Knighthood Petiton for Ringo

found this on the GH forum:

Euan Buchan says:

WHAT do you think Cliff Richard, Tom Jones and Bobby Charlton all have in common?

They have all had dodgy hit singles

It's tragic that Ringo has never been awarded a knighthood. That fact that he still only has the lowly MBE - an award they give to your local lollipop lady - is appalling. Ringo should have been awarded at the same time as Paul.

And while we're at it, how about a postumous award for George? (I'm assuming that John wouldn't accept!!)

"In December 2006, Times columnist Daniel Finkelstein [started a campaign] to get Ringo Starr knighted in a petition to the Prime Minister.Whilst it is in an attempt to test the recently introduced petitions section to the government website and admits its triviality, Finkelstein thinks "he [Starr] deserves it" and has set out ten "unanswerable" reasons as to why Ringo Starr should be knighted:

- The Beatles are not just another pop group they changed popular culture.
- Ringo has an MBE. Tom Jones has a knighthood.
- The Beatles are a symbol of this country's creativity that is recognised in every part of the globe.
- Ringo has an MBE. Cliff Richard has a knighthood.
- Have you heard the drumming on Abbey Road?
- Ringo has an MBE. Errol Brown of Hot Chocolate has an MBE.
- Before Ringo joined the Beatles they were nothing.
- Ringo has an MBE. Gerry Marsden of Gerry and the Pacemakers has an MBE.
- Have you seen Help?
- Ringo has an MBE. Jeffrey Archer has a peerage.

The petition has been met with widespread press coverage from the Sun and the Canada National Post and has received several hundred signatures."

Poor Britain!  Still hobbling along with an outdated feudal system of social class distinction.  Keith was right to tell Mick that a Rolling Stone shouldn't be a knight!

Ringo doesn't need to be one either.

Why doesn't Britain scrap the whole monarchy while they're at it?  It's pathetic.

Reminds me what one British poet had to say way back in 1819--although the spring's still muddy:

An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying king,--
Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow
Through public scorn,--mud from a muddy spring,--
Rulers who neither see, nor feel, nor know,
But leech-like to their fainting country cling,
Till they drop, blind in blood, without a blow,--
A people starved and stabbed in the untilled field,--
An army, which liberticide and prey
Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield,--
Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;
Religion Christless, Godless--a book sealed;
A Senate,--Time's worst statute, unrepealed,--
Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may
Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day.

Ringo couldn't give a sh*t about the Royals or a Knighthood.

I don't think Ringo's bothered about a knighthood.
I would be pleased if he did have one because he's a very underated
musician & drummer.

just imagine - Sir Ringo Starr!

Sounds like you can buy a Knighthood if you give the right donation to the right party.

I like the tabloids act so appalled at this news--as if it hadn't gone on for centuries--the monarchy filling its coffers with plutocract money.  Remember Lord Beaverbrook?  Son of a Presbyterian minister in Canada.  And should we even get into "Lord" Conrad Black?

Once again Ringo has been overlooked. The Queen's honours list this time. Why Joe Cocker gets an OBE is beyond me. For what? One decent cover version and a bunch of soppy, syrupy balads for films!

After "Elizabeth Reigns" on 'RingoRama', I don't think he cares about being knighted. After all, what's the big deal?
