Title: favorite scenes from "A Hard Days Night"
Post by: Mean_Mr_Mustard on February 10, 2006, 05:48:03 AM
I just recently saw the move for the first time and I am wondering what everyones favorite scenes are.

Mine are as follows.

1. When the reporters are asking them questions and Paul answers every question "We are just friends" or something like that.

2. When John ask the old man on the train to "Give us a kiss" acting gay towards homophobic people is one of my favorite pastimes.

3. When John is playing with the submarine toy in the bathtub and he hums "Deustchland Uber Alles" and crashes the toys together. lol

Great movie, I loved it. I am in the process of watching Magical Mystery Tour.

Some of my favourites:

- When the guys are messing around in the field (With Can't Buy Me Love playing)

- The scene with Lennon and the random woman in the makeup corridor of the theatre
" What have you heard.."

-  When they find the old man in the cupboard at the hotel, and then the nightclub scene

- when Paul gets confused in explaining to the Casino owner who his grandad is.

I love it ... I see it every month, more or less ... lots of scenes to choose ...

The ones mentioned above ...

The one with Ringo at the police station ... and then John coming in sweating, asking for some time (very surrealist) ... they running again the same street in both directions chased by the policemen ... all in the best Chaplin style ... it's quite funny ... I've never known if they wanted to make that scene looks like a too evident homage but making clear that they were just amateur ... because the scene does not work but it's amazing how weird it is!

i love the scene where john convinces a female fan that he's not john lennon.

(just copied this from wikiquote)

Millie: [Gobsmacked, apparently recognising him] Hello!
    John: Hello.
Millie: Oh wait a minute, don't tell me who you are...
    John: No I'm not...
    Millie Oh, you are...
    John: I'm not.
Millie: Oh you are, I know you are...
    John:: I'm not, no.
Millie: You look just like him.
John: [Acting surprised] Do I? You're the first one that's said that, ever.
    Millie: Yes you do, look.
[She points John to a mirror, points a light-fitting over him]
John: No, my eyes are lighter, the nose...
Millie: Oh yes your nose is very...
    John: Is it?
Millie: I would have said so.
John: You know him better, though.
Millie: [Defensive] I do not. He's only a casual acquaintance.
    John: That's what you say.
    Millie: What have you heard?
John: [Leaning close, quietly] It's all over the place.
Millie: [Grinning shyly] Is it? Is it really?
John: But I wouldn't have it. I stuck up for you.
Millie: [Touched] I knew I could rely on you.
    John: [Humble] Thanks.
    [Millie puts on her glasses]
Millie: You know, you don't look like him at all.
[John pouts and walks up the stairs]
John: [Huffily] She looks more like him than I do.

Haha, hard for me to pick a favourite scene... I like pretty much the whole movie ;D
I really like the scenes on the train, and the fanmail scene, the bathtub scene... and also the scene where Ringo is going "parading", taking photos of milk bottles, and meeting Charlie, and helping that woman cross over puddles ;D

And the last move in that scene was John`s winking at the woman on the stairs that was lost in the dark, as one of the films about that film says.

I am in the process of watching Magical Mystery Tour.

Magical Mystery Tour is a great movie if you can open your mind to it. While I do not condone drug use, opening your mind to this movie usually requires LSD. Although, you can still enjoy the songs without it.

As far as my favorite AHDN scenes? Well, I have seen it prolly over a hundred times. In fact I just watched it Monday (I watched Help! last night actually) and I would say my favs are the whole train scenes, in particular John acting like he is handcuffed and saying "I bet you cant guess what I was in for hoohahaha!"

I also like the bathroom scene as well, John: "Ah, zie filthy Englanders, gutenmorgen" ... Shake: "Keep Britian Tidy"

The police station scene is good as well. With Grandad telling Ringo to beware of his brisket.

Georges "grotty" canteen scene is very good as well and one of my favs. "You dont see many of these nowadays do you?"

Other favorite scenes are:

"Give me a bottle of milk and a packet of oblivion. Oh, it's a plot, I see it now, it's all a plot."

"I bet you're a great swimmer. My turn? Bingo!"

" And what's it all come to in the end?"

"A book!"
"Yeah ... a bloomin' book!"

Yay, thanks for the quotes Hello Goodbye! ;D These are some of my favourite moments too :) Love the Ringo-and-Charlie scene (the dialogue, and how Ringo lets him play with the camera and all), and Grandfather playing "bingo" (two plus one carry on four... ;D ), and basically all the scenes with Victor Spinnetti's character (grin)

I love when the man says "You can be replaced!" and George says "I don't care!"

Also the scenes where Paul's grandfather keeps appearing on stage through the trap door.

I love the parts were Ringo goes Parading of course!
And when he first leaves the studio and he says "I'm going parading before it's too late" and then clicks his heals together.  ;D

And I like the can't buy me love field scene. The train scene when they are annoying the man, "Hey, mister can we have our ball back?" lol

There are so many good parts/lines in that movie!

oh ya and when George almost falls down during the song "If I Fell" it's too cute. He looks so surprised when he does it.

and of course the dancing scene really gets me every time!! I love seeing Ringo and George busting a move! They are so adorable dancing!!

Well, I love George and Ringo dancing! They are so adorable!

Another good one is on the train!!! They are soo cute when they are talking about Paul's grandfather and the other man!

I also love the Can't Buy Me Love song  :D

And when George is being asked to promote the shirts! I still use the word "Grotesque" because of that scene!

AND When George and John are in the bathroom! John is adorable in the tub! 8)

The scene with John singing Oh Brittania in the tub and George shaving the mirror is priceless!

Ringo is a really good dancer!

BreedofRandy, do you mean when George leans against that amplifier?  I felt so sorry for him!

The beginning credits George trips over the sidewalk, Ringo trips over George, and John laughs at them.

The scene where they're singing on the train for the girls, George keeps trying to sneak looks over at Pattie, it's so cute!  He looks so shy!

George is quietly flirtatious when he watches that receptionist put her shoes on, or when he's leaning in staring at that dancer's shoulder straps.

I still need to see Help all the way through, even if I have to just watch on youtube.

- The bathroom scene
- When George almost fall down the amplifier.

Jesus, I could go on FOREVER about the films, so I'll just do AHDN for now...  :p

When George literally faceplants the floor, and John looks back and laughs his head off.
Ringo:  "Well since he's your grandfather, who knows? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"
"Hey Mister, can we have our ball back?"  Especially when they're suddenly running alongside the train, Paul knocking on the window!
John:  "I bet you can't guess what I was in for!"
Paul's Grandad:  "Chicken sandwiches and cones of caviar...  disgusting."
George:  "Put your tongue away!  It looks disgusting, hanging out all pink and naked!"
And pretty much the entire bathroom scene.
Ringo's delayed laughing fit when asked how he likes his girlfriends to dress.
"I bet his wife doesn't know about her."  "He's probably not got a wife, look at his sweater!"  "She might have knitted it!"  "She's knitted him!"
George:  "Sorry we hurt your field, mister!"
Pretty much the entire George scene with the shirts, especially "I wouldn't be seen dead in them.  They're dead grotty!",  "Once we wrote these letters saying how gear she was, and all that rubbish"  and  "We turn the sound down on her and say rude things...  have I said something amiss?"
John:  "I now declare this bridge open!"
John:  "MY NAME'S BETTY!"

...and I'll shut up now before I quote the whole film!   ::)   :P

I love Paul's "ZAP! SHAZAM!" He's so cute.
When George gets his picture taken during the interviews.
George in the clothes place, "Grotty" is a word I frequently use now.  ha2ha
George shaving the mirror. The look of concentration on his face is simply adorable.
The 'Can't Buy Me Love' scene was classic.
And of course Ringo out parading.  ;D

The whole movie was great, and it's definitely one of my favorites - ever.

Obviously I need to watch the movie again because I don't remember that part!  :-[ Then again my brother and I have been on some weird non-stop Help! marathon for the last few days so AHDN has sort of been glossed over...

Nevertheless, I think my favorite part will always be the bathroom scene. John's German gibberish always has me falling on the floor, not to mention George's "safety razor."

Oh, and the "I now declare this bridge open," which was just unexpected enough to put me in stitches.

That movie is kind of John's movie, if you think about it.  :P

Got to love John's mucking about in general throughout this movie.

The scene introducing Paul's ~very clean~ grandfather is brilliant.

And Ringo getting riled up by the grandfather and going out on his own.

Not to sound snarky, but it's "bourgeois" clichés. :)

Also, just about every freaking scene in that movie is hilarious. I mostly like  all of Ringo's lines/scenes. :) But all the boys had such great lines/actions (like John writing "tits" on that pad of paper). That whole interview scene was brilliant.

Like someone else said, I just get a laugh every time I see Geroge fall and Ringo fall on top of him and John laughing his head off at them. They recovered quickly, though.
Edit: I also, for some reason, love when George is eating on the train. It's just so silly. Every once in a while he takes a bite and it's just "CRUNCH!"

lol ~ I actually love that too. There's something sassy about the way he's chomping on his sandwich (or "butty" or whatever those Scousers say). George is brilliant throughout the whole film... he completely cracks me up.

It's corny, but I love the scene when they run to the police station and the chase ensues. I know it's straight-up Keystone Cops, but I love it when they run back into the station to catch their breath and the sergeant asks John, "You all right now?" and John nods and then they all run out again. Pure surreal slapstick cuteness!

Haha totally. People think I'm crazy when I say it, but I really think they were all great actors. They just really seemed to know how to deliver a line! They didn't take it overboard or try to jazz it up. Even when they do it kind of dorky (I'm thinking when Ringo is making fun of Paul and says "Well ... if he's your grandfather, who knows?" and gives the DORKIEST fake laugh but I just think it works. :))

Top favorite part:When they're in the train and Paul's grandfathers sitting in the middle of John and Paul, here's the conversation:
John:Hello grandfather
Grandfather:Hello
John:So he can talk then, can he?
Paul:Of course he can talk he's a human being isn't he?
I absolutely love Paul's reply lol.
My second favorite part is when John and Paul are walking into the room in the train where Paul's grandfather and the women is and when Grandfather says "Congratulate me boys.I'm engaged!" then Paul says "Oh no you're not,not this time".
My final favorite is when John's in the tub lol.

Paul : Na klar kann der reden, der kann sogar Mamma sagen
Ringo: Nun sag bloss das er singen kann ,dann schrei ich aber laut.

According to The Beatles Bible:

Filming: A Hard Day's Night

3.01pm, Monday 23 March 1964 (47 years ago)

This was the first day of filming at the Scala Theatre in London, where the performance finale of A Hard Day's Night took place.

In all The Beatles were at the Scala for seven working days, until 31 March when the final performance in front of an audience took place.

The Scala Theatre was situated at 58 Charlotte Street in central London. It was closed and demolished in 1969 after being damaged by fire, and was later replaced by an office block and a cinema. Today the television station Channel 4 Television owns Scala House, which stands on theatre's former location.

Now let's see if we can find out when And I Love Her was filmed.

Beatleswiki says:
The song is featured in The Beatles' first film, A Hard Day's Night. They played it while "rehearsing" for a live concert at the end of the film. This sequence was taped on March 31, 1964 at the Scala Theatre in London.

According to the Lewisohn Chronicles book, on Tuesday 31 March they filmed the live performance segment at The Scala in front of an audience (including Phil Collins) which closes the film - And I Love Her wasn't part of that (even though Lewisohn says it was!). They played Tell Me Why, If I Fell, Should Have Known Better and She Loves You (plus You Can't Do That which was later cut).
The Beatles - A Hard Days Night (Movie) Part 8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdeTCI18o5w#)

The "rehearsal" clip (with no live audience) that Xosé asks about must have been filmed the previous week. As Xosé has already pointed out, Lewisohn gives the dates as between Monday 23rd March and Thursday 26th.

This is correct (=neither The Beatles Bible, nor the Beatleswiki. Sorry Bobber!!  >:( )

I also emailed Lewisohn. Unfortunately, he has not the details, but he will look for them...

Best!! ;)

the scene in the baggage car cage has always been a favorite.  Love when the girl reaches through and takes a swipe at Ringo.
