Classic 60's songs: Light My Fire
« on: February 19, 2017, 01:45:24 AM »

"Light My Fire" is the most famous hit by the Doors. The single was released in May 1967, climbing to #1 in US (certified as a gold record). In UK the song reached the #7 position 24 years later. As the band used to do at their beginnings, the composition was credited to the whole group; but it's widely known that Robby Krieger wrote the song. The recording is instantly recognized by the vibrant keyboard intro, played by Ray Manzarek. The presence of other catchy hooks plus Jim Morrison's particular voice also captured the attention of the public. The band produced several new hits afterwards, but this song served as the launching pad for their successful career.

Well, that's how it was heard on AM radio.  Ah, but on FM it went like this...

Recorded in 1966 and released on LP in early 1967, that's the way we first heard it, with the full keyboard and guitar solos.  The edited single version was a bore.

I enjoy the longer album version too. I guess that in early 1967 the Doors were not the Beatles, so they were not allowed to release a 7 min single. In fact, the Beatles did not release a 7 min single until August 1968.

It was just a question of getting the single played on the radio.

As for comparisons with the Beatles. Would George Martin have allowed the Beatles to put a seven minute song on their first album? I doubt it.

Yes, that's true, not to mention the even longer "The End". But we also know that in 1967 the minds of the rock music world had become more open than in 1963.

We had some pretty progressive stuff around even before that.

Yes, that was quite progressive in comparison to the standards of 1962. But you won't deny that the jump from 1963 to 1967 was enormous.

She looked like she was having fun even with all the liberties she took with song.  Her kit sounds great too.  Thanks for posting Barry.

You're welcome, Todd.  She's a good drummer.  John Densmore would be proud.

Light My Fire was typical fare of a lot of garage bands that played at parties when I was in college in the late 60s.  The better bands could go on for a half hour with lots of guitar, keyboard  and even drum improvisation.

Another band often saluted at those parties was The Chambers Brothers.  Time Has Come Today was another long song recorded in 1966 and edited to fit AM radio.  It made it into the Top 20 in late 1968 in a four minute version  I've always regarded it as a drum and percussion solo with guitar and vocal bits...

Several bars of The Little Drummer Boy at 5:40 in the LP version.

And some Eight Miles High at 4:30 in this live version.

The 60's were far out!    :)

I prefer the single version. I'm just not into long solos.

I agree. I like the song but the lengthy solo doesn't grab me.

I prefer the long version.  The Krieger solo is awesome.  The single version always sounded like a hatchet job to me.

I'm Australian and so I have a short attention span. Sit in one place too long and a snake, spider or crocodile will get you. We make an exception for five day cricket matches of course.
