Classic 60's songs: California Girls
« on: November 20, 2016, 07:16:53 PM »

"California Girls", one of the most enduring songs by the Beach Boys, was released as a single in July 1965. It was written by Brian Wilson with a little help from Mike Love. The single reached #3 in US, though it was a moderate hit in UK, where it peaked at #26. The song was probably the most complex production the band has made to that date. The intro sounds as something that could have been part of Pet Sounds, released the next year. The song itself represented the California sound, with the usual great vocal performance by the group. It was certainly an important step forward for the band.

Perhaps the most beautiful intro to a song ever!  Brian Wilson knew just how it was supposed to sound.  It took a while for his brother Carl and The Wrecking Crew to play it the way Brian heard it in his mind...

Twenty-two seconds of pure genius!  And forty-four takes to create it.

It seems that more effort was needed for the intro than for the rest of the song!

Recording sessions for the instrumentals went on for two months before the vocals were recorded.  I'm sure Brian Wilson was just as fussy with the verse, chorus and fade-out instrumentals too.

I think Brian Wilson set a new standard for a song intro with California Girls.

Rare Earth took the art of the intro to new levels a few years later...

Yes, "California Girls" marked a new path for song intros.

Other bands that made special efforts for song intros were the Byrds and the Rolling Stones.
