I see the song has been co-opted by Gap for one of their ads. I'm not a fan of this. Then again, perhaps some Millenials or Gen Z-ers will take the initiative and track down the original.  :)

I agree with your hope anytime I hear Beatles in commercials now, like the Kohls one is running right now for the holidays with the grandchild stepping up to ask his grandmother to dance in the living room while all my loving plays (cover)

Oh, I haven't seen that one yet; I'll have to track it down.

For that same reason, I was happy to see Target's Hello Goodbuy commercial campaign...

2008

I remember these commercials generating a lot of talk on this forum amongst the young members at the time.

Air Canada used the song in their 1993 commercial campaign...

I just hope the younger members of the general public—that is, ones who weren't brought up by Beatles fans—really do track the originals down and don't simply think "Oh, that's a nice tune."

Wasn't the Beatles catalog still mired in copyright issues in 1993, as well as in 2007 and 2008, or did Michael Jackson release permission, if he still owned the copyright by the latter dates? I have to admit, I've completely lost track of the whole who-owns-the-copyright thing.

I think a lot of the songs released for ads was while Jackson held the copyrights. My understanding is Sony eventually got control of Jackson’s portion. And Paul has got some share back as well. Except Penny Lane. Apparently the Australian businessman,  Robert Holmes a Court, who sold the catalogue to Jackson,  gifted that to his daughter in 1985 which she still holds.

What a fantastic gift! Hm, that could almost be a thread: If you could hold the copyright to one Beatles song, which one would it be?  ;)

That can definitely be a thread!   :)

Go ahead and start it, Kathy.

Well I’ll just say my obvious choice would be Here Comes the Sun. It’s not only a great song but it’s by far the most streamed Beatle song. So count them dollars roll in.

so one song- does anyone know what royalties are like for that woman that has Penny Lane?  Here Comes the Sun- how much a year would you bring in?  Curious whether one song, even a gigantic Beatle song would translate to $$$.

My first instinct is to pick one of my current top3 songs, but as I think through it I also came up with maybe it is revolution 9 and find a way to prevent anyone from ever interacting with it again, but that wouldn't be pc given all the recent understanding and love for Yoko after Get Back.

Insanely interesting question, kind of a twist on the - you are allowed only one song (or album) on a deserted island question.

Back to the top3 favs I guess for me, it would either be Here Comes the Sun or Eleanor Rigby for me at the moment

I was thinking of this more along sentimental lines. . .

I’d probably make the same choice. Win win for me.

Streaming revenue for HCTS on Spotify alone to date would be around the $1.5 million mark.

^^^^^

You know, I automatically assumed that Yesterday would be the highest grossing Beatles song, but HCTS has 707 million streams on Spotify, whereas Yesterday has a paltry ( ha2ha ) 357 million.

I got those numbers from the following article, which identifies the most-streamed song from each Beatles album. (Good old Far Out magazine.  ;) ) There are some interesting tidbits in it, including that Her Majesty has the lowest streaming number, but I'm encouraged that it's being streamed at all. Which leads me to ponder the following question: Why has Apple (or whomever the decision maker would be) not required that Abbey Road (in particular) be downloaded only in its entirety? I read that Adele mandated this with her latest album. The medley for sure, in my opinion, should be listened to as a whole, and in its proper order. It seems to lose something when divided up among a playlist into discrete units, although they're all great songs, of course.

Anyway, time to get off the PC. Here's the link to the article:
