Post by: Xose on January 21, 2009, 09:53:47 AM
I found this photo at Anthology book. Does anybody know if this is Frank Hessy's music shop in Liverpool?? If so..., when could be dated the photo??

Thank you in advance and best wishes!! ;)

Picture by Astrid Kirchherr. It is Frank Hessy's Music Centre. Looking at the public's haircut, I'd say it's 63 or 64. I assume it's Frank himself in the shop and I do think that the pictures are from the same day. I have Astrid's book with this picture at home and I can check the exact date later if you want.

Thnk you SO much onec more, Bobber!! ;)

Judging from Hessy's look -and assuming that he is the man-, it seems that both photos could be taken at the same time.., couldn't they?? What do you think??

Of course, my main interest is the Spanish guitar seen at the front in the 1st picture...

Best!! ;)

Judging by the guitars hanging on the wall aswell as his haircut and uniform makes it seem reasonable to say that they were both taken on the same day to me. :)

Oh yes...

If those 2 photos were taken by Astrid Kircherr..., when was Astrid in Liverpool?? I mean: she was at London somewhere in 1964, and she made there some photo sessions at Beatles' homes..., didn't she?? Which month?? Maybe those Liverpool's photos were taken at the same time..

Best!! ;)

^I think around the time of the recordings of A Hard Day's Night, so spring 1964. There's pictures of the film in the book as well. I'll be home tonight late, I will check Astrid's book on the copyrights and so.

Ok. I will wait for your news tonight...

BTW: does anybody know if Olivia Harrison has any kind of 'George Harrison foundation'?? Perhaps George's Ramirez is still part of Olivia's goods...

All pictures dated from spring 1964.

Picture of George and Astrid:  "Astrid at George and Ringo's rented Green Street flat in London.
Picture of John (there is another one of John actually playing the guitar. I will have to scan the picture to show it in here): ' John plays guitar at his and Cynthia's London flat.

There's a couple of more pictures of George playing guitar as well (including the one with Ringo on the background), but they're not as good as the one already posted. There's also another picture of Ringo with the guitar, fooling around somewhat.

I can make a scan of the other pictures of George playing guitar and of John as well, but I won't see a scanner until Friday, so you'll have to wait a little while.  :)

Ok. Thanks anyway... ;)

I think I have the other photo of John with the guitar (=this one?? (http://www.dmbeatles.com/forums/m-1231338956/s-1/)), and I wonder where that guitar comes from, as it's not a Spanish guitar...

They usually buy just the right to reproduce. The copyright remains in the ownership of the originator, along with the negatives. Typically a publication will purchase a right of usage based on how many copies are printed. This is typical of newspapers and magazines. If they want to own the complete rights to an image, they can negotiate a price with the photographer. Unless of course, you're a staff photographer, in which case you own jack sh*t.

The first one was already posted in here. It looks like Ringo in the background, but in fact it is a photo. I will post the Ringo picture later. I presume it is George's guitar he's holding.

It's from the same Astrid Kirchherr session's at George and Ringo's flat in Londen, March 1964, you have already posted. As you can see froim Astrid's photo, Frank Hessy's store looks different from the film clip from 'Ferry Cross the Mersey.' There is a scene, supposedly in Hessy's, where you can see Jim Gretty holding the kids back. It doesn't look like the store I remember. Also, Hessy's at the time was in Stanley Street, a narrow street opposite the post office depot, not the large street with all that traffic seen through the window. Most of Ferry Cross The Mersey was filmed in a studio in London, with various location shots in Liverpool.
Bob Hobbs did work at Rushworths and wrote a regular guitar column for Mersey Beat with Hu Birch. They both ran a guitar school and were members of a guitar club.

So, it is Jim Gretty but not in Hessy's Music Store.

It's Jim Gretty, but I don't know whether it's filmed in the actual store or a studio set. The road outside is certainly not from a view inside Hessy's store in Stanley Street which is where the shop was located at the time.

The shop looks more like Ruyshworths in Whitrechapel than Hessy's, even though Jim Gretty is there. No, I haven't put any of the guitar columns on the site.

Maybe he was there because it was organised a kind of show at Rushworth's, inviting he elevant musicians, as the cameras went there. I have read anywhere that the other urbanely dressed person that the camera focuses on was a certain T P McKenna, an Anglo Irish character actor...

Do you know if Bob Hobbs -as Jim Gretty seemed to do- also offered guitar tuition to the early Beatles??
