Children, don't do what I have done
I couldn't walk and I tried to run

I think John was talking out of his fathers eyes or actions, almost as a self message to himsilf stating that he shouldnt be a parent that runs out on his child or children.

He failed somewhat with Julian, but made up for it with Sean. My thoughts anyway.

What he means is, what basically every good father tries to get across is this: "don't follow in my footsteps... I haven't led a perfect life... I got heavy into so bad drugs and bad times... I got married and divorced my family... Stay far away from this stuff... I may have led a bad life, but I won't let you down as a father... etc..."

He tried running through his life, trying to please himself with all that he could before he understood what it was all about in the first place...

Make sense?

He was going through Primal Therapy. All the old wounds, and his were horrendous and deep--Dad leaving at 5; Mom getting killed by a drunk off-duty cop before he made peace with her, all the loss and hurt were brought to the fore in a big way, and he had to confront them for the first time in his life. He went from a hurt young scruff to being idolized and deified by the entire planet. He couldn't walk alright, and he tried to run. He didn't have time to walk with him being thrust into the spotlight. He didn't have the luxury of confronting his past until this period. This is what I believe he was going through, not a message to Julian or any of that other crap.
