The Question for John Lennon's 71st Birthday: Did Yoko Ono Really Break Up the Beatles ?

In the annals of American pop music, no human being is more passionately hated by critics and fans alike than Yoko Ono, wife of the late Beatles John Lennon. More than 40 years after the band's break-up, she continues to draw the kind of venomous and hateful reactions usually reserved for child molesters and baby killers. She is reviled as the slithering, calculating harpy who insinuated herself into the life of John Lennon, driving a wedge that finally severed one of music's most productive and brilliant songwriting teams -- Paul McCartney and John Lennon -- and precipitated the break-up of the world's most beloved rock band, The Beatles.

A Conversation With Yoko Ono

The artist and activist talks with Patch about music, art and an exhibit of John Lennon's art that's coming to Princeton. When asked if John Lennon scheduled time to work on his drawings and artwork, Yoko Ono is quick to say no. " He was not a scheduled person,” Ono says. Rather than specifying a time to draw, the music legend would start creating whenever he felt like it, she says.“It was great that he had this talent of doing artwork because when we were in a conference with all the lawyers, and maybe 20 lawyers together, it’s so boring,” she says. “And he would just start to do drawing. He would never sort of waste any time, he was like that.”

“Gimme Some Truth — The Artwork of John Lennon “is on view at 19 Hulfish St. (next to Kitchen Kapers) in Palmer Square, Princeton, Sept. 16-18. Hours are: Sept. 16, 5-9 p.m., Sept. 17, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sept. 18, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For information, call 609-406-0503 or visit  MercerStreetFriends.org.

Yoko Ono: Play it by Trust

Yoko Ono’s Play it by Trust (1966/2011) is an all-white, interactive chessboard that functions as a metaphor for the futility of war and extends the artist’s interest in the expressive potential of chance.  By eliminating the color-based opposition of one side versus another, Ono dooms any attempt to successfully “play” the game beyond a series of initial moves to ultimate failure.  She thus encourages us to consider the aspects of humanity that unite rather than divide.   Play it by Trust joins the many conceptual, musical, and performative works that Ono has created for over 40 years that evoke her dedication to the promotion of peace in our society.   It was first exhibited in 1966 at the Indica Gallery in London and since then it has been re-presented in various sizes and for numerous different occasions.  This presentation of Play it by Trust has been developed in cooperation with the opening of the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis this fall.

Yoko Ono on Lady Gaga: 'She is Incredible'

The 78-year-old artist, who recently charted her eighth no. 1 dance single, marvels at pop's reigning queen and her own crossover success.Yoko Ono may be known for many things (chief among them: being the love of the late John Lennon's life), but one wouldn’t expect chart-topping dance artist to be one of them. As it turns out, nobody is more surprised than Ono herself.“Isn’t that amazing?” says the 78-year-old Ono. “I can’t believe it.  But it’s a good song.”Ono is referring to “Talking to the Universe,” which takes the top spot on the Billboard Dance Club Play singles chart this week. The track is her seventh consecutive No. 1 dance single and her ninth overall, and Ono is giving credit to the team of producers and DJs (Ralphi Rosario, Chris The Greek, Tony Marinos and The Perry Twins) who remixed the song to dance floor perfection.

Trentonian exclusive: Yoko Ono opens up about life, as late hubby Lennon's artwork comes to Princeton this weekend

Yoko Ono has become iconic in her own right. From dance clubs to the lounge chairs of Baby Boomers, her name is known in every country of the world I spoke withthe legendary 78 year-old proponent of peace and love just prior to the opening of an exhibit of her late husband John Lennon’s art work in Princeton. Each day, she goes about her business of sharing her philosophies and John Lennon’s messages. Talking with her is like meeting your best friend’s best friend for the first time: only briefly unfamiliar. In Yoko Ono’s office in New York City, callers on hold listen to her singing from a cut on her own album. Her voice is small but imperative with lessons she wants to offer. It is at once recognizably a musically educated voice.
