Title: What five things killed rock & roll?
Post by: Wayne L. on July 01, 2004, 07:32:51 PM
1.  MTV....80's up to the present.
2.  Rap....what rock meant in the 60's/70's to the young is what rap is now.
3. Nirvana.....killed 80's rock from Motley Crue, Bon Jovi & Ratt with a useless rock star & so called music genius Kurt Cobain
4.  Madonna....she put the M in MTV with her music videos along with trying to cause so called controversy while her music is secondary & being a mediocre singer, actress & performer.
5.  Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake(manufactured artists)

You say MTV killed music in the 80's but then say Nirvana killed it in the 90's. Huh? Anyway, Nirvana resurrected it from it's hairy abyss! All hail Kurt Cobain. ;)

Rock isn't dead....just look at the thriving indie scene and the great music coming out...it's just that the good rock isn't in the mainstream, so you won't casually notice it.

www.pitchforkmedia.com That site will show you that it's still in existence.

I agree with Rowdy, rock isn't dead. You don't need to wait for the media to feed you with a spoon, there are a lot of good rock bands out there.

I'll tell you what killed rock and roll.  VAN-FREAKIN-HALEN!!!!!  One of the worst things to happen to the music scene.

There's still some good bands.  Oasis is one of the best bands ever, and they're still goin.  Although I think if the Gallagher brothers can't pull their sh*t together then they won't be around for much longer.  Pearl Jam is also a great band.  It's not dead yet.  Maybe there will be a revival before too long.

but there are new bands that rock as well. Take Velvet Revolver for example, they are an excellent hard rock band. Their debut album Contraband is amazing and it's on my CD player all the time.

Audioslave is another excellent supergroup

Chris Cornell was in another supergroup called Temple of the Dog.....the album went unnoticed until two years later when Soundgarden and Pearl Jam exploded onto the scene. "Hunger Strike" actually has Eddie Vedder doing co-vocals, became a big hit, etc...love the album.
Title: Re: What five things killed rock & roll?
Post by: strutter84 on July 04, 2004, 06:03:35 AM
Oh yeah, I like Audioslave too.  Chris Cornell has one of the most amazing voices in pop music history.  The thing about Audioslave is that all their songs sound like stripper music, but they still rock so hard that you don't really notice.

And I'm also vaguely familiar with Temple of the Dog.  I still prefer Oasis and Pearl Jam over any other bands today.  Here's to hoping Oasis puts out another album within a year! *crossing fingers*

I'm a humongous Pearl Jam fan myself, strutter, although Riot Act was disappointing and they could've selected better songs for half of Lost Dogs.....they're still one of the best live acts in the world though, and I hope to finally see them on their next tour.

Oh man, I love Riot Act!  I think it's one of their best albums for sure.  It's pretty diverse and has so much great stuff on it.  I particularly like "Love Boat Captain" and "1/2 Full".  I also liked Lost Dogs.
Title: Re: What five things killed rock & roll?
Post by: Rowdy on July 04, 2004, 05:49:12 PM
I thought Riot Act was great at first....but after a while I got sick of it, it didn't hold up like Binaural.....I Am Mine is memorable and I just LOVE "Green Disease" but the rest didn't hold well with me (although I find "Arc" rather creative)...

Lost Dogs had some great stuff....granted, I'd heard most of it before, which is kind of why I was disappointed....the two tracks on the Merkinball EP, Breath, State of Love and Trust, where was all that stuff? There's still about a disc worth of great stuff though (including classics like "Last Kiss" and my favorite PJ song, "Yellow Ledbetter"), but the only previously unreleased track that I really love is "Undone".

Guys! I'm 14 and I and a lot of my friends have much better musical taste than other people from my school...

I've only really recently been getting into great bands - my knowledge is limited, but I am ever learning.

ACDC, The Animals, The Beatles, Ben Harper, Black Sabbath, Cream, Dave Brubeck, Donavon Frankenreiter, The Doors, Eric Clapton, Eurythmics, Guns N' Roses, INXS, Jack Johnson, Jet, Jethro Tull, Joe Satriani, John Butler Trio, John Lennon, John Mayall, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Midnight Oil, Nirvana, Pete Murray, Pink Floyd, Powderfinger, Rage Against The Machine, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, Traveling Wilburys, Van Halen, Velvet Revolver, The Waifs, The Who, ZZ Top

(that's my current listening list...)

I think that Metallica, Powderfinger, and Velvet Revolver really cut it as new bands. John Butler Trio is a really great blues band - definitely worth a listen.

Jet are okay, but I think they rip off all the other bands WAY too much.

By the way, I'm from Australia :)

Love your posts so far broady, such enthusiasm. You're definitely listening to some quality/classic stuff.....I really think you'll dig U2 if you can get a hold of some of their stuff.....lots of Beatles fans love U2 to death and vice versa...

Thanks guys.

I dont really like U2 at all

I lean more to the Metal side of rock with the added ballads - hence Metallica.

What killed rock

1.  Business (Record Companies, RIAA, Money, Greed, Commercialism, Sell-outs)

2.  Boy Bands and Teen sluts (basically, "artists" willing to give in to #1)

3.  Drugs (as much as they helped musical creativity, their destructive effect cannot be ignored, think of all the brilliant people who we lost before their prime)

4.  MP3 (good way to store music, but in my eyes it is the beginning of the end of the Album as an art form)

5.  Wal-Mart/Best Buy (The record store is a beautiful place, but becoming much more rare.  I have to drive 60 miles just to buy any LP's)

...hm. I'd say "drugs!", but then again...that's a two way street in rock. Drugs've really fscked up in the end, but they've helped to get people creating bloody amazing stuff. Yeah.

Mark David Chapman, definately. It's like, he killed John and in turn, that killed a part of music from 1981 onward, y'know. MTV, the prefabricated stars, rap, some REALLY crap music that apparently, people liked...that all really started to like, file in or something.

And it's really, really sad that a song that was basically a pretty-boy sayin' "yeah" with a few backup singers,  the same, dull bassline a computerized drum...thingy..., and a short few lines of actual lyrics was #1 for 19 weeks. Incredibly sad. Sucks that this is part of what my generation'll be remembered for. =\

Even though I'm very much anti-drugs, it can't be denied that a lot of great rock music has been created under the influence of drugs... And what better way to become a rock legend than to die an early drug-related death?

This is true, but the point I was trying to make was that drugs also took so many good ones from us. Janice, Jimi, Moon, Bonham, Morrison, etc,,,,,,

That is true, but on the other hand: those people maybe wouldn't have been half as legendary if they didn't die a very early, tragic death...

Why is Lennon more popular than McCartney? Because he died young. Everyone remembers him as a handsome <40 year old guy. When you say McCartney, more people think of a 60+ year old man.

Same thing with James Dean and Marlon Brandon. James Dean is still known as one of the sexiest men in Hollywood history. Marlon Brando is to most people the ugly fat guy from The Godfather.

What killed rock'n'roll was not an artist or fad.  What killed it was the audience's willingness to be dictated to--buy it as a product, like any other product.  When music became a product then it died.  Or dies.

Maybe rock'n'roll is not dead at all, but is coming back to life via the internet.  Where you don't need the filter of A&R men or company promotion.  Or the push of the almighty dollar.  But it takes an audience willing to get out there and find the new acts.  Spread the word.  Change things.  Change yourself.

Just like the attitudes of the posts of some of these forums.  I posted a thread a couple weeks ago about a friend of mine who wrote a song about the Beatles Sgt. Pepper cover in the "News" section and you would have thought that I committed heresy.  (I had written a press release for the song that got wide distribution and was picked up by a number of online music news sources including several Beatles news site).  I don't care if you like the song or the press release (which was kinda a joke), or that News wasn't the right place to post or whatever.  But I think the idea of "The Beatles" was not about creating some shrink-wrapped plastic icon to be fetishized and worshiped.  Lennon obviously hated that idea.  The idea of the Beatles was, to quote Ezra Pound, to "make it new."

I appreciate the idea behind this topic, but way back in the 50s the Beatles themselves were not debating who was greater or if Pat Boone or Patti Page had killled rock.  They were getting into obscure stuff like Barrett Strong or "underground" black music.

Real music has always been "underground"--it has to be, because of its power.  And big companies can concoct monstrosities like "Big and Rich" in order to sell Chevies, but to find the real stuff you've got to be willing to go underground.

And once you go underground you'll find that maybe it's not dead at all.

i do agree that rock and roll is dead, and doa gree with most of what Wayne L. said. However, I personally like Nirvana and think they actually saved rock and roll for awhile.

Also, Audioslave is not that great of a band, but I do like Soundgarden. Chris Cornell-what a vocice.

"I'll tell you what killed rock and roll.  VAN-FREAKIN-HALEN!!!!!  One of the worst things to happen to the music scene."  As for strutter84, i think most will agree that van halen is a great band. Although, their gary sharone period was pretty bad.

I don't think manufactured bands are killing rock, thet've been with us forever. remember the Monkees? One of the biggest selling singles of the 60's was by a cartoon.(The Archies). Both the Stones and Beatles changed their images to suit the market and dropped long standing members who no longer looked the part.  . All those BIG Chin and Chapman bands in the seventies........
It's only rock and roll (but I like it).....

I've never really thought that the singles charts reflect what most people listen to. Remember Engelbert humperdink having the biggest number one in the so-called summer of love. "What's the matter you" keeping Ultravox and Vienna from number one?
Who the hell buys singles anyway? Most people "into" music buy albums - that's probably a better indication of what's out there.
Just remember your Dad saying "how can you listen to that trash. Now in my day......"

I saw Noel in a pub in Hampstead about a month ago - and I'm pleased to report he was dressed as if about to go on stage, so it's cool to know his image is "real". I've always admired them for their honesty "we're great and know it" very refreshing in this day and age.
Tho I'm a bit suspect about their big arguements everytime they try and tour the US. Gets them in the papers, that's for sure. But maybe I'm being unkind.
They're the best Beatles tribute band I've heard.
