It's easy for me to pick out John's masterpiece, that would be A Day in the Life. But for Paul I don't know. Let it Be has been my favorite song since I was six, so I think I'd go with that. Any thoughts? What did I leave out?????
-
The Long and Winding Road.
Even though pretty much everyone else seems to hate it, that's my favorite one by Paul.
Closely followed by For No One, Let It Be, Michelle and Here, There & Everywhere.

I think that if there would have to be one song that's generally considered to be Paul's masterpiece, it'd either have to be Yesterday or Let It Be...
-
For No One, easily his best. in fact, the best beatles song, imho.
-
Yesterday
Hey Jude
Eleanor Rigby
Let It Be
Helter Skelter
Golden Slumbers
Get Back
-
'Long & Winding Road' for sentimental reasons. Pretty ambitious, if not impossible task you picked Sandra. Tough to narrow it down to just a handful of songs, but I thought you did a good job.
-
I voted Let It Be, Hey Jude & Yesterday close seconds
-
Yesterday is his official masterpiece, but For No One is an underrated classic.
-
Out of that list,,,,Eleanor Rigby and Let It Be. Hey Jude would be next for me on that list and I love the song, but its not a masterpiece in my opinion. The remainder of the songs just keep dropping down the list.
-

I agree about The Long & Winding Road, its a great piece of Mccartney writing.
I would have to say Eleanor Rigby, just for the mood is gets across, its a flawless song.
-
An amazing strings arrangement from the incredible George MArtin makes that a top contendor. ;) (Eleanor Rigby)
-
For No One has a great melody, and (unusually for Paul) a great set of lyrics. John was always on fire lyrics-wise, and in that period so was Paul (66-68), and George was on the rise. They are the factors that make Revolver so brilliant.
For No One, with E Rigby, P Lane, F on the Hill, and Jude as runners up.
-
My favorite is Hey Jude, but Yesterday is probably his masterpiece.
-
i picked Helter Skelter. It's just a rocking song.
i never quite understood why Eleanor Rigby was so popular. I always disliked it for some reason.
-
Hey Jude is his masterpiece, that is perfect songcrafting.
Sandra, I'm interested to see that you view A Day in the Life as Johns masterpiece. What made the song so brilliant was the collaboration of Paul. His bit, and the bridges between it (courtesy of George Martin), as well as the "I'd love to turn you on" lyric, are what make it a great song. I definately wouldnt call this a John song. In my opinion, Strawberry Fields Forever is his masterpiece. Pure John, pure brilliance.
-
Hmm... Let It Be is my favorite Beatle song of all time, but I gotta pick Hey Jude for its awesome crowd-uniting features and incredible anthem.
Sorry LIB :'(

-
In My Life is another real John masterpiece
-
Yeah, I love it. Very moving. And he was so young at the time. Come Together ain't bad either.
-
As a masterpiece? I dont think so. As a kickass groove, hells yeah.
-
Well okay. But it's a cool freaking song. One of the best.
-
ever listen to it on headphones while walking anywhere, you cant help but groove withh it.
-
LIke that Ellen Degeneres commercial.
-
let it be closely followed by hey jude
tough call
-
I chose Yesterday...the msot covered song ever! (according to Guiness Book Of World Records)
-
Hey Jude....I think Helter Skelter is a hard rock gem which gets overlooked during his Beatles days while Yesterday is overrated.
-
Yeah. What Wayne said!
-
There's a sentence I never thought I'd hear.
-
Heh, he's actually kinda been making sense lately! I think. ;D
-
this is why i love paul he has so many amazing songs that its so hard to pick the best one...
oh ya Yesterday :)
-
ARGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH! I can't decide. They're all great!
-
Heh, he's actually kinda been making sense lately! I think. ;D
The only one not making sense claiming to be a Beatles fan is YOU baby.
-
I choose Hey Jude out of the above, because I just think it's a sort of perfection. But I love them all.
Also, I want to give a shotuout to FOOL ON THE HILL, because I think that should be up there. Seriously. What a great song.
~ missy
EDIT: What about Maybe I'm Amazed? Does that count??
-
That is a tough choice, but just for music relevancy I choose Yesterday.
-
Hey Jude, don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better....
Class. Pure Class.
Anyone can relate to those lyrics, I feel that Hey Jude is a gift from Paul to everyone who's having troubles in their life, it's a very personal song between Paul and the person who is recieving it. It just beats Let It Be by a touch, for me Let It Be is a song to mourn by, Hey Jude has a very optimistic stance.
-
The only one not making sense claiming to be a Beatles fan is YOU baby.
Gee thanks Wayne. Stupid me for thinking you're a decent human being. What the hell am I NOT making sense about anyway???? Please set me straight with your great Beatle wisdom.
-
And WTF do you mean 'claiming' to be a Beatles fan??? I've been a f-ing fan since I was 6 years old. Just because I don't obsess about every freaking little thing doesn't make me any less of a fan. You should choose your words more carefully. At least I try and discuss things and find out more. I don't claim to be a Beatles expert. I'm only trying to talk to other Beatles fans to expand my knowledge and interest. It's people like you that make me want to stay away from this forum.
-
Here,There, and Everywhere is my favorite Paul song. It's simple,it's gorgeous,it's perfect. I can't hear it without thinking of when I felt like that. It's very emotional.
-
Yeah, it's a great one. One of the albums I had as a kid was the Beatles Love Songs and I played that one A LOT!! Along with She's Leaving Home, Long and Winding Road, In My Life, Something, and Here Comes the Sun. That was a great album now that I think of it. Wonder why they don't have it on CD.
-
Eleanor Rigby...of the ones listed. That song has more emotion than anything he ever did imo. It darn near brings a tear to my eye whenever I hear it. Just don't tell anyone though.
-
I vote And I Love Her
-
Hey Jude for me, hands down. It's probably my favourite song, ever. It's great lyrically, melodically, the recorded version is amazing [The orchestra totally adds to it -- at about 3:40, 3:50 where the louder part comes in ... man. Musical orgasm if ever there was one.] the unity of the song . . . I mean, WHO else could write a song that goes "na na na" for around FIVE MINUTES like that and it'd still be beautiful and enjoyable? Paul. Friggin'. McCartney. <3 Much love.
Let It Be is, IMO, an incredibly close second. But it couldn't surpass Hey Jude. Yesterday is a great song, but... I dunno. It can't even touch Hey Jude, man.
-
I have to go with Let It Be. Hey Jude and Yesterday are close behind.
-
eleanor rigby....the most haunting piece of music...
-
Hey Jude. The nanana's, the harmony, the 7 minute length... What a perfect song. So lovely, so nice, so unique...
Hands down, for me, at least. I mean, I do love Yesterday, Get Back, Eleanor Rigby and all his other songs, but I personally believe that Hey Jude was the peak of his talent expressed.
-
I always wondered why Paul was screaming during "Golden Slumbers" if it's supposed to be a lullaby?
Great vocals though. Some of Paul's best. He really hit his stride as a vocalist on "Abbey Road" (Oh Darling, etc.)--it's funny how his singing just wasn't as strong on his solo recordings. Maybe having George Martin in the booth to get another take has something to do with it?
Of the songs listed I think "Let it Be" strikes into something very primal, universal and mystical--even more than "Hey Jude" or "Yesterday." Simple lyrics, but each word absolutely essential.
-
Wow, didn't think Hey Jude would be in the lead. I like Let It B e better than that one.
-
Helter Skelter is there on the list but neither Here There and Everywhere or For No One.(thinker)
-
Let It Be, I also love George's solo in it. I think there is three versions of the song, I've only heard two of them.
-
YNGMYM
-
considering the effort he put into the whole get back project i would say get back since he probally wrote let it be to make the project seem like it was going great...he was desperate to make the get back project a success...john told george martin he didn't need to use tricks on it because they wanted it natural and unedited...but i guess that went south....i am also saddened that it was changed to the let it be project instead of the get back project...the effort he was mustering up was unreal...the non effort john used is my biggest grievence against lennon the humanitarian...that was the most non professional thing he ever did during the beatles stint....paul lording around probally was depressing tho....

Sure, point well said. ;)
-
I'm outraged where is the Tempoary Secretary option.
-
^ I hope you're joking.
I voted for "Let It Be"--brilliant song.
-
I'm happy this thread was revived. I voted for Yesterday.
-
no way is hey jude better than let it be.........
-
^There is TOO a way! Haha. My five-year-old self came out. =)
But I voted Yesterday.
-
I voted for Hey Jude, just because of the timeless classic it is and the fact that everyone loves it, Beatle fan or not. I do love Golden Slumbers though. I actually never really was too excited about Yesterday. I almost think it's too simple. I don't know, just not my favorite.
-
I went for Yesterday. It's just a song that was timeless as soon as it was written. Hey Jude wins Best Song To Get Everyone In The Whole Bar Singing Along With You.
-
you never give me youre money, golden slumbers, Marth my dear, Got to get you into my life.
-
I think "Hey Jude" is his best song. A great melody as usual and probably the best lyrics Paul ever wrote. Even John said that it was his best song.
-
Was it John or George that referred to Eleanor Rigby as Paul's baby in the anthology?
-
Hey Jude, I think, changed pop songs for years, until the long outro thing ran its course, with Southern Rock bands boring everyone to death.
I think Let It Be would be my pick. Don't know why; it just moves me.
-
Changed my mind. Was listening to Hey Jude on the plane today. That's the one. Or one of the ones. ;-)
-
love them all, but'golden slumbers/carry that weight'is really great for what it was saying in that particular beatles period.paul knowing that the beatles were coming to a sad end,and penning a song that said they were all going to carry the weight of being a beatle 'a long time'.indeed it still rings true-all 4 of them will carry the weight for ever.pure genius.
-
No Paul song I sing to a crowd ever has a better impact and people joining in than Hey Jude, although I personally prefer many of his others, this is a safe 'master-piece' bet.
-
I voted for Hey Jude, but Blackbird needs a mention.
-
Paul's masterpiece?
maybe 'you never give me your money"
-
What were the choices?
-
if we talk about masterpiece, I would have to say
Let It Be
The Long and Winding Road
Hey Jude
Eleanor Rigby
She Leaving Home
Here, There and Everywhere
Yesterday
and every song he wrote for Abbey Road
-
I can not decide between black birds and yesterday, but of course there's the song Golden Slumbers it amazing!
But there is also the Hey Jude and the The Long and Winding Road and the Eleanor Rigby and the She Leaving Home
And the
Here, There and Everywhere
And much more ... (including Let It Be ... ha ha .. all these years I thought lnnon wrote this song and singing!)
