I think it's John's song.
It's very 'Lennon-ish' to me, too.

I was actually there when he wrote the song, but that's most definately another story for another time (hides from the hounding press)...

It's a little hazy to me now, but I think I remember the exact situation...

We were sitting in a room (God knows where!), and he looked up to the bunch of us who were hanging out with him (why no one brought a camera, I don't know... it just wasn't really that big a deal back then), just before his pen started moving... He said, "I want to write something... something... real... something lasting..." someone mentioned he write about the government, but others said nah, it was not him... then he said, "I'll write about liverpool. About my life" We sat in amazement as he wrote out the entire song in front of us... Then he picked up the guitar, fiddled around a bit, then suddenly, he got this look in his eyes... Then, bum bum, bumbumbumbum (the opening riff to the song)...

And a hit was born... It was really a great experience! And a beautiful song that Paul had nothing to do with whatsoever.

McCartney: I recall going off for half an hour and sitting with a Mellotron he had, writing the tune,

Hmmmm did John or even EMI have a mellotron in 1965? I don't think so! I think Macca's memory is a bit hazy there! :)

Whoever created this song is a musical genius. Actually, they both are anyways, so that won't change how great this song is.

I love the harmony in it, it's a really sweet sounding tune and quite nice to listen to.

The only song that comes close to rivalling In My Life is The Beach Boys God Only Knows. It's important to remember that hardly nobody were introspective in music at this point. John Lennon could be classed a genius solely for this track. Completely underrated in what it did for music and songwriting.

Do you mean rivalling in introspectiveness, or beauty, or just being AAAAAAAAAA quality?

I think A Day In The Life is kinda overrated. Great song, just not one of my favorites.

yeah man it's pretty Lennon-ish !! John loved talking about himself, look "Girl" for instance, he  has always something to tell, he's so nostalgic sometimes, always looking back to the past, to the old memories !! Paul didn't have this "inner-self" aspect reflected into his songs...dont know maybe i'm messing up, but that's what i feel!

Know this is old, but thought Gerry and The Pacemakers Ferry Cross The Mersey, which predates In My Life by a year, deserve a nod:

Life goes on day after day
Hearts torn in every way
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay
People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
and always take me there
The place I love
People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is boy
We'll never turn you away
So I'll continue to say
Here I always will stay
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay
and here I'll stay
Here I'll stay

Thought I could link this with In my life - Rubber Soul - to - I'm Looking Through You..

Tenuous ..I know, but it didn't deserve a whole new thread.

I was reading Beatle Gear, and read this great little passage. Just wondered if anyone can back this up? -

Barry Tashian of The Remains - " We usually talked more about music and records [than instruments]. But I did ask Ringo about 'I'm Looking Through You' and that tapping percussion sound on it. He told me that I was privy to a great secret, that he just tapped on a pack of matches with his finger"

If this is true..it's another shade of expertise to fizzle the Anti-Ringo/Drumming myths..

what a true legend :)

Ringo: Don't you et smart with me, you know."

He's a great drummer, very good one. Lots of fantastic moments, but I love his drums in songs like: Long, Long, Long, A Day In The Life, I Me Mine, Come Together, She Said, She Said,... Do you know what I mean? Powerful drums!
Ringo: I'm The Greatest. Yes, YOU are!.

Hmmmm did John or even EMI have a mellotron in 1965? I don't think so! I think Macca's memory is a bit hazy there! :)

Maybe Paul was thinking about a keyboard instead of a mellotron, but his memory fails when he remembers that year. The same it happened to him when he was telling an anecdote about the favourites songs of John when they were filmming Help! and according to Paul, when listening a side of a tape, John prefaired Here There and Everywhere to the songs of him on the same side of the tape (filmming Help!)  :-/

Actually, John owned a mellotron, purchased in 1965.

What makes you think his "memory fails"? They were listening to some songs being recorded for Revolver. I think Here There and Everywhere and For No One were on one side of the tape, I'm not sure what John songs were on there but I like both those songs MUCH better than any song John had on Revolver. Paul said that was one of the few times John came out and complimented his songs. What's so hard to believe about that?

Well, there was Rubber Soul in between Help! and Revolver. Was "Here There and Everywhere" being recorded for Rubber Soul and they put it off until Revolver?

Any claim that "In My Life" is 100% a Lennon song is incorrect.
The only question is the degree of Paul's help.

I think Paul probably exaggerates the degree of involvement he had with this song, but it does sound like his style of writing, all right.
