I've never seen a real bat

No?! If you sit out at dusk and later you can see them swoop past eating bugs and stuff! Most of the fear of bats is all stuff! They are a bit creepy though. They do have these jerky movements when they walk and bring strange, dark things to your imagination but they're really gentle little guys. If we didn't have them we would be consumed by the bugs!
Here in the Northeast most of the bats migrate to Vermont where they hibernate in the cave system. There is a disease called "white nose disease" that looks like a white fungus on there noses and is fatal. Because they all hibernate to the same caves it is spreading fast and killing off large numbers of bats. I just keep my eye out when I catch one to make sure. No fungus here yet!

I wonder if that's what is happening here. We've been in this house since 1986 and at first there were just tons of bats. I learned not to be out at dusk! Now I hardly see any. I've often wondered if it has anything to do with the aerial mosquito spraying that's been done.

It's a pity what happened to Bela Lugosi at the end.  Ed Wood found him destitute in the mid-50s and shot some footage of him which wound up, kind of non sequitur, in his film "masterpiece" Plan 9 from Outer Space...
