Classic 60's songs: Good Vibrations
« on: January 15, 2017, 10:42:57 PM »

"Good Vibrations" is generally regarded as the Beach Boys' greatest individual work. It was released as a single in October 1966; and it was the only song by the band reaching the highest chart position in both US (certified as a platinum record) and UK. The song was composed and produced by Brian Wilson; and words were contributed by Mike Love. The record was immediately acknowledged as a masterpiece by music critics; and as far as I know, it was the first multi-part hit. Indeed, it introduced a new conception of the pop song, being constructed from several fragments and including strange instrumentation and complex vocal arrangements. This was certainly an amazing prelude of the colorful sounds that were going to be heard the next year.

This was an impressive piece of work. It's not one I play a lot but always nice to hear it come on the radio.   Hard not to feel cheery listening to it. .

It's one of those songs it's hard to think of a similar style hit record. Maybe Uncle Albert and Bohemian Rhapsody would be the closest. This one tops them though in my opinion.

I don't throw the word masterpiece around very often, but this song is a pop masterpiece.  If anybody ever had a question about Brian Wilson's genius, here you are.

It's a great song with a lot going on. And the more I listen, the more I hear.

I'm not a big fan the Beach Boys but I love this one, whenever I hear it on the radio I have to really listen to it, I remember my big brother buying it when it came out.
Played it too death , so different to their poppy 12 bar surfing songs.

This song by Sagittarius was clearly influenced by "Good Vibrations". In fact, the song was produced by Gary Usher; and Glen Campbell, Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston were also involved.

I read that it has been called as "the best single the Beach Boys never made".

This song by Sagittarius was clearly influenced by "Good Vibrations".

Well, the song couldn't have been influenced by 'Good Vibrations', as the original version of 'My World Fell Down' by The Ivy League was released just four days after 'Good Vibrations'. :) But I agree that Sagittarius' arrangement is clearly influenced by 'Good Vibrations' and 'Smile', and that it might be the best song The Beach Boys never recorded (well, maybe apart from 'Stained Glass Window' by The Yellow Balloon).

A pretty unique thing about 'My World Fell Down' by Sagittarius: the long version with the crazy sound collage is the single version, the shorter version without it is the album version, although you'd probably think it should be the other way around.

Yes, I was referring to the recording more than the songwriting, but thanks for clarifying it!

And yes, that was a strange the decision to keep the sound collage in the single version and exclude it in the album version; usually the opposite was done.
