Beatles Covers: Bowie versus Elton
« on: April 25, 2004, 04:47:15 AM »

In the mid 70s, Elton John and David Bowie both made high profile covers of Beatles songs.

Moreover, both songs contained John Lennon on guitar.

I am wanting to know which cover you think is best.

This will be an interesting poll, I think ... I hope!

I've always thought that Elton John's version of Lucy is not all that good, lacking the verve of the original. But I seem to remember John Lennon saying that he liked what Elton did with the song, so there you go ...

But for me Bowie's Universe is a pretty good interpretation of that song. So that gets my vote.

Thank you for your commentary, Maria.

This is what John Lennon said about Across the Universe:

That was an old song of mine. I gave it away because we made a lousy version of it, and then Spector made an improved lousy version of it and it ended up on the 'Let It Be' LP, which none of us would have anything to do with.

So I just went down to Electric whatever, where he was recording, and I did whatever you do. Then he, or the guitarist, had this sort of a lick, and we made a song out of it, called 'Fame.' It's an interesting track. So that's the extent of it, and they'll be on his new album - the one with 'Young Americans' on it."

And David Bowie:

'Across The Universe'... was a flower power sort of thing John Lennon wrote. I always thought it was fabulous, but very watery in the original, and I hammered the hell out of it. Not many people like it. I like it a lot and I think I sing very well at end of it.

People say I used John Lennon on the track ... but let me tell you ... no one uses John Lennon. John just came and played on it. He was lovely."

Two musical geniuses recording together. What a moment in time.

LSD is far better.  Bowie's is listless and boring.

I think 'listless and boring' is a better description of Elton's version which was more played by the rules but sounded a bit flat.

For me it's always a disappointment when covers are attempted close to the original.

Why do that when you can simply play the sparkling original from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band instead?

I thought Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds was an original song by Elton John until later in the year when I first heard about Sgt. Pepper.

Those were great comments from John Lennon and David Bowie about Across The Universe - I love the "no-one uses John Lennon" remark! Thanks for posting Adam D :D
