From a BBC News article:

Following the Beatles' breakup, Evans moved to California. He just couldn't cope with the transition. He was divorced and living with a girlfriend when in his depression he became upset and brandished a replica gun. She called some friends, and those friends informed the police. When the police came, due to the call, Evans flourished the replica weapon and the police shot him. He was cremated but his ashes were lost and have not been found to this day. When John heard the fate of his long time friend he supposedly stated, "That's just like Mal, ending up in the dead letter office."

I never knew this.  I came across it while reading Cyn's book "John."  Mal Evans was being abusive towards his wife/girlfriend (not sure which), she called the police, the police came, Mal was threatening to them, they shot him dead.

A little bit of Beatle history that wasn't discussed in "Anthology."

Mal died in 76, and Anthology winds up (obviously) in 70.
Quite a bit is missing from anthology. Little about Yoko, nothing about the Klein/Eastman thing, or The Long and Winding Road. Anthology is the view of The Beatles The Beatles want you to see.

Yeah, that was pretty sad, never knew the whole story, but I found this:

Evans was shot and killed by the police on 5 January 1976, in his rented duplex at 8122 W. 4th Street in Los Angeles. The officers mistakenly believed that the air pistol Evans was holding was a rifle. Before his death Evans was working on a book of memoirs called Living The Beatles' Legend, which he was supposed to deliver to publishers Grosset and Dunlap on 12 January 1976. Friends said that Evans was depressed about his separation from his wife Lil Evans

Evans' ashes were sent by post back to England, but were misplaced and lost in the postal system

Good grief - this story just gets more and more tragic!!!

Sounds like Hoernie has a lot to answer for!! Surely he knew it was an air-rifle if he saw close-hand!?

I  left this out but, John Lennon's wry comment when he heard the news was that Mal likely "wound up in the Dead Letter Department."

Does anyone know what month Mal's daughter Julie was born? Sometime in 1966.

Thank you!

Thanks again, Bill; I'll have to look for Mal in Help! But I wonder whatever happened to his book manuscript? It ought to be a fascinating read.  :)

Some information on Mals diary here: http://beatlesnumber9.com/mal.html
I was looking for a thread about it on here and I'm pretty sure it is somewhere, but I couldn't find.

Thanks, Bill. It's always great to read one of your articles. :)

Cor, that was the article I'd just read (the link above). So sad, but also very illuminating. Thanks for posting it-- I was going to add it. :)

I was curious about Mal's homelife. In 1966 they had all these tours, and after the tours ended he went on safari with Paul. I wondered when in all this chaos his little girl was born. Was he trying to squeeze homelife in among the busy events, or was Beatles first and foremost on every front?

Thanks for the link; I hadn't known there was a big mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Mal's manuscript- I'd just assumed it remained unpublished because someone had made a decision not to print it. The diary bits aren't bad, either; and the writer's unflattering contrast between Mal's and Pepys's efforts is a little wrongheaded because large sections of Pepys's diary include just the sort of daily minutiae Mal records here, and if you read between the lines, you'll notice interesting things going on.  :)

In the 2nd half of July 1963, The Beatles had the following agenda:

- 18: London, Abbey Road Studio 2. 7.00-10.45pm. Recording: `You Really Got A Hold On Me' (takes 1-11); `Money (That's What I Want)' (takes 1-7); `Devil In Her Heart' (takes 1-6); `Till There Was You' (takes 1-3)

- 19-20: Ritz Ballroom, Flintshire (North Wales)

- 21: Queen
