time capsule
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:56:39 AM »

Lets say you've been asked, as the end of the world approaches, to load one song per artist/group into the computer going in a time capsule to be launch into space.

pick only one song per artist/group, many ways to go, most popular, most representative, your favorite, etc.

to get it started, some of mine:

Beatles : All My Loving, wanted a song that had them all participating, narrowed down from All you need is love, She Loves You, A Hard Days Night

in no particular order (after the Beatles of course):

Stones : Satisfaction
Zep: Kashmir
Who : Won't get fooled again
U2 : Pride (in the name of love)
Bruce : Born to run
Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
Simon & Garfunkel : The Sound of Silence
Eagles : Hotel California
Fleetwood Mac : The Chain
The Police : Every Breath You Take
Toad the Wet Sprocket : I will not take these things for granted
Tom Petty : Refugee
Van halen : Unchained
REM : So. Central Rain
James Taylor : Country Road
Elton John : Candle in the wind
Aerosmith : Dream on
Michael Jackson : Billy Jean
Dexys Midnight Runners : Come on Eileen  :)

What are some of yours?

I would ask you the same about the Who's "Bell Boy"... :)

I decided to choose not so well known songs that still capture the essence of the bands. "Martha" may not be the best Jefferson Airplane's song, but it includes many of the condiments I love from the band: mellow melody, catchy chorus, unconventional vocal interplays, a psychedelic Indian-like guitar solo, plus a mystic ambient given by acoustic guitars and a bizarre flute.

Fair enough, you've convinced me to give the song another listen.

'Bell Boy' is absolutely incredible in my opinion, one of my all-time favourite songs. The fact that it looks like a goofy, catchy rocker but nothing more on the surface, is even more impressive for when you really get the character's true meaning and the impact it has on Jimmy. One of the saddest and most heart-breaking moments on the album. Moon's vocal delivery - the way he switches from the cartoonish Cockney accent to his real voice - is a very brilliant and subtle move, whether he realized it or not. I could write much more about the track, but I'm not sure if here is the right place to do that.

Hey, I really like "Bell Boy" too! Very entertaining song actually. But you must admit that it's far from being an obvious selection for a time capsule, same case as "Martha", I believe. So that's perfect.

Yeah, that's true.

I also forgot to mention two big favourites:

The Band - I Shall Be Released
The Kinks - Celluloid Heroes

I love "Bell Boy," too, for the same reasons you mentioned, Ovi. The "Some nights I still sleep on the beach / remember when stars were in reach" part never fails to tug at my heart. I read somewhere this is actually Pete singing, because Keith was such a poor singer, but I can't quite tell. It sounds like Keith to me.
