I love George...and I am not George bashing...but if you have seen the video for "Got My Mind Set On You" you know that this is the funniest video ever in the worst and saddest possible way. First of all, is this really the BEST they could come up with? You know this wasn't George's idea...."Let's sit in a room and have literally every inch of the room bob up and down, SORT of in tune with the music. Oh yeah...and a squirrel playing the saxophone. A squirrel doesn't belong in a study? Really? Oh well. Let's do it anyway."
The whole video, George looks totally PO'd. To which my mom says "No, that's just how George looks" but I think he looks even more annoyed than usual. Then...there comes the bridge. When suddenly, for no reason, "George" cleverly disguised as a stunt double who looks nothing like him hops out of his chair and begins to do strange acrobatic dancing around the study. As the bridge ends, "George" hops back into the chair - cut to the worst piece of editing ever done - even for the 80's. :)

I agree. I always liked this video. The room coming to life is brilliant surrealism....and kind of trippy. I think George liked the video. I don't think he looks p*ssed off at all, just typically "Quiet George" which is nicely offset by the sudden acrobatic dancing.
Sometimes during the winter, critters get into the house. I had a raccoon get into the den once through the chimney. Field mice and chipmunks get in too, on occasion. I had to chase the raccoon out of the house. The mice and chipmunks find their own way out (and in) but I know if they've paid a visit. I'm quite grateful for this video. If I ever hear saxophone music coming from the den, I'll know a squirrel got in.

Like many things from the 80's it looks comical now but im betting at the time it was preety cool, the other video, ' when we where fab' also looks pretty dated but George was making a comeback and wanted to appeal to as many people as possible.

OMG, fendertele, it's almost identical to the winegum advert - good eye/ear! I wonder if the same producer did both ... anyone know if this is the case (I did a quick google search and didn't find anything)?

Hey Fendertele ... it seems that George is playing the 3 chords of the song in about a million different ways on the fretboard. Are all those fingerings legit, or is it "miming" to an excessive degree? If it is real (which I suspect), is it that impressive that he knows all those ways to play the same chords, or is that pretty much expected to be in every experienced guitarist's skill set? I remember there was a song in the 80s, "Shieks of Sultan" I think, had a line like "Guitar George, he knows all the chords", I always wondered if this was an homage to our George ...

Maybe it is just really 80's....I standby my opinion though that songs like "Wah-Wah", "What is Life", "All Things Must Pass", and "Give Me Love" compared to "Got My Mind Set On You" make this song less-than-incredible. And I didn't mean "sad" as in boo-hoo, just sad as in "such a shame"....
Speaking of the Beatles doing things in the 80's that are "so 80's"....

the one taken in the library is called the haunted house version...the one with the boy and girl is the original...but someone talked george into doing the house one....he did the band one because he thought the other 2 were over the top a bit....

Well, you know what you like, and so do I. This song is a "miss" for me-- I don't care for it at all. Which shows once again how out of step I am with so many #1 tunes. I did think the video was cute in a surreal way, loved the fake George dancing, but wished so many of the critters didn't look so obviously dead and dried out.

But hey, help me out please with all the fingering of the chords he does in that video! Are they all legit!? Is it really impressive he knows all those fingerings, or is it just de rigeur for any reasonably good guitarist? Enquiring (inquiring?) minds want to know!

From watchinf the video these were the chords i saw him playing, so i played them over a drum beat and recorded it, i think it sounds about right, but there could be extra chords i missed, plus its hard to tell as the guitar is really hidden in the mix

I always thought this video was completely HILLARIOUS! Not as amazing as Crackerbox Palace but still good.
My favorite part is when he jumps up and does a back flip it is so obviously not George which makes in 10 times funnier.
Whether he liked it or not, whose to say, but George. All I know is it probably pleased the public because it was hillarious.
And I like the squirrel playing the sax at the end. This video is just soooo funny! :D

I Got My Mind Set On You was written by Rudy Clark. He also wrote The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss), If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody, Good Lovin', Everybody Plays The Fool and co-wrote Do The Monkey with Bobby Darin.

Same here..but now that i have exposed myself to the sprawling diversity of George's OTHER efforts, when i come back to this song i find i don't really want to hear it!
It is VERY repetitive..but still a fun song. The music video for it makes it even more enjoyable..and it is what i remember immediately upon hearing it. It also has a shred of meaning in another way - This was the song that 'introduced' me to George.
My how much i have learned from him since then....

James Ray has a new fan!
Unfortunately, James Ray's great talent shone all too briefly. He passed away in 1964. His is an interesting story having been discovered in 1961, homeless and living on a Washington DC rooftop. Rudy Clark wrote many of the songs which appeared on his only album James Ray.

I think musicians from George's generation never really took music videos all that seriously. They'd done just fine without them for decades and all of a sudden they had to do all kinds of crazy stuff in front of a camera just to sell a single? When you think of all those rock legends from the 60s and 70s, how many of them ever made a memorable music video? I can't really think of any right now...

Sorry, but I think that's a bit of a Beatle myth. I know it's lazy to quote direct, but it's easier:

I know. Like I said, people like George had been selling millions of singles for decades by just releasing them, and all of a sudden they had to start making videos just to get some airplay. I can imagine that they were a bit reluctant to taking the whole music videos thing very seriously.
It's the same thing with things like MySpace and download-only releases. Most of the new bands seem to embrace it, but many of the established bands don't seem to be too comfortable with it because they a business that's been very successful for them changing.

Kevin, I just enjoy George's "we invented" sayings throughout Anthology. I don't take them all seriously. And I have a feeling neither did George.
But I do make a distinction between promos and music videos. Promos show the band performing whereas music videos tell a story. The story may or may not be related to the lyrics. In this case, A Hard Day's Night can be considered a motion picture containing several music videos.

I think there's a big difference between promo videos like the Beatles used to make 'em and music videos nowadays. Those promos were just extras for the fans, while it's practically impossible nowadays to even have a hit single without a good video to back it.

Joost, we used to eagerly await The Beatles' promos which appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. Usually by the time they appeared, the songs were already hits here. I'm thankful for those promos and for the special relationship The Beatles had with Ed Sullivan.

I've always had a theory that George made the first sort of 'cheap' video - the moving things one - but when this song became a huge hit he made a better type for it.
All my opinion but it might explain why the original vid is so daggy lol
