for more lifeboats but was rebuffed.
But I don't want to quibble. ;) Now, though, I'm more incentivized to get my ocean liner books unpacked and read the ones I haven't gotten to yet so I can refresh my memory.

You'll enjoy reading about them, Kathy. The red cross markings on the WWII USS Hope did not dissuade Japanese suicide pilots from attacking her. And Project Hope (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) has a very special history that continues until today.

Neither do I, of course. But it turned out to be not such a trivial matter. At least rules were changed after the Titanic disaster.
Now didn't the Titanic almost collide with the SS City of New York as she departed Southampton...

It's a good thing that tugboat was there pulling with all her might! :)
But maybe not. A collision in the Southampton port would have prevented the disaster that occurred four days later.

I watched the whole video with great interest. There were two lifeboats that were lowered away prior to the captain giving the order. The propellers were at water level and were spinning causing the lifeboats to be drawn into them with the loss of all aboard. They were the only souls that were lost in the incident.

I liked a lot of Donovan's stuff although I think a lot of his late 60s tunes suffered from poor production. The studio version of this I find is overly mannered and baroque but this live version brings the songs qualities out.
I'm surprised there hasn't been bit of a Donovan revival as he could be seen as a forerunner of the gentle-voiced acoustic singer songwriters of the 2010s like James Vincent McMorrow, Bon Iver and Ed Sheeran.

Thanks so much for sharing those, Barry! I have not in fact heard of this young man. I shouldn't say this, but I question his knowledge level right off the bat given that he identified Titanic "in full" as Royal Mail Ship Titanic. It was in fact Royal Mail Steamship Titanic. The title is quite important given the hoops through which a vessel had to jump to obtain that qualification. Also, I question whether, in one of his previews, Jack Phillips and Harold Bride were the "heroes" of Titanic. ;) Well all know the true hero was Bruce Ismay. (I'm KIDDING! ha2ha )
But it's great that he's getting stuff out there and educating people. I'll have to watch the clips tomorrow as my day is coming to an end right now.

That was a quote from the Encyclopedia Britannica that appeared in the video description. In the video, he refers to the Titanic as either "Titanic" or "RMS Titanic."

I wanted to see what Sam said was the cause of The Britannic's demise. I always thought the ship was torpedoed by a U-boat but I found out it had struck a mine.
Still, young Same narrated the history of The Britannic and its sister ships replete with model ships which he held up at the required times. I hope he has interests other than sinking ships.

How do you know that Eric Sauder is a Gilbert & Sullivan fan?
I knew him for years through the ocean liner forums. We communicated privately for years online and over the phone. Same with his brother Bill, who's a Titanic expert. They're both wonderful, down-to-earth people. I lost touch with both of them after we moved to Nevada with yet another email change and the disorganization and distraction of moving cross-country with three kids under age 5. And then Eric moved cross-country in the opposite direction.
I also learned from Eric that Gilbert & Sullivan fans are often referred to as Savoyards. I hadn't known that.
P.S. Today is the 107th anniversary of the Lusitania's sinking. :'(

What is overbearing music?
Old movies reminds me opera, a theater with music non-stop. I love opera, especially grand opera.

I love opera, especially grand opera.
I just started listening to and watching operas about a year ago. It's one of the few musical genres I was unfamiliar with, and clearly I've been missing out.
Our local theater broadcasts the Met Opera live every few months. Next Saturday's is La Traviata, and I'm scrambling to catch up on work so I can attend. I'm really hoping I can make it, because the opera after that is Lohengrin, but I don't care for Wagner. And after Lohengrin, nothing until the spring. I can stream them at home, or course, but the big screen is better. Attending an opera in person would be wonderful, but . . . that's not gonna happen until I can get out of state.

I was watching Vertigo from 1958 the other night and the score is overwhelming. Really loud and quite annoying.
Blue Ray is particularly bad for this, often i have to adjust the volume settings because the music drowns out the voices.
I watched Hang em High, Clint Eastwood movie. The loud orchestra at times sounded corny Da Da Da Da Dah..... ha2ha

Wow! That's great, Kathy!
I started listen to the opera when I divorced my first wife but hadn't met a new one yet.
I was lonely, I read Nietzsche and so my first opera was Wagner's Tristan and Isolde roll:) I was serious.
La Traviata is one of the best operas! But be careful, modern minimalist productions can spoil the impression.
Have you seen Rigoletto? It is ideal grand opera, nothing more, everything is in place.
But it took me maybe 5 times of listening before the understanding came to me and I fell in love with it.
This guy is helped much me to understand and to love opera:

Thanks for sharing that video, Dmitry; I'll have to watch it when I get a bit more caught up.
I have not yet seen Rigoletto, but it is on my list! I have read online about the modern tendency to take a minimalist approach to opera; I haven't seen a minimalist one yet, but I don't think I'd like it. My tastes in general run toward the traditional.
When I have watched operas, I print out the libretto ahead of time so I can (try to) more clearly understand what is going on. The only one I've seen on the big screen was Turandot, which had subtitles superimposed at the top of the screen. That helped. :)

I wasn't being entirely funny, Kathy. If A Night To Remember was accurate. the baker helped several people find their way to the the ship's deck so they could evacuate. I saw that he even threw a deck lounge to someone in the water to help that passenger keep afloat. Did he give testimony in the hearings as to this? If it was true, even the little he did during the sinking qualifies him as a hero.

Charles Joughin, my favorite Titanic person! He spent most of the sinking in the bakery, drinking. I probably would have made the same choice. I've always been a bit puzzled that he did not succumb to hypothermia given that alcohol is a vasodilator. This article clarifies that:

Right, Kathy. Dr. Giesbrecht's explanation of the physiology involved is sound. Peripheral vasodilation was reversed when Charles Joughin was immersed in the -2C water. The resultant peripheral vasoconstriction kept warmer blood centrally. That, coupled with his inebriated state and not panicking, allowed him to survive the sinking.
He was a lucky man, indeed! <hiccup> ;)

Aww, that's so touching.
I haven't seen ANTR in years. I have it on VHS but no VHS player. I should stream it.
I've heard such great reviews of the 3D images in the re-released version of Cameron's film that I'm tempted to go see it in the theaters. I'm weighing the thrill of seeing the ship on the big screen in 3D versus sitting through the Jack-and-Rose plot again.
I found this promotional poster extremely moving, in my opinion the best of all of them:

Aww, that's so touching.
Yes, it is. The subplot there was that he asked Andrews early on about the fate of the ship saying he wasn't the panicking kind. And Andrews gave him a truthful answer. From that point on, he did all he could to be reassuring to his wife and children and got them on a lifeboat saying that he'll be getting on another. It was heartbreaking to see him later on deck looking out to the lifeboats trying to catch a last glimpse of his family.
You don't have to stream the movie. There it is perpetually on YouTube to be watched any time you want.
As I said, I've never seen the 1997 Titanic movie, just the fan-made version you posted leaving out all the Jack and Rose stuff. I think A Night To Remember is the better movie.

That's based on fact, but not a specific individual, I don't think. I've read there was at least one man who reassured his children and/or wife that he'd be getting on a boat later, knowing full well he wouldn't. Cameron's movie has a scene similar to the one you posted.

Kathy, it's been years since I last read Walter Lord's A Night To Remember. The first time I read it was when I was 14 for an eighth grade book report. The book was written about ten years before that.
I still have the book in my library. It's time to re-read it. I'll look for any type of reference. I'm sure several similar scenes played out that awful night.

Please don't restrict yourself to that one book. There are many excellent scholars out there who have built on Lord's work. He himself admitted as such.

Walter Lord's research and interviews were still timely in 1955. Please suggest a more recent work that Mr. Lord admitted expounded upon his efforts.

I'm afraid I don't have time right now to track down which ones Lord commented on specifically. There are too many. The only one that comes to mind is Dan Butler's The Other Side of the Night. He met with Lord personally before beginning it and wrote it with Lord's encouragement and endorsement. It's the third part of Lord's trilogy, the first two being A Night to Remember and The Night Lives On. But you've already dismissed Butler.
You should take this question to Encyclopedia Titanica. You'd probably get your answer within a minute.

This is TikTok, not YouTube. My younger daughter sent it to me on our family chat thread. It brought back fond memories of the near-heart attacks I experienced while teaching my three kids to drive: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRnFvLX6/ (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRnFvLX6/)
I don't think you need an account to view this short (13-seconds) clip; I don't have one and was able to watch it.
I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. So glad these days are behind me!

I'd like to read The Night Lives On. I didn't know Walter Lord wrote a follow up book.
When did I dismiss Butler? :)
I must have been in a dismay mood if I did. ;D

It's good! You should check it out.
When did I dismiss Butler? :)
Several months back, when I mentioned his speculation in The Other Side of the Night that Captain Lord of the Californian likely was a sociopath. I got into it with someone on Encyclopedia Titanica about that, too, but I maintain my position. But I don't want to get into another argument. ;)
I must have been in a dismay mood if I did. ;D
Verrry funny. :)

Watched this for the first time in a while. The Who playing a Quick One at the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. After this performance no wonder the Stones shelved the film so they didnt suffer in comparison. Also the filming of the performance is great by Michael Lindsay-Hogg.

Ha ha yes. John was very stolid. But his fingers did all the manic work. Great bass player he was. And yes the sound of that Precision was terrific.

I hear ya. :)
I was going to post this in the "Books" thread, but I'm just going to toss it in here. While searching for my copy of The Night Lives On, I came across this, which I've been impatient to read since about 1999. I've mentioned before that I kept most of my ocean liner books locked away from my kids, but I'm 'way overdue to read them now that I can safely leave them out in the open. I don't believe there were any psychic forewarnings, but George Behe is one of my favorite Titanic authors and I'm curious to hear his take.

I love this, Kathy! Thanks for posting it. It’s one of my favorite Beatles songs. Back in 1986 I heard Gloria Loring sing a modified version of it on Days of Our Lives. I thought, “Hey, I think that’s a Beatles song” but at that time Revolver represented a gap in my Beatles knowledge. It’s hard to imagine that I never heard it again until I bought the 2009 Revolver CD! I thought about it over those years though, and was so happy to hear it again that I almost wore out the repeat button!

Kelley, your timing is perfect! I really needed a laugh today. I hadn't seen that skit before; I haven't watched SNL since the 80s.
Paul's a good sport. I recall seeing another SNL clip with him and Chris Farley that was pretty funny, too. I'll have to dig it up.

I’m so glad you liked it, Kathy! When that aired back in 2012 I didn’t know Paul was going to be on. I just happened to turn it on at the right moment. I loved that choir then and now. They looked so excited to be there.

"That's Javier Parisi, a John Lennon impersonator from Argentina. He pretty much looks like the real John, doesn't he"
I imagine (pardon the pun) he gets a few stares when he goes out ;)

What a beautiful tribute. You can hear the emotion in Cave's voice. I had tears in my eyes listening.

It is touching.
There’s also this video of Glen Hansard (guitarist from the Commitments and star of the film Once) doing a great version of Fairytale of New York with a female singer I didn’t recognise. Toward the end Shane’s family get up and start dancing.

You beat me to it; I was just going to post that link! I see that someone in the YouTube comments said something along the lines of "If people are dancing at your funeral, you know you've done something right." :)
As someone of Irish ancestry who grew up listening to Irish music (Galway Bay, mentioned in Fairytale of New York, is a favorite) I felt particularly emotional watching the funeral coverage.
I did not recognize Glen Hansard from Once and The Commitments. Time to watch those two films again.
-
^^
I meant to say, Fairytale of New York was very touching, in a completely different way than Nick Cave's cover of Rainy Night In SoHo. Funny how that works, with an ebullient (sort of) song and a melancholic song both bringing tears to the eyes. (Well, to my eyes, at least.)
I wish I could have been there to celebrate Shane McGowan's life.

As long as they don’t continue on your grave ;D

You should. I can bore you with my theory that Once is a sequel to the Commitments. My evidence? One of the last scenes of the Commitments is the guitarist, Outspan Foster, and bass player busking in Dublin. The first scene of Once is Glen busking in Dublin about twenty years later. And in Once he’s never named. He’s just The Guy.
I rest my case.
-

Good point! ha2ha
I rest my case.
Sounds like a strong case. :) I hadn't picked up on that.

That was nice to see. It’s a very clever clip.
-
I found a short clip on YouTube of George being interviewed on what sounded like a European show from the look sometime in the 80s. She asked him about favourite guitarists. As well as his expected Django and Eric he said Eddie Van Halen is pretty hot. Which surprised me as George gave the impression he stopped listening to current music in about 1972.
But what got me is buried in the comments you find the “Beatles couldn’t play, they sucked live” crowd. And it struck me. These types see a random Beatle interview clip. Watch it. Then read the comments and then find some comment to reply to. It’s like a psychosis. If I see a video about an artist I don’t like, I just don’t watch it. I certainly don’t watch it and then reply to some fan in the thread saying that artist sucked. But I suppose I’m just not mentally ill.

Same! Kids today—in the States, at least—will never know the joys of playing outside all day in the summer until the streetlamps were on, drinking straight water from the hose, toasting marshmallows over hot coals in the deepening twilight, on an actual [natural] stick. (As soon as one of the neighbors started layering their briquets, we'd all start searching for a perfect marshmallow stick.) I spent almost my whole time on my bike (and later, on city buses as I skipped school. ;D ) I really miss those days.
