Burning a CD for a friend...
« on: August 06, 2005, 04:09:54 AM »

A friend who admits to have heard very little by The Beatles refuses to listen to me when I tell him there guitar driven blues was a huge influence on hard rock pioneers like Iron Butterfly and Led Zepplin. For the sake of both proving him wrong and as a gift because schools starting up for our ninth year of being friends (we met in kindergarten and were the first real friends either had) I am burning him some of their harder works. Here's what I've got:

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Rock And Roll Music
Twist And Shout
Taxman
Got To Get You Into My Life
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Money (Is What I Need)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band reprise

I admit to have never heard most of The White Album so I realize I am missing a huge piece of The Beatles hard rock repetoire'.

How about:

Ticket to Ride
Good Day Sunshine
Got to Get You Into My Life
Tomorrow Never Knows
Run For Your Life
I'm Looking Through You
The Word
I am the Walrus
Day Tripper (good one)
Don't Let Me Down
Hey Bulldog
Back in the USSR
Glass Onion
Why Don't We Do it in the Road?
Birthday
Me and My Monkey
Helter Skelter
Revolution
Honey Pie
I've Got a Feeling (cool one)
I Dig a Pony
Get Back
Come Together
Oh! Darling
Because
Sun King
Polythene Pam
Mean Mr. Mustard
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight

I don't know if some of these would fit. I just picked some that seem more guitar driven to me.

So mate, you babble on about the Beatles' music and you haven't heard "most" of the White Album?

Go away with your opinions until you know their music a bit better ...

Heh. Touche' but would you have preferred it if I were to lie? Its not as though I have dismissed it. I have been scrambling to find it. I guess its hard to appreciate just how hard it is to find Beatles music when you live in a redneck area where everyone's babbling about there damn country because they can't take a second to think about the lyrics to songs. And besides, may I ask, would you expect one be BORN with the knowledge of The White Album's merit? You would have to start somewhere. I'm sure you did...

Yeah, yeah, a great sob story. But you shouldn't start prattling on about all this "hard rock" nonsense until you - AT LEAST - have heard all their music. Hard to get or not, don't judge until all your evidence is in. That means, listen to all their stuff FIRST, then pass opinions.

Gods sake Ydoll...The guy is just assembling a CD for his mate. That's why he's posted here to maybe get some more idea's.

Why not use your infinite Beatle knowledge to guide the lad on his way?

Anderson...Listen to the Beatles at your own pace, discovery and enjoyment. ;)

There are some great blues to discover on the White Album. Have you tried d/loading or ordering from the internet?

Why would you say that to someone? People come to a forum to discuss and learn. You don't have to be an expert to post an opinion. Maybe he'd heard or read enough about them to come up with that conclusion. It wasn't as if he was forcing his opninon down our throats. So ignore the thread if you're so disgusted. At least he's starting topics that lead to some sort of discussion. He's a young fan just getting into them, you should be encouraging him instead of trying to chase him away.

It is hard to make a compilation, especially one that is supposed to have a certain theme or edge or whatever to it, if you don't know the music.  Its like trying to tell someone the cool neighborhoods or parts of New York when you've never been there.

Yeah, I know. I was quite concerned of that myself. Ofcourse, thats why I'm here.

I MAY be picking up The White Album today... MAY... I hope to god I am as I've searched through hell and high water to find it!

Sorry Appy, you got it wrong again. The guy is doing more than that. He pops up on this forum and starts saying ridiculous things (on another thread) such as that Abbey Road was the start of "hard rock". Here he is again, rabbitting on about "guitar-driven blues".

In my book, if you want to generalize about an artist and their work, you have to KNOW their work first.

To do otherwise is foolish and arrogant.

Well, read my reply to Appy.

In addition, I can't take you too seriously when YOU list Good Day Sunshine as guitar-driven! All I can say to that is: it ain't.

Yeah, I got a little carried away with my list. I just thought it had some sort of little blues type thing to it. Obviously I was not going for all guitar driven songs if I put Golden Slumbers on the list. Perhaps I should have said songs that seem guitar driven and bluesy to ME. Not that I really find a lot of bluesiness in Beatles songs. You could try to phrase things in a nicer way is all. But then that wouldn't be you and that would be sad.

Yes, but if you didn't tell them, they might not ever go and discover them on their own. You can't explain how it is, but you can give them a taste. I think you're right though. You can't make a compilation if you don't know the music. That's why he asking people that do to help him.

Right, but the poor guy has to have it and digest it and go from there. It would like me trying to put together a kick ass T-Rex compilation and I only know "Get It On".

Yeah, true. I'm still perplexed about the whole blues thing. I mean, I never thought of the Beatles as blues. I mean, Eric Clapton maybe, but the Beatles? They were more into that motown sound. Which kinda got far away from the blues stuff. But that's just me. Maybe I haven't listened to enough blues to really hear it much in their music.

the beatles were more bluesy back in the beginning i think......when they did things like clarabella, slow down, and a few others....they also had a rockabilly type country thing going on with things like be bop a lula, matchbox, picture of you,act naturally, and others.i think the blend of country and blues dominates alot of the pieces...of course paul is more country sounding on tunes than george but then georges best friends were perkins and clapton.country was were carl sprang from.he probally charted on country and rock charts but i don't put stock in charts....they are organized religion for idiots.no personal rainbow brite.....but back to the blues.i sort think authur alexander was kinda blues as were the coaster...remember there was no rock to influence the pre teen beatles....i think lonnie fired all their imaginations towards being in music, even ringos.but blues and country was strong b4 rock.
throw in some progressive jazz and you got rock and rolls recipe pretty much....it is funny that some of their idol eventually idolized them...
alvin lee plays dynamite blues...well i'm rambling...did i make any sense?????

The Beatles never did Blues, some peppy R&B stuff mixed with some Country-tinged music, but classic blues type stuff-never. Maybe '12 Bar Original' counts, but other that that, nada.

I see your point but do you not consider that there are many different ages and levels of Beatle awareness on these forums? Why be so damning? Is there not a better way to suggest he may have got it wrong than this?...'Yeah, yeah, a great sob story.'

That's all I'm tryin to say without trying to get in yet another of your 'Stoush's.'
