so yeah here some basses and guitars used by legendary James Paul "Macca" McCartney, world's greatest and most influenced bass-guitarist and greatest multi-instrumentalist.

Hi!! ;)
Is there a pick up on fitted to McCartney's Zenith besides the bridge?? If so..., which kind of pick up is it??
Thanks in advance!! ;)
Best!! ;)
Xosé
-
Compare Paul's Zenith with Paul's Rossetti Solid 7 (=reverted to a bass with three piano strings): a pick up is clearly seen besides Rossetti's bridge. This picture is taken at The Casbah (=probably before their 1st trip to Hamburg in 1960. But I don't know the precise date... Can anybody helps??)
My hypothesis reads: Zenith's pick up and Rosstti's one on this picture could be the same device. Now the question arises: which pick up is that one??
Best!! ;)

Great stuff guys. :)
-
And do you know the bass on "Junior's farm" video please?
-
So Paul was playing bass before their first trip to Hamburg? Never made the connection between the Casbah 3 string pic and the pre-Hamburg fact. I thought he only started playing bass after Stu faded away from the group. Anyone got facts/details, please?
-
...Never made the connection between the Casbah 3 string pic and the pre-Hamburg fact...
The question is: when is that Casbah three string pic from?? Does it really predate 1st trip to Hamburg?? (=1960, August the 16th.) Are there more pics from that session??
According to Andy Babiuk, Paul used his Rosetti Solid 7 as a 3 string bass in several gigs in Liverpool in the Spring of 1961, this is after Chas Newby left the band (=his last gig was 1960, December th 31th.) and before their 2nd trip to Hamburg (=1961, March the 29th.)

I don't think Paul played bass on a regular base prior to the first Hamburg trip. Stuart Sutcliffe was on bass then. So I go with Andy Babiuk on this on. I seem to remember that Paul bought his first Hofner somewhere in April 1961, but I could be wrong.
Haven't got a clue about the pick ups.
-
Hi Bobber!! ;)
I don't think Paul played bass on a regular base prior to the first Hamburg trip...
No he didn't. His first engagements with the bass were in Hamburg 1st stay there on Stuart absences. He used Stu's Höfner 500/5 (=Brunette 333 in Selmer catalogue) played upside down...
...I seem to remember that Paul bought his first Hofner somewhere in April 1961, but I could be wrong...
No you aren't wrong. He bought it at a music shop in Central Hamburg (=Steinway. Babiuk says that the seller was a certain Günter Hopper...)
But it seems that once upon a time two Beatle bass players performed together in The Casbah in 1961, February the 12th: Paul McCartney with his Rosetti Solid 7 converted to a 3 string bass and Stuart Sutcliffe with his Höfner 500/5...

I'm not sure when Stu officially left the band. He rejoined them after he came back from Hamburg. Or he could have joined them on an on-and-off base for old times sake.

Yeah... But the fact is that in April 1961 Paul bought his Höfner, which means that Stu had left the band forever...

Thanks for clarifying that. You guys are great on dates, or do you secretly look themup???!

Let's go back to the Rosetti's subject.
- Paul purchased his Rosetti in 1960, June the 30th. at Frank Hessy's music shop in Liverpool for £21. There is a reproduction of the HP book for this purchase at Andy Babiuk's book, page 33.
- He used it for the first time in July the 2nd., for their performance at the Corporation's Grosvenor Ballroom, Grosvenor Road, Liscard, Wallasey, Cheshire, and until mid-April 1961 (=date unknown??) when he purchased his 1st Höfner 500/1 bass at the small shop in Hamburg city center for 267 DM. It was told that sometimes he played it unplugged (=for example at the famous Litherland Town Hall performance in December the 27th., according to -at least- one witness: Faron Ruffley, from The Faron's Flamingos).
- During those 10 months they had more than 200 (=am I right??) gigs in Merseyside and Hamburg (=Indra, Kaiserkeller and Top Ten). This points to an ample use of the Rosetti.
- Besides John, Paul and George, other group members at those 10 months were Pete Best (=from mid August onwards), Stuart Sutcliffe (=with several absences in December 1960, and January-March 1961), and others like the drummer Norman Chapman or Chas Newby, former guitarist with The Blackjacks and engaged to play the bass with The Beatles. Curiously enough he was also left-handed as Paul (=which bass used Chas Newby to play these gigs??).
- Three photographic sessions with Paul playing his Rosetti have surfaced: 17th. August 1960 at Indra, in its original look with the Royal scratchplate/2 pick ups system. 12th. February 1961 at The Casbah, with the guitar converted to a three strings bass with some piano strings, no Royal scratchplate/2 pick ups system and a Höfner 503 K pick up instead. And finally at the beginning of April 1961 at Top Ten, with the guitar re-strung as a standard six strings guitar and a DeArmond pick up.
Now, several questions arise:
- It has been stated that Paul borrowed Stu's bass for some gigs..., when and where??
- When did he stop to use his Rosetti??
- Was he using his Elpico amp all the time until he got his Höfner bass??
- There is only (=really only one??) one picture with Paul posing with John's Höfner Club 40 guitar. When is it from?? Why is he holding John's guitar and not the Rosetti??
I would love to know your opinnion about this topic...

This is a pic of Chas, I guess from around that time. Pity he's obviously playing a six string guitar here. I'll dig deeper.

But I'm not sure if those recierdings were made after 31 June. Walter Everett, who has made the thorough research about them, place them in April...

Yes: I knew that pic. Thanks A LOT!! ;)
BTW: its said that "...In April 1960 during the school vacation Paul borrowed a neighbour's tape recorder to record the then-called 'Beatals' in his family home at No.20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool..."
The tape recorder was a Gründig TK 12 or TK 20 as the ones seen here, (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1960/60.06-07%20forthlin/60.06-07forthlin.html) and used at some Cavern recordings as well... (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1963/63.01.30%20cavern%20reh/03.jpg)
But..., which is that device behind Paul & John here?? (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1962/62.09.zz%20frothlin%20reh/04.jpg) Is it not the same tape recorder?? ???

Those recordings are indeed dated Spring 1960.
From Beatlology Magazine, September/October 2007. Interview with Chas Newby by Peter Stone:
[...]
PS: To play with The Beatles, did you really have to borrow a leather jacket and a bass guitar?
CN: That's right. I borrowed a bass and a leather jacket from a guy called Tom McGuirk [The Comets, The Pete Best Four]. Tom, I'd known earlier. He was playing with a band that was one of the regulars at the Casbah Club, at the time. So, I borrowed his right-handed Höfner bass and a leather jacket, because at that stage that's what The Beatles wore on stage - all leather stuff. They had leather trousers, cowboy boots, leather jackets, whatever. I managed to get the leather jacket and stood in the background.

From the same interview:
PS: Considering your short association with The Beatles, your impact was career altering for The Beatles. You took over bass. You were a witness and a participant in the birth of Beatlemania. When you left the group after four shows, your departure changed the group forever. At their next gig, on January 5, 1961 at the Litherland Town Hall, Paul switched to bass [Solid 7] and the band became a quartet.
CN: I wasn't aware of that. I'm fishing in my memory here. But, Stuart was back sometime in [late February, 1961]. The first time I recall them being a quartet was when they got back from Germany the second time which would be in the middle of '61, when they'd done their stint. That was the time when Paul bought his left-handed Höfner. And, from then on, I remember then as being a quartet. From the four dates I played, I think Stuart came back and he must have played some dates [Stuart may have played with The Beatles on occasion, but The Beatles were a quartet, starting January 5, 1961], then they went out to Germany again, and then the next time they came back, Paul's playing bass and Stuart's decided to become an Art student again.

The fact is that there are only two pictures of Paul playing his Solid 7 in Liverpool, (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1961/61.02.12%20casbah/61.02.12casbah.html) both at The Casbah, and presumably from the same day: 1961, February the 12th. Stu is there as well, so..., how many gigs did they as a quartet at those days??

Andy Babiuk, page 47:
"...Several Liverpudlian bands of the era interviewed for this book went to see The Beatles while Sutcliffe was in the group and remember McCartney with his three-string bass plugged in, but with the other end of the lead (cord) stuffed into his jacket pocket and not plugged into an amp at all. This may explain how the group overcame the sonic problem of two bass players. McCartney himself confirmed the practice when asked about his falling-apart Rosetti. 'I used to...piece it together and plug it but not plug it in, [that is to say I would] just play it not plugged in'..."
This could mean that in this picture (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1961/61.02.12%20casbah/5.jpg) the Rosetti could not be sounding through an amp, and the same could be happening here (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1961/61.02.12%20casbah/1.jpg)...
At these pictures (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1961/61.03.27%2007.02%20top%20ten/01%20Jergen%20Vollmer1/01vollmer.html) the Rosetti has been re-strung with six strings and another pick up (=possibly a DeArmond one). But..., what about Paul McCartney's chords with his right hand?? They seem to be the same all the time... ???
Here (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1961/61.03.27%2007.02%20top%20ten/02%20Jergen%20Vollmer2/vollmer2.html) we see four guitars (=Stu's Höfner bass, John's Rick, Paul's Rosetti and George's Futurama) and only three amps (=George's Selmer Truvoice, Stu's Gibson GA-40 Les Paul and John's Fender Deluxe...) ???

isnt this the time that paul played the piano and playbacked with his guitar when he had to sing up front?
Not exactly. IMHO at those Top Ten season (=April 1961) he didn't playbacked with his guitar (=although he did it earlier in Liverpool in January-March), because a new pick up was attached to the Rosetti: a DeArmond one. At these photos (http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1961/61.03.27%2007.02%20top%20ten/02%20Jergen%20Vollmer2/vollmer2.html) the new pick up is seen with all the cable/wire stuff, and a lead is plugged into the amp...

Unfortunately there's no such thing known. Although we once had a member here who told us he had recordings of The Beatles playing in the Indra Club in Hamburg, recordings like that are believed to be non-existing. There's the recording now known as the Braun-Kirchherr Tapes, Spring 1960. I believe that the next recording are the songs with Tony Sheridan.

Norman Chapman only played a handful of gigs in, I think, June or July 1960. There's a separate thread on him on this forums.
- It has been stated that Paul borrowed Stu's bass for some gigs..., when and where??
It's true this has been stated, but so far I haven't found any proof for this. Maybe Eric Krasker can be of any help solving this?
- When did he stop to use his Rosetti??
I haven't got an exact date, but from the pictures taken in the Top Ten we can learn that Paul obviously spent some time at the piano as well. The Rosetti was not as solid as the name suggested.
- Was he using his Elpico amp all the time until he got his Höfner bass??
I really can't tell...
- There is only (=really only one??) one picture with Paul posing with John's Höfner Club 40 guitar. When is it from?? Why is he holding John's guitar and not the Rosetti??
Is it this one?

You mean you own it? That's wonderful! Congratulations. Is it really as bad as McCartney describes it?

It looks as if the Hofner Club 40 IS restrung for a lefthanded guitarist.
Yes... Correct... But soon after (=when??) John sold it out...

...BTW: a couple of weeks ago I ordered a copy of SEP/OCT 2007 Beatlology Magazine, but at their website I couldn't see Peter Stone's interview to Chas Newby in the list of contents for this issue. Could you, please, check for me the list of contents at your own issue??...
They never sent the magazine although I paid for it... ???

It seems that eBay is going to recover my money. But, of course, what I wanted was the magazine. Would be very difficult for you to scan for me the pages with Chas Newby interview?? ::)

Xose, I sent it by PM. You might start a thread on the Egmond guitars. Maybe others can help as well.

Does Paul still own both of his original Hofner violin basses?
I know one of them still has the 1966 set list taped to the edge - I assume that is the 1963 model, yes?
Is it one of these two guitars that he uses on stage now, or does he use a replacement when he plays live?

Can anyone answer the following questions;
1) Did Paul use his Ric bass on Rubber Soul and if so what songs?
2) Did Paul use the Ric for the whole of Revolver & Pepper ?
3) Did he use the Fender Jazz for the whole of the White Album ?
4) who did the right handed Jazz bass belong too ?
5) Who painted the Ric bass ?
6) is the brown Ric bass the same one but stripped (like Johns Epiphone) ?

Kevin, your questions regarding his Rickenbacker 4001S are answered here: http://www.rickbeat.com/modelslibrary/4001spmc/4001spmc.htm (http://www.rickbeat.com/modelslibrary/4001spmc/4001spmc.htm)

You're welcome, Kev.
Here's an article quoting Mark Arnquist who was in charge of special repairs at the Rickenbacker factory from July 1972 to October 1976. He describes the repairs to Paul's 4001S just prior to the Wings Over America Tour: http://www.thecanteen.com/arnquist.html (http://www.thecanteen.com/arnquist.html)
