Fun question!

I think I would buy "A Hard Day's Night".

Even though it's from their early period it's still my fourth favorite Beatles album.
It might not be as profound as their later albums, but it's just perfect pop to me.
The melodies are some of the most timeless ever and the lyrics are simple, clever and very easy to relate to.

I mean who could not be floored by the 2 minute punch that is the title track?
That first chord and then bam, intensity and passion blend in with a a melody you can't get out of your head.

You can even dance to it!

Either '1' (speaks for itself) of 'Magical Mystery Tour' (for the simple reason that I think that no other Beatles album has better songs overall).

Beatles 1, it's what got me obsessed when I was eight.

It totally depends on which friend. :P Most people I'd buy Sgt. Pepper's, because that's the first album I heard and it got me hooked, but one just seems to be more of a Rubber Soul person. :)

Well I think it would be the yellow submaeine soundtrack. Because my friend has only heard three beatle songs and she sings them all the time so I don't want to take her from what she knows after that I will slowly push her to more beatles = )

I'd have to say, I definitely would not buy a friend anything Please Please Me - A Hard Day's Night, because I wouldn't want them to be like those people who post pictures of themselves on deviantArt and entitle them 'I'm Happy Just To Dance With You' and stuff like that and then you go onto the profile and they don't give two hoots about the actual music of The Beatles. It's sheer hell searching for Beatles fanart and having a ton of that pop up.

Abbey Road, definitely. It's my favorite album and it really got me hooked onto them. And if Abbey was unavailable, I'd get Sgt Pepper.

compilations wreck fans... if you start with a compilation you often never dig deep into a band...

I'd go for what I had first which was the white album still my favorite.

I'd probably give them CD's with songs they'd recognize. But I have one friend who keeps begging me to let her borrow all my Beatle CD's because her dad only likes the hits. So I'd either go with Sgt. Pepper's or Abbey Road.

Provided it is a friend who does not own any Beatles and does not know about Beatles, I would start first with Rubber Soul.

Good thread.

Actually, I´ve been meaning to give my work colleague his first Beatle cd. This is actually more difficult than I first thought.  :) I think I will either give him Rubber Soul or Abbey Road.

Either "1" or Rubber Soul. Rubber Soul has a nice mix of song styles

Some people here are suggesting giving "1" is a good way of getting people into The Beatles. But the way I see it - everybody has heard of the likes of Yesterday, A Hard Day's Night and Let It Be. I would rather want people to discover For No One, Happiness is a Warm Gun, The medley on Abbey Road and such...

But of course if this person is younger than 12 years then surely "1" is the real deal. :-)

Revolver: a bit like 'the best of both worlds'.

There was a hint of the latter world in the song "From Me To You" on Help and likewise with "Norwegian Wood" on Rubber Soul but , absolutely,  it would be Revolver.

I made my own CD just for this purpose. I call it a Beatles Primer... gave it to a friend recently and she loves the Beatles now. (The extent of her knowledge before was limited to responding, "Uh, Imagine?" when I had asked her to name a Beatles song.)

But if it had to be an actual Beatles album, it would be Abbey Road. Everyone loves the songs on Abbey Road.

Hey all, I just re-added the poll, so you can actually vote! :P
It’s been nice reading through these posts.

Hey lennonista, may I ask what your track listing is for Beatles Primer? (excellent title, by the way!)

Actually, despite starting this topic about which one album I would get for a friend, I tend to be more like you. I make a mix CD, however, the track list varied depending on the person.

Here is the most recent one I made, based on someone who knew virtually no Beatles songs, but did tell me that they liked the Love versions of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" better than the original master versions when I played them.

1. Help!
2. Let It Be
3. Here Comes the Sun
4. For No One
5. Dear Prudence
6. Two of Us
7. Eleanor Rigby
8. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Love Version)
9. A Day in the Life
10. In My Life
11. Yesterday
12. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
13. I'll Follow the Sun
14. Something
15. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
16. Hey Jude
17. Blackbird
18. The Fool on the Hill
19. Mother Nature's Son
20. And I Love Her
21. Strawberry Fields Forever (Anthology Version - Take 1)
22. I Will
23. Across the Universe
24. Here, There and Everywhere
25. Golden Slumbers
26. Carry That Weight
27. The End
28. Her Majesty

I chose the One album because it just goes from start to finish, simple as that. It covers all the Beatles eras, and it's the first of their albums that I heard. I fell in love with the Beatles after I heard this album. About a year ago, I let my one friend (who hates the Beatles, probably just 'cause she knows I love them and wants to annoy me) borrow the One album. She didn't ask, I just chose that one without thinking twice. So, I think it's a good introductory album. But, I thought for sure I would turn her into a fan. She said it was alright, but it was too hippy-ish for her. I'm like "What??"  roll:) Guess it didn't work for her. But she likes to be difficult sometimes, lol.
