 :-/ No matter how many times I listen to it, I can't figure out what the song's about! None of it makes any sense to me! If any of yall know what the song's talking about, please reply!

Don't forget John got in to trouble with Chuck Berry (and his publishing company) because he 'lifted' a lot of the words off one of his songs to make Come Together.......can't recall the name at the moment.

"Here come a flat-top, he was movin' up with me" (from You Can't Catch Me)
"Here come old flattop, he come grooving up slowly" (Come Together, first line)


... and about the meaning of the lyrics: I've read a theory (based on the Paul Is Dead hoax) that each line (more than each verse) is a reference to each of them, John included:

Thank you for the lyrics, Raxo! Good grief. That's a stretch, in my opinion. I think most of these suits against the Beatles are really called, "Sue them if you find any resemblance at all, because they have lots of money." Poor John. I believe him when he called it a tribute. It certainly doesn't sound like a ripoff to me.

Tara, I'm not sure the song has any real meaning. It sounds like John is playing with words again, because he loved that. "Hold you in his armchair" -- that's very silly, kind of a play on "hold you in his arms". Does anyone know if John had anyone in mind when he wrote this? Cheers.

I read or heard (somewhere) that it was meant to be a song for some MP. the MP's campaign was Come Together. So John began this song for the campaign but then he decided not to do and he just wrote... not really meaningful words... because he was depressed. But dont quote me on that coz it might not be right.

The song's history began with Lennon writing a song for Timothy Leary's failed gubernatorial campaign in California against Ronald Reagan, one which promptly ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana. It was transformed by Lennon into a track with digs at McCartney and Harrison interspersed alongside tales of his Bagism movement with wife Yoko Ono.

Theres an interesting theory that each verse is about one of the Beatles. Bit far fetched perhaps

It's just interesting- anyone can submit their ideas about what songs are about- and it has millions of artists and bands on there. But then I've never been one for reading toooooo far into lyrics.

I reckon 'come together' is just one of Lennon's senseless pieces of poetic genius  :) Like 'I am the Walrus' really. But I think it just has influences from whatever was on his mind at the time. Like 'He got Ono sideboard' -probably a reference to the Yoko!

I love the lyric 'he shoot coca-cola - great play on words

Anyway I'm rambling now as usual  ::) :)

I think John loved using wordplay in his songs.
Not everything he wrote was serious & had a deep meaning.

Not as far as you might think. I have read some interesting theories about this theory lately  ;D
Of course this could all be John's intention: let those little f***ers figure out the meaning of nonsense. But then, he has given us a nice thing to do.
Some speculative clues:

Holy roller, joojoo eyeball ---> reference to George
Shoots Coca Cola (coke), Monkey finger ---> Paul
