Title: Phobias
Post by: Joost on February 02, 2009, 08:03:26 AM
So, what are you really scared of?

Fish are my biggest phobia. I think they're the most disgusting creatures on earth. Seriously, if you want to freak me out you'd have a better shot with a goldfish than with a tarantula or a snake...

^  Do you eat fish, though?

I'm not crazy about some fish.  I don't think they're a phobia for me, but some look really disgusting.

I am afraid of...

Spiders/insects
The dark (if I'm all alone)
Ventriloquism dummies
Really violent/scary films
Shots, blood, doctors, needles...maybe anything medical-related.

I'm ok with most creatures i can pick up a Spider or Snake , not keen on Rats but it's more the vermin aspect with them rather than a Phobia .
I think Dolls maybe i've had nightmares were i'm been chased by Dolls , those one's with glass eyes that blink when you move them are spooky (afraid5) (crosseyed5)

Flies. They make me physically ill. I wouldn't say it was a full blown phobia, but it's pretty bad.

I also have no problem with snakes. I once had a friend who kept them. I had one on my lap and another around my shoulders, both fell asleep listening to Marillion!

I am scared of insects.
And lately I`ve found that I am scared of elevators, being stuck in them. About 3 weeks ago the elevator I was in got stuck. Though I stayed in it for only about 10 minutes and in a nice company (a very handsome guy happened to be there), I started to panic, it seemed there wasn`t enough air, and I felt I was about to die! It is really scary, those who had the experience are sure to confirm it.
And once the underground train had to stay in the tunnel for 20 minutes. It was awful, again seemed there was no air, impossible to bear the whole thing.

^ Scary yes, but is it a Phobia?

Phobia
"a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it."

I can understand your fear being stuck in an elevator, but do you now have an irrational fear of them? Does it, for instance, make you nauseous to think about them? I mean any elevator, not the time you were stuck in one.

I empathise with being stuck in a train tunnel. Once when there was a fire at South Kensington station my train was stuck in the tunnel for 3 1/2 hours. It was the kids that kept us all going! But I'm not scared of trains.

I have some family members with really weird phobias.

My mom has a phobia for buttons on clothes. She can't touch them. She once tried to explain it by saying that touching a button is like petting a beetle to her.

My brother has this weird thing that if he doesn't like a certain kind of food, he can't even stand to have that food within his sight. If you want to put a slice of cheese on your bread for instance, you've got to keep it out of his sight or he'll just walk away.

I have an uncle who is so extremely claustrofobic that he can't sleep next to a wall.

i have only one REAL phobia, and its a rather strange phobia, at least i think it can be considered a phobia. it's of.........logs, and similar things that are underwater.....i dont even think i've ever had a bad experience with them, i just CANT go near them, i close my eyes underwater in strange places, so i cant see whether or not theres anything there, i wont put my feet down in a lake or pond unless i can see the bottom, and once i refused to get out of the boat when the rest of my family went lure hunting on some underwater logs, and several more examples of the like......*shudders*

i doubt theres a name for my phobia...

I have so many.  Nne of the worst one is birds though. I am terrified of birds.  I have trouble even going in someones home if they own one.

Here are others:

bugs of any kind, including lady bugs
spiders
reptiles
snakes
fish (even fish that is dead or has been cooked, I cannot touch it). I won't go in water that I can't see the bottom.
rodents (rats/mice/squirrels)
turtles

These are all things that if they come near me, I will literally shake with fear and if they get too close, I will cry and start to panic, to a point where I can get a panic attack.

I know that most of these fears are irrational, but that doesn't help me.  I am so terrified.  It's kind of sad, I mean if there is a spider in our home and no one is there, I will freak out and call someone over to kill it.  I will watch it and cry and wait until someone can get there.  I won't take my eyes off of it because I am afraid it will crawl away and then I won't know where it went.

I am obsessed with the fact that there are Lana fishes (fishes that eat Lanas- Lana being my name). It's not a phobia, but I wont go into the sea (mainly becuase of the animals in it, and cold temperature) if I had the choice.

As Geoff said, "feet belong on the ground", I think the human body belongs on the dry side of the planet, and not the sea.

I have a fear of heights. It runs in the family. I'm not as bad as my mom and aunts though. If I'm protected by a railing or fence, I'm fine. Rock climbing though, no way! I went a couple of times and just started shaking. I guess it's this one then: Aeroacrophobia- Fear of open high places. I've also developed a fear of flying. I used to LOVE it but I don't know what happened. Now I can barely take it. But I'll still do it. Giving into these phobias isn't necessary.

I looked up the name for fear of heights and I cannot believe some of the phobias I found. Makes me wonder about people. I mean, really now.  ::)

Anablephobia- Fear of looking up. (maybe they had a bad experience with birds as children?)
Anglophobia- Fear of England or English culture, etc.
Bolshephobia- Fear of Bolsheviks.
Barophobia- Fear of gravity. (go live on the moon then)
Cathisophobia- Fear of sitting. (what the hell do you do if you have this?? )
Cherophobia- Fear of gaiety. (these people must be real fun to hang with)
Didaskaleinophobia- Fear of going to school. (if only I would have known about this one in high school. would have been a better excuse than, I feel sick!)
Dutchphobia- Fear of the Dutch. (heh)
Geniophobia- Fear of chins.
Phobophobia- Fear of phobias.  ??)

And finally, I think a few of us here suffer from this one:

Allodoxaphobia- Fear of opinions.

 ;)

From Wikipedia:

Triskaidekaphobia (from Greek tris=three, kai=and, deka=ten) is fear of the number 13; it is a superstition and related to a specific fear of Friday the 13th, called paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia.

We have two upcoming Friday the 13ths in a row, so these people will not be happy.

However:

In Romanian, Greek and Spanish cultures, Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky.

It sounds so familiar. One day I woke up only to find a cockroach at my door. Nobody was home and I thought about what to do, for half an hour, I called my dad and he told me that he couldn't come because he was at work. I was watching it while talking. Then finally I killed it after half an hour later and then I cried for a long time. It was one of my worst days ever. BTW cockroaches don't just stand it one place especially if it's day, it couldn't move because it was poisoned. I couldn't even get near to a POISONED cockroach.
I don't have other phobias. But this one's driving me mad.

Speaking of these critters:  I was sitting in a food court in New Orleans last year....and I had no clue but a huge cockroach had crawled up my bare arm.  It must've been about four inches long--UGH!!  What was also bad was that I went to the restroom to wash my arm, but they ran out of soap.  Yuck! >:(

I think the biggest roach I have ever seen was the size of a pickle.  So disgusting.

I don't think I have a proper phobia... I used to be terrified of public speaking, but I stuck myself in a debating squad for a while, which kinda helped. And I think I used to have needle-phobia (whatever the scientific name for it is ;D )... used to be absolutely terrified of injections/blood-tests. I still don't like this sort of thing now, but I think I grew out of being terrified.
The thing I never could do (and still won't do) is go on rides, as in roller-coaster-type stuff. I'm not sure if it's a heights thing. I used to be scared of heights when I was younger (wow, what wasn't I scared of? ;D ), but now I can go up mountains and do rock-climbing, etc. So I think it's mainly the lack of control - the fact that I can't stop or get off the ride if I wanted to. Plus the height thing.

I'm weird ;D

Octie, I am scared of public speaking too.  The only thing that helps is to do it quite often...  Practice makes the fear go away.  This semester I have been assigned to do some public speaking projects (debates, presentations, faux stuttering with strangers...ahhh), but the more I do these things, the less I'm afraid.  It looks like I'm going to have an awfully "chatty" semester, though.   :-/

Also, I never thought I was afraid of heights, but I've realized recently that I can't deal with looking downwards if I'm rock climbing.  It makes me sick.  Maybe I'm terrified of the sensation or idea of falling from a great height--I used to have nightmares about that sort of thing.  Otherwise I'm perfectly fine with looking outside in airplanes and skyscrapers.

In fact, everybody is terrified of public speaking. I agree it takes practice. I remember some 3 years ago a case, when a girl was to do some public speaking in front of 3 groups of students. When she came to the front and climbed the rostrum and looked at the audience...she fell backwards on the floor. I didn`t see it, but people say it was terrible. She was hurt.
Now that you`ve mentioned a roller-coaster, I confess that I am absolutely incapable of doing it. I tried it once in my life unaware what it would mean to me and ended up lying on the floor of the cabin waiting for the ride to be over. I have never even thought of riding again. So this is my phobia.

I hike and exercise quite a bit actually. Doesn't help with the anxiety. I mean, it relieves stress, but anxiety is more a physical reaction to certain situations. I've actually gotten a lot better with it over the years. I think. My doctor didn't recommend therapy. You have to be committed to do all that stuff anyway like behavior modification and so on. I know my limitations! But these meds are sort of making me a bit zombie like, so I don't know if I'll continue with it. Rather be anxious.

I think keeping yourself busy is a good way to curb anxiety issues.  Healthy distractions can be helpful, IMO.  However, I mentioned therapy earlier because it can help to air out past or current issues that may contribute to anxiety.  Commitment to therapy is important, but it definitely isn't for everyone.

I'd rather be a crazy rather than conform to what is accepted as "normal" anymore. Personally, I think most people are insane. Or just really, really stupid.

Anxiety can be killed by having a healthy way of life. You plan what you are to do the next day, have a schedule, or a timetable. Try to stick to it. If something occurs, take some time, stay calm and cool to be able to think over the situation properly.
But still, what is most important is HEALTHY LIFE! And you will manage everything well.

People are just really, really stupid.  I can't believe how many stupid idiotic people there is in this world.  How do they function? How do they get up everyday and function when they are so stupid?

Sorry, just been one of those days.

It's okay.  I've probably asked myself the same question before.  This is a good argument in favor of contraception too, LOL!  Don't let stupid people breed more stupid people.  :P

My biggest fear is Spiders. I always make my mom kill them. She always teases me about what I'm going to do when grow up and move out and I tell her thats what boyfriends and husbands are for  ;D It sounds silly but I really freak out. I had my mom cover all the pictures of spiders in the invertabrate section of my Bio textbook because I could not look at them. I also have a fear of drowning because I can't swim. I can't go near large bodies of water because I'm afread I'll fall in!

First that come to mind: public humiliation, speaking in front of a crowd, frogs and mouses.

I'm also claustrophobic to a small extent.

I am extremely afraid of snakes. My brother used to have nightmares about me getting bit by a rattlesnake so he always told me that if I saw a snake when I was out playing to run in the house as fast as I could. He was sort of justified in his fears because the county we lived in was known for the rattler population. I never actually saw one but a lady who grew up in our house before my family lived there said one came in the yard when she was little. She was out playing and her mom looked out the window and saw it. So I wonder if my brother heard that story. Whatever the case, his warnings worked...too well!

I used to sell garter snakes at school in Jr. High! I always took the shortcut along the old railroad tracks and in May/June they were everywhere. I'd get 1$ a snake. Needless to say the school was full of snakes!!!

Good grief! I would have had to transfer out of that school!

LOL I would have, too! I hate snakes. I also hate any sort of insect. The only insects that don't frighten me are ladybugs.

My biggest fear is a large-scale terrorist attack, or a shooting at one of my kids' schools. Like you, Ovi, I am claustrophobic -- if I don't think I can get out of particular location (esp. elevators) my anxiety kicks in big time. I had a hard time in DC when the subways would stop in the tunnels. UGH.

Snakes are a big one for me, I want to run from them, there are ones here that can kill, in fact the Eastern Brown snake is quite common where I live, luckily they are shy of humans...big spiders give me the sh*ts as well :D

I also have a fear of big dogs after seeing 2 German Shepherds savage a child in a park

When I first played in a band (age 19) I remember getting up on stage and basically freezing, my fingers went stiff and I had an ache in my chest such was my anxiety, luckily I overcame this, now I could walk on any stage without fear

My only fear is that either someone will steal my Beatles collection or that I'll go deaf and won't be able to listen to their albums anymore.  :'(

He made me laugh with this song....

My dad got a big kick out of this too, especially the ending.

My cousin's husband was a professional musician for many years and worked with Jim Stafford at one time. He taught him to play the piano, so I've been told.

Always learning something new on this forum! I'd never heard of Jim Stafford before.

On a semi-related note, I was surprised to learn that Al Jolson was Lithuanian. I'm half-Lithuanian myself, and it's not a common nationality, at least not in my experience. I usually get "Lith - u - WHAT?" when it comes up.

Off to learn more about Jim Stafford.....

Stafford was on the radio a fair amount in the 70's with the songs posted. I think Spiders and Snakes was on constantly when it was released.

I have a boxed set of Al Jolson records from way back upstairs. I don't have a 78 speed stereo anymore. I'll send a picture sometime!
