All Stars are great, But I feel sad when such sell-out commercial tragedy's like this actual materialise.
For me, this says nothing about John Lennon, except for the shameless capitalist organisations that manipulate Lennons Estate.

Well Yoko had no problem okaying it and even helped them. But there's more to it than just the sneaker and profit.  Anyway, here's the story on it I found.

Story Summary:

On the eve of the world's premiere athletic competition, Converse will
introduce the Chuck Taylor(R) All Star(R) Peace Collection, the visual
cornerstone for the brand's commitment to originality, artistry, unity and
world peace. The Peace Chuck Collection, featuring artwork by John Lennon, was
designed with the help of Yoko Ono.
In New York City's Times Square on Thursday, August 12, 2004, Converse
will encourage people to join together in celebration of the spirit of sport,
individuality and the basic human desire for world peace. Well-known music,
stage and screen artist, Mos Def, will join the Youth with a Purpose Choir
from Essex County, New Jersey, to perform John Lennon's "Imagine." Converse
will simultaneously distribute 10,000 white balloons in Times Square in a
modern day recreation of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's symbolic peace gesture
delivered 36 years ago at the inauguration of Lennon's, "You are Here"
exhibit.
Converse will address the importance of taking responsibility to build a
bond between people, breaking the cultural barriers that divide us, and
creating a world of understanding and peace. Converse also will announce its
commitment to world peace and its sponsorship of EmpowerPeace
(www.empowerpeace.com), which promotes cultural understanding through
education and dialogue. Converse will make a special announcement regarding
its longstanding commitment to supporting world peace endeavors through its
broader Chuck Taylor Peace Project efforts.

Creativity, self expression and cultural understanding are the values
shared by Converse, Mos Def, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and the millions of people
around the world who wear Chuck Taylor sneakers. To complement the Chuck
Taylor All Star Peace Collection, Converse welcomes artists from around the
world to submit artwork that embodies their personal vision of peace. To view
the gallery or submit artwork, visit www.converse.com/peace. Converse will
select one entry whose artwork will be featured in the Peace Chuck Collection.

BTW, if you click the link at the end of the story, open the Chuck Taylor peace site and click on the pic of John, they show a video of John and Yoko releasing balloons in Times Square (1968 ).

It's not weird....I'm glad Yoko made his name a trademark so that his images and name and such wouldn't ever be used out of context. Those shoes, however, are rather pricey, but I wouldn't mind owning a pair.

"In New York City's Times Square on Thursday, August 12, 2004, Converse
will encourage people to join together in celebration of the spirit of sport,
individuality and the basic human desire for world peace"

ok, after digesting that small piece of fictional writing, I realised that Converse were basically saying they are helping to strive for world peace. World Peace is as probable as  fully-working Communism! Such naive principles are obviously great to think about over a Drinking-toast, but using it to sell 'sneakers'? Lets not joke around, thinking Converse is the new political revolution in which the world will unite; love and peace being the comfortbale rules of life.
Ok, so im using ridiculous extremes, but nevertheless isnt World Peace a ridiculous notion?
When browsing through the cliche public* explanation, I couldnt help but realise the amount of times the word Converse* beamed past my eyes. Shameless, is the first adjective that I can think of, but I assure you it is not the last!

Reading on, I made a conscience effort to convince myself that me thinking Yoko Ono might have typed it could just be nonsense. Never have I read such pretentious-over blown statements which symbolised the basis of 'Marketing for dummies' :

"Creativity, self expression and cultural understanding are the values
shared by Converse, Mos Def, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and the millions of people
around the world who wear Chuck Taylor sneakers"

Buy a pair of Chucks, and your immediatly thrown into the sea of political rebelion, crashing with fellow new-wavers and all having a part of Lennon/Ono idealism.

...yeah right.

How can peace be fronted by a global money-making company such as Converse...(Im sure I heard Nike Bought them out) ..ok, so you need money for people to hear, but surely this just shows Yoko Ono to have lost the original vision of how to create World-Peace.
In a nutshell dear Yoko, it cant be done.

..over to the Primal Screams...

Ya know, I agree with IndicaWalrus, world peace is a great hope and all, but it's not possible. As humans we aren't able to be 100% peaceful, we all have emotions which stand in the way of achieving it. I love the sneakers and I'll buy a pair, but because I like the John artwork and the imagine lyric thing, not because they're putting up a good front, spouting meaninless garbage about their "fight for peace". I would have rather them put the shoes out without using all that crap about world peace. It seems like a spit in the eye to all the peace efforts of people that really want peace and aren't just using their efforts as a marketing campaign for shoes. I think Yoko's lost her way a bit with this, it's great for her to keep trying to put John's likeness out so that he is introduced to the new generation who may not know about him, but this isn't the way to go about it at all.

Well, John was always preaching peace and just getting the thought out there. Of course it's impossible, but I get what they were doing with all of their peace campaigns. He said something like being an advertiser for peace. That he didn't care if they came off looking like clowns as long as the message got out. I'm not quoting exact statements here, just paraphrasing. Anyway, I think what he did worked. I was talking to a parent at my school last month and he was saying just hearing his name makes you think about peace, love and so on. He was funny, he's even going to write a letter suggesting that John should be given the Nobel Peace Prize. Posthumously of course. Then we talked about Strawberry Fields in NY and how tons of people still gather there to sing and join together to pay tribute to John. Well, I think all of his and Yoko's little 'stunts' helped to promote this idea of peace and togetherness and that's why John's name invokes that feeling in people even to this day. He did all these little things that made his ideas sink into our heads. So if Yoko wants to put his name on a sneaker for peace I say more power to her. Whatever gets the word out. It certainly won't diminish him or his legacy.

Yeah, of course they're not meant to bring peace on earth and all that. But I do think it's a tiny little way of reminding people about it. That and getting the artwork out there. Anything of John's sort of comes with that feeling anyway.

Meh...they're alright. I wouldn't buy a pair though. I already have about eleven pairs of shoes. :D
