Rory At The Movies.
« on: September 26, 2010, 05:46:02 PM »

Does anyone know anything about the projected movie 'Rory Storm & the Hurricanes', produced by G-Machine in Los Angeles and directed by Scott Brion. The writers Paul Guay and Ron Gell obviously never met Rory and I wonder where they got their information from. I was approached over a decade ago by two Los Angeles film makers who wanted to make a film about Rory, but they told me they couldn't get anyone interested because of the tragic ending. I tried to contact G-Machine about it but received no reply. My own story of Rory is now on: http://www.sixtiescity.com/Mbeat/mbfilms98.htm

I'm registered for IMDB Pro, but it only gives details of the film company, producer, director and writers. No other information is present. I did e-mail the company but never received a reply. I have concerns about this production.

I have a feeling that sometimes Hollywood exploits real stories, sacrificing the truth for exploitation. This is what worries me about the Rory Storm & the Hurricanes projected film. Who are these people and why have they decided to make a film about Rory and where did they get their information?
The director is Bronwen Hughes whose previous films include Woman On Top, Harriet the Spy and Amy Grant: Building The House of Love. Scott Brion, the other director, was music supervisor for Pee Stains and Other Disasters. The writer Ron Gell scripted Pee Stains and Other Disasters and Countess Dracula's Orgy of Blood and the producer Cynthia Marquoit was responsible for the TV short Yes, Virgin.

I just sent Bronwen (and Ron and Paul) a message to contact you, Bill.

I found them on Facebook. I hope she responds. Her track record seems pretty good. White Collar and Breaking Bad are decent TV series.

I hope she gets into Iris' and George's relationship, which led to his friendship with Ringo. You mentioned that Paul (on Wingspan) said it was George who lobbied for Pete's ouster.

This could be a great film if done right.

Knowing Rory so well, his character, his showmanship, his sense of humour, his idiosyncracies, together with the background of Stormsville, the Liverpool area he came from, his clubs like the Masque, the individual members of the band and their personalities - I just can't see how an American company who are completely unaware of any of this can actually go ahead and produce a film which would have any resemblance to the real Rory Storm & the Hurricanes.

An American guy made A Hard Day's Night.

All it takes is a bit of passion and research.

This is a different kettle of fish. 'A Hard Day's Night' was entirely scripted by Alun Owen. Alun, a Liverpool/Welshman was a friend of ours, wrote plays about Liverpool, including 'No Trams To Lime Street', studied the Liverpool character and also travelled with the Beatles  on a couple of occasions to capture their way of speech and character. If there was smeone like that to script it, such as Willie Russell, Alan Bleasdale, Jimmy McGovern or Neville Smith, then I would be content and the producter and director wouldn't concern me. I've got a bad feeling about this production.
