"The Studio Equipment And Techniques Used To Create Their Classic Albums"
' This extraordinary books fills a gap on your Beatles' book shelf that you probably didn't realise was there. Mark Lewisohn has covered all the dates and sessions, and Andy Babiuk detailed the Beatles' gear, but the nitty gritty of how they actually recorded has never been covered. This meticulous, weighty, 500-plus page hardback plugs that gap. There are histories of all the studios used, with pictures too. Every tape recorder and microphone employed is described, every effect dissected. Drawings show studio layouts with each Beatle's position marked. Sections on individual songs demonstrate how recording tracks were used, and the nature of bounce downs to single tracks is explained. Studio personnel are interviewed and diaries illustrated. Beautifully designed and well-written in non-techspeak this is impossible to put down. If the photos showing the editing of a tape with scissors don't seduce you, the pics of knobs on consoles will. A major publication.
