I assume this includes solo musicians.
I can't choose between the first two.

1950s
1) Elvis Presley
2) Nat King Cole
3) General Rock 'n' Roll, blues, swing
4) Frank Sinatra
5) Woody Guthrie

1960s
1) The Beatles
2) Bob Dylan
3) Jimi Hendrix
4) The Beach Boys
5) Simon and Garfunkel

1970s
1) Pink Floyd (for me, this was their best era)
2) Bob Dylan (he's still going, so I can put him twice)
3) David Bowie
4) Paul McCartney/Wings (unashamedly)
5) John Lennon (I know putting John Lennon and Paul McCartney may seem a little boring but I don't class other bands or artists to be 'the best')

1980s (this is definitely not my favourite era)
1) Pink Floyd (they're still good)
2) Queen ....?
3) Oh Dear
4) Oh Dear
5) I told you this era was not a good one for me

1990s
1) Louden Wainwright (my favourite of his albums is from this decade, so he is filling the 90's spot)
2) Jeff Buckley
3) Pulp
4) Red Hot Chilli Peppers
5) Can't think of any more...

2000s
1) Rufus Wainwright
2) Jakob Dylan (there is a trend here, but I swear this isn't intentional)
3) Jack Johnson
4) The Killers ...?
5) I can't think of any more again ;sorry

Walrus your obviously a huge Oasis fan but I just cant see whats good about them, they were surely just so derivative..

 ha2ha
ignore me Im just being argumentative  roll:)

You cannot judge Oasis until you've heard this song:

Oasis - Champagne Supernova

I don't hear any derivativity in that song.  ;D
