I never used to care much for Love You To. But when you listen to Rubber Soul and then Revolver (maybe with a bit of Pet Sounds/Highway 61 thrown in) it stands out as a hugely brave and ambitious piece of work for a pop group. A real quantum leap to even consider placing it on a commercial pop/rock release. Hats off to the man.(and I'm no Harrisonphile)
i wonder though - just as George was finding his feet as a rock writer he switched his energies to Indian music. would he have been better of in the long run sticking to more conventional compositions?

I voted for Norwegian Wood only because that was George's first attempt with the sitar which went over pretty well.  George's sitar influenced the entire flow of the song as evidenced by John's demo.

It's nice to see how George progressed with the instrument in the other songs mentioned.

I adore the mood of Love You To. I can play that one a lot! :)

Welcome back from vacation, Hello Goodbye! Good to see you.

George isn't playing sitar a lot on these recordings. He plays on Tomorrow Never Knows and Norwegian Wood.

This sounded strange to me ... because I've always thought there were more than two ... what do you all think?  ??)

I've counted 4 (one per year) through late 1965 till early 1968:
- Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) (George recorded the sitar part on October 12, 1965)
- Tomorrow Never Knows (George recorded the sitar part on April 22, 1966)
- Within You Without You (George recorded his sitar part on April 03, 1967)
- Across The Universe (George recorded the sitar part on February 04, 1968 )

Some more possible controverses? Naaah  ::):
- Girl (recorded on November 11, 1965, more likely to be a highly capoed acoustic guitar than a sitar)
- Love You To (sitar part recorded on April 11, 1966, there's no credit for the sitar player and it's thought to be George but some session documentation suggests the contrary, but it's not clear yet)
- The Inner Llight (3 sitars recorded by 3 Indian musicians on January 12, 1968 )

Just trying to learn something  ;) ... and very glad if it's about George!!!  ;D

Maybe we should change The Inner Light for Across The Universe (Wild Life/Past Masters version)  :-/

So thought I ... so, as I couldn't believe that, for example, George didn't played a sitar part on Within You Without You I took a look at what Mark Lewisohn said (not because I believe in him a lot but most of the people seem to ::) ... so I'm not saying my sources are better than any others' -even if I've included Mark-) ... acchording to his "Complete" Chronicle (pag 251):

Monday 3 April
"[...] From 10.30 pm to 3.00 am George taped his lead vocal, a sitar part and an occasional dash of acoustic guitar. Then, from 3.00am until the session ended at 6.30 am, the song was mixed into mono - although not yet conclusively"

The same goes for Love You To, for example ...

Anyway, I think there were more than two songs on which George played the sitar ...

George did not play on Within You, Without You. If he did, it was not included in the final mix.

But sadly he's wrong on some other things too  :-/

Taxman (2:39)
Recorded: April 20, 1966 at Abbey Road, London, England but remade April 21, 1966 with overdubbing on April 22, 1966 and May 16, 1966
John Lennon - tambourine, background vocal
Paul McCartney - bass guitar, background vocal, guitar solo
George Harrison - double-tracked lead vocal, lead guitar  ::)
Ringo Starr - drums

... and for example, talking about The Inner Light precisealley (still wrong):
