Macca, U2 in Sgt Pepper Suits
« on: June 28, 2005, 03:20:29 PM »

This is pretty creepy.  Macca and U2 in the Sgt Pepper uniforms to open Live8?  If there are only 4 suits, who doesn't get one--Larry Mullen, Jr.?

I think John and George are rolling over in their graves--with Beethoven.

Poor Paul, has he finally gone soft-headed?  Those cheesy dayglo LSD uniforms are supposed to remind us all of the summer of love and press our leaders for African debt relief?

Apparently he's even changing the lyrics to "Sergeant Pepper" to reference Geldolf and Bono.

Bad idea!

BTW I wonder if Bono will fit in John's uniform?

Poor old Macca - he sets himself up every time these days.

You can see the bashers getting ready for the double hammer hits: the uniforms, and changing the lyrics. But this little basher will reserve judgement (I mean, I'll give him the chance to reconsider, take wiser counsel, grow up, consider his legacy ...).

You can see the defenders getting ready, too. Paul is a rock legend, and can do what he likes. The uniforms were his idea in 1967, so he's got every right now. It's his song, so he can change the lyrics. He's sold millions of records. Yadda, yadda.

It's all too much ...

It was 20 years ago today
Bobby Geldolf asked me to play
he's a hip and philanthropic cat
but who still listens the Boomtown Rats?

Call me Sir Paul or Macca-daddy-G
'cause I'm richer than you'll ever be
Used to sing "When I'm 64"
Now I'm 64 can't sing no more . . .

And I sure hope I don't split my pants
We're Sergeant Peppers U2 Live8 Band . . . .

Bono gets to sing a line
but he really aint no friend of mine
'cause if there gonna be a show
Mac-daddy open and Mac-daddy close

We're debt-reliefin' egomaniacs
we're Sergeant Peppers U2 Live8 Band . . . .

Wow Paul can act like a Diva when he wants to!

Sorry but the wearing of the Sgt. Pepper outfits is just creepy to me. Uh, earth to Paul, YOU ARE NO LONGER 25YEARS OLD!

I don't think he should do it either.  I certainly don't want Bono wearing a Sgt. Pepper costume.  I am not a U2 fan.

If this crap is really true, then I have to go with Ydoll's critique of Paul's revisionism, albeit this is rewriting history in a different context.  Me thinks (though I love him to death) that Paul might be overexposing himself.  Keep the Hofner Sir Macca and perform some Fabs songs, but leave the rest to the museums (Though I would love to see Abe in one of their collarless suits).

I don't think its so bad. How many times are we going to get to see Paul in his psychedelic suit belting out Sgt Pepper? I used to get really p*ssed off in the 70's and 80's when Paul ignored his Beatle past, so I'm happy he's now embracing it and I'm grateful for whatever he gives.
And I reckon he must be feeling a little mortal these days, so many of the Beatle people now gone. I'm happy for him to have his moment.
And think, loads of new people might get turned on to the whole Pepper thing because of this.
And its for a good cause.

Maybe, but you hate to see a once great prizefighter make a buffoon of himself. And U2 has absolutely NO business in Sgt. Pepper gear. Neither does Macca for that matter.

Nice comparison.  Sometimes a guy just doesn't know when to hang up his boxing gloves--or his satin britches.
