Title: An Idea for a Macca Album
Post by: TomMo on June 10, 2012, 07:29:10 PM
I have no idea what the state of Paul's record sales are these days. I suspect they are way down from his early solo days.

Anyway, I wonder what prompts Paul to go back into the studio. Setting "Kisses On The Bottom" aside, is it just a desire to record or is it based solely on when he feels he's compiled enough good songs for an album?

Anyway, my idea is this: Macca should record Lennon-McCartney songs primarily associated with John, with totally different arrangements and maybe a twist or two on vocal interpretation. First of all, he wouldn't need to write any new songs. Secondly, he'd still get a cut of the songwriting royalties. But most importantly, it might be fascinating to see what he could do with some Lennon songs. What do you think? My choices would include: "Not A Second Time", "Anytime At All", "No Reply", "I'm A Loser", "Come Together", "Yer Blues", "Across The Universe", "Help", "You Can't Do That", "This Boy", "Rain", and just for fun, "Bad To Me".

I realize some John fans might find this idea appalling, but it could be kinda cool.

I don't know what to make up from this. What would be the purpose? Re-writing the history? I don't think McCartney would be interested in doing something like that.

Well, we know that Paul has played "John songs" on tours, including "Give Peace A Chance". Obviously they've been meant as a tribute of sorts. "Re-writing history"? I don't see it that way. If Paul can reinterpret old standards, why not old Lennon standards? It doesn't mean a rewrite of history, just a look at how Paul (today) would handle those tunes.

He might very well re-record some of HIS own songs in a new way, but I don't think his "Give My Regards To Broad Street" re-do's were anything special. And he certainly doesn't mess around with Beatles songs in concert. But I think it might even be a good challenge for him to take a look at Lennon songs in a different light. Just saying.

re-recording Beatle songs by an ex Beatle is wrong on so many levels, he did it on Broadstreet already ............and it sucked

He basically did this already -

and it got panned badly. (Although I love it)

Sure it would be an idea in the vein of KOTB. I'd prefer new songs of course, but he's 70 now I'm rather uncritical about anything he does now really, I don't expect anything at all from him. He doesn't need to prove himself to me. Whatever we get from now on is a bonus. This is enjoyable...
