The early recordings...
« on: February 24, 2005, 01:21:16 AM »

With increasing pressure being put on Apple by us fans for the original albums to be re-mixed and remastered into 'real' stereo I have a question for somebody who knows about mixing stuff:

The early recordings were done on 2 track. Does this mean that you can't thoroughly mix them (e.g. drums, bass and vocals in center, rhythm guitar right and lead guitar left) if you only have the two tracks to work from? Or is there a way of splitting the tracks, for example say all guitars were recorded on track 1 and you can in some way seperate them for real stereo?

I'd just like to know, as I'd love to hear a proper over-haul of the entire catalogue and am wondering if it is actually possible.

Any ideas would be greatful.

There would be no easy way. I mean if the guitars were all one side and the vocals and drums on the other..the best you coud do is maybe clean them up a bit but you could not pan the seperate instruments around in the mix....

I don't think there is a good enough software program that can extract one particular instrument as there will always be a clash of frequencies.

The best you could attempt would be to copy the two tracks onto extra tracks and maybe try and EQ out the other instruments on each track so Vocals would be more prominent on one , drums on 2, bass on 3 etc. Then you could get some panning. It would not be much fun although if you were right into it, interesting and the results would probably be a bit messy
