How Motown Broke The Ground!
« on: October 08, 2005, 11:54:19 PM »

I think that "Motown" was the definative voice for "black talent" prior to the 70s! They had it all going on with the ultra cool girl groups and guy singers! Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder! They had talent stacked to the roof at Motown!!! Radio was the big deal back then and all the stations in Detriot and Windsor played the "Motown Sound" If you can find a dvd or vhs called "standing in the shadows of Motown" buy it! A true History lesson of the music back then!!

I think you may be right. I love Motown- each song is like a perfectly crafted little gem.

I'm on a Motown hiatus. I loved the best known songs almost to death in childhood.

Lately, I can't hear them the same way any more, just too over saturated.

What appeals currently is what I knew least well before: those little bits of young Stevie I hadn't already lapped up, but primarily early Marvin Gaye (and duet partners) and Gladys Knight, Martha of the Vandellas, too.

I absolutely LOVE the really early Motown stuff like Please Mister Postman, Shop Around, Can I Get A Witness, Needle In A Haystack, Too Many Fish In The Sea, Heatwave, Do You Love Me... I could go on for ever!!!

I thought that in the mid-sixties Motown tracks started to sound very samey though. Still top notch tracks, but very formulaic.

And I never liked the Supremes - Diana Ross' vocals were too screechy for my liking!!!

Awww, I love the Supremes. But trust me, never try to sing along with them, though. Diana Ross' vocals are very hard to imitate. Quite immature, really.

I think The Supremes are soooo sexy. And they do it without having to be overt. They are just too cool.

Screechy? prehaps on an old lift up 45 player? She had one of the smoothest deleiverys going! Listen to Come See About Me, Stop In The Name Of Love, Baby Baby Where Did Your Love Go and so on the only screech was the tires on the "Motown
Muscle Cars"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love motown. To me, it's the real r and b. I especially like Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and The Temptations and The Supremes as well as The Four Tops. I grew up with  a lot of oldies music. I'm a huge fan of music from the 60's. :)
